ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥  ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥

Let us please become focused at the forehead.

Dhaarnaa:

ਭੈਣੇ ਨੀ ਅੱਜ, ਧਰਤ ਵੀ ਨੱਚੇ ਨੱਚੇ

Bhainay nee aj, Dharat vee nachay nachay

Oh. my sister friends it feels like the earth is dancing as it has received the pious dust of your feet.

ਭੈਣੇ ਨੀ ਅੱਜ, ਪੌਣ ਵੀ ਹੱਸੇ ਹੱਸੇ

Bhainay nee aj, poun vee hasay hasay

And the air is laughing that by becoming the breath, it is going to have the blessed sight of your inside, the inside that is filled with ishq!

   

ਭੈਣੇ ਨੀ ਸਭ, ਬੈਠੇ ਕੀਹਦੀ ਰਜ਼ਾ

Bhainay nee sabh, baithay keedee razaa

And whose will was it that we, from different parts of the world get together at this place at this hour!

ਭੈਣੇ ਨੀ ਕਿਨ ਕੀਲੀ ਇਹ ਫਿਜ਼ਾ

Bhainay nee kin, keelee eih fizaa

Oh, my sister friends, who is controlling this mysterious, enticing atmosphere!

ਭੈਣੇ ਨੀ ਇਹ, ਕੌਣ ਜੋ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਗਾ

Bhainay nee eih, koun jo rahee-aaN gaa

ਇਹ ਘਰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਦੇ ਬੈਠੀਆਂ, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਜੂਨ ਹੰਢਾ

Eih ghar ishq day baithee-aaN man dee joon handaa

These are those blessed souls who are sitting in the house of true love, ishq, and they have lived the life of the mind and moved on.

Please close your eyes and feel the Divine and fully get absorbed in that feeling.

ਇਹ ਘਰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਦੇ ਬੈਠੀਆਂ, ਮਨ ਦੀ ਜੂਨ ਹੰਢਾ

Eih ghar ishq day baithee-aaN man dee joon handaa

As long as we are in thoughts, we are the mind and our consciousness wanders here and there. Coming and going of thoughts is the sign that we must remain in the cycle of birth and death.  

ਇਹ ਦੇਸ ਨੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਦਾ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਭਟਕਣ ਮੁੱਕੀ ਆ

Eih days nee mayray laal daa, jithay bhatkan mukdee aa

This is the space of my precious Beloved where the mind’s wandering ceases.

The rare ones hear His utterances. When we fully wake up, we will be amazed what an ocean of treasures Gurbani is. To dive deep into one line of Japji Sahib may take lifetimes if one has the time. Japji Sahib explains how this creation came about. God first created something like fog for billions and trillions of years. Scientists are not above God; a scientist is one to whom God reveals some secrets of how His creation works. In the 1800’s, scientists discovered that water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen. 500 years ago, Maharaj Ji revealed that first God created gasses and from the gasses came water.

ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ

saachay tay pavnaa bha-i-aa pavnai tay jal ho-ay.

Recently, pictures from the James Webb Telescope were released. 10 billion dollars were spent in the making of this telescope. Earlier, scientists thought that there is dark matter beyond these planets and galaxies. With this new telescope, God has revealed images of suns, moons, stars beyond the darkness. They are amazing and so colorful! Scientists of the world gathered and there were Sikhs as well. The Sikhs said, we already knew this! And they asked, how did you know about this ? Because Guru Granth Sahib says it - lakh aagaasaaN aagaas.

Let us please focus. God has brought us to a very critical point, at a very narrow bridge, which requires one’s consciousness to be more subtle. Kabir Sahib says:

ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਖਾਂਡੁ ਰੇਤੁ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਖਰੀ ਹਾਥੀ ਚੁਨੀ ਜਾਇ

ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਲੀ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਕੀਟੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਖਾਇ

har hai khaaNd rayt meh bikhree haathee chunee na jaa-ay.

kahi kabeer gur bhalee bujhaa-ee keetee ho-ay kai khaa-ay

The Divine is like sugar crystals scattered in the sand. The big elephant (ego) cannot pick it up; one has to become small like an ant to feed on it. In other words, a fine humble consciousness is essential to feel the Divine.

In His first appearance, Maharaj Ji says:

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ

man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.

Oh, my mind, how can you get out of this cycle of birth and death without ishq ?

These are His utterances; it feels good to sing, we feel the love, but this is barely getting our foot off the ground. Please understand this.

Dhaarnaa:

ਕੰਨ ਕਰੀਂ ਲਾਲ ਵੇ, ਸਮੇਂ ਆਏ ਨੇ ਫਕੀਰ

Kan karee laal vay samay aa-ay nay fakir.

Fakir is the one who recognizes the fact that outside of this body, there is absolutely nothing which I can call mine, or which can become mine.

When Maharaj Ji says, oh, my mind, how can you get out of this cycle of birth and death without ishq ? Who is He addressing ? We will say Maharaj Ji is addressing our minds but that is not entirely true. Please understand this. If our name is Rustam Singh, then Maharaj Ji is addressing Rustam Singh. We misunderstand that my mind is something else and I am separate from it. That is the ultimate reality but at this point we are the mind!

Maharaj Ji says:

ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੋ ਗਾਵੈ

hai ko-ee raam pi-aaro gaavai.

How beautiful! Maharaj Ji is saying, is there anyone who sings His praises ? All of us sing so why is Maharaj Ji saying this to us ? He is saying, is there anyone who sings His praises, forgetting the egoistic I, forgetting that he is Rustam Singh. At this time, who we are is influenced significantly by our name! If there was a way that all our names could be taken away and nobody had names, we would probably panic. What will we call somebody ? Nothing would happen! Life would come to a standstill. Name is important to survive in the world, otherwise how would we call each other, open accounts, etc. The name is needed to carry out the worldly affairs necessary for the functioning of life. These names have no meaning beyond that but we get so attached to them - Rustam Singh has so many houses, Rustam Singh has so much land, Rustam Singh has so many stores, Rustam Singh is the MP! Please understand this! Whosoever is ready to understand that I am not this name, I am something else - can we do this ? Chances are we will remain awake to this while we are here in the diwan. As soon as we go outside, someone will say, congratulations you bought a new house and that will make us happy, and we will fall asleep again! I know this is very difficult and that is why I keep saying this again and again. The game is very subtle now, and we are not only going to play it, but also win it!

There are so many houses in this city. If we remove the names of all the houses (the numbers, the addresses), how will we know whose house is this! The numbers of the houses are their names; names are important to function in the world. Similarly, we don’t really have a name; it is just like a number for a house. Those houses are made of bricks and this body is also a house, for which Maharaj Ji says:

ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਏਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਹੈ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਰਤਨਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ

har mandar ayhu sareer hai gi-aan ratan pargat ho-ay.

Hari mandir means the temple of God. This is not Rustam Singh, it is a temple of God. These are all temples and the temples have numbers. Our names are the numbers assigned to these temples. So, the names are necessary to function in the world and make it convenient to communicate and carry out transactions. We are a temple of God and our name is just a number assigned to the temple. Please reflect on this - does the number have anything to do with the house ? Does the building really depend on the number ? We are misunderstanding that the number is the house; that this is Rustam Singh! This is very subtle. Rustam Singh is just the number of this temple; it could have been any other number but the temple would have been the same! Please look at this carefully; I mentioned this in Fresno as well. The most pleasing word to us is our name. If we hear our name while we are talking to somebody else, our attention will be pulled in that direction.

The story is very subtle; we are at a critical juncture now. Just today, I met with some sangat and asked them if they come to sangat everyday and they said, not every day, sometimes, or on weekends. We have to dwell in the sangat if we want to reach somewhere.

ਜਾਇ ਬਸਹੁ ਵਡਭਾਗਣੀ ਸਖੀਏ ਸੰਤਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ

jaa-ay bashu vadbhaagnee sakhee-ay santaa sang samaa-ee-ai.

Maharaj Ji says remain in the sangat if you want to win the game of life. But if you are just coming to hang out, you are still welcome, but… The mind has deep deep layers. Let’s renounce this egoistic I, forget it and go to another world. We are not going to leave everything and go to the woods; we are to empty your consciousness that these things, these people are not mine.

Dhaarnaa:

ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਊਣਾ, ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ

vay mainu, tere baajhoN jyoona, gunaah lagi-aa

Because of COVID, the holy congregation was taken away from us. While there was a significant loss, there was some benefit as well; we realized the value of sangat.

ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾ ਵੇ ਗਲ ਕੀਤੀ, ਇਸ਼ਕ ਹਕੀਕੀ ਦੀ

kisay naa vay gal keetee, ishq hakeekee dee

Hakeekat means truth, ishq with the truth. Nobody talked about having ishq with the truth.

ਨਾ ਹੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਡੌਂਡੀ ਪਿੱਟੀ, ਆਸ਼ਕੀ ਮਸ਼ੂਕੀ ਦੀ

Naa hee kisay doundee pitee, aashkee mashookee dee

And nobody talked publicly about that our soul does ishq with God, and that we are the souls and not this name.

Maharaj Ji says:

ਆਸਕੁ ਏਹੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿ ਲੇਖੈ ਵਰਤੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

aasak ayhu na aakhee-ai je laykhai vartai so-ay. ||1||

He says if you are counting how many hours you sat in meditation, that is not ishq.

ਗੱਲਾਂ ਹੌਲੀਆਂ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਵੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਗਲੀ ਲੰਘਿਆ

gallaN houlee-aaN see, jo vee sadee galee langhi-aa

All they talked about was worldly matters; their words did not have any weight!

We have connected ourselves to our name; we have connected our condition, our existence to our name. It’s just a name! There are millions of names, and we could have been called by any name but that would not have any impact on our being! Please remember, in the first pauri of Japji Sahib, what is the first question ? What is the first question Maharaj Ji asks in Guru Granth Sahib ?

ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.

How can I know who I am ? When you find out who you are, you will find out that God is you (not, you are God, but God is you). There was a fakir named Mansur in Iran and we have heard his story. He would say, An Al Haq (I am God). The emperor gave orders that he be stoned to death in the middle of the street. To this day, everyone says that Mansur was right and he was wrongfully killed. He was right but the words he used were wrong. Maharaj Ji says:

ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਤੂੰ ਹੈ

so parabh door naahee parabh tooN hai.

Mansur said I am God. Maharaj Ji says, you are not God, God is you! There is no I or you here; God has become you, God has become this body and everything else. See how different this is from what Mansur said. This is very deep!

Dhaarnaa:

ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਰੱਬ ਆ ਬਣਦਾ, ਰੱਬ ਤੇ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਰੱਬ, ਵੇ ਸਜਣਾ ਮੇਰਿਆ

hor ko-ee naa rab aa bandaa, rab tay rehndaa rab, vay sajnaa meri-aa 

Maharaj Ji did not say, you are God. He said, God is you.

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ

man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.

Our true self is nothing but ishq, and does ishq with God and His creation. His creation is nothing else, God has taken all these forms Himself. All of us sitting here, God has taken all these forms. But, these different forms do not exist in reality. Rustam Singh does not exist; the world made him believe that your name is Rustam Singh, this is your family, those are strangers, and so on, when in reality it was God. The story went in the wrong direction, it was explained incorrectly. God calls us back; He says I am going to give you a new birth, from within Me this time. Earlier you were born out of your mother and father and the story went awry. Now I am going to give you birth from within Myself and you will know who you are. But why didn’t You give me birth to begin with ?  That could not happen because you had unfulfilled desires from previous lifetimes and out of love I brought you back to fulfill those because you asked for it. Now the glance of mercy fell upon you and I made you understand you are not. Rustam Singh does not exist then how can there be any land that belongs to Rustam Singh! None of us has a separate existence, God has taken all these forms, but in ego we are believing that I am, and I am special! Even a beggar feels he is special for some reason. He may think I am special because I can convince people to give me more money than other beggars. Everybody in the whole world is in the race of becoming special and that is moving us farther and farther away from God. Let’s look at ourselves honestly - we want to become special, so people know about me. My kids should have all these things so people know about them.

Are you ready to give up those things ?

These buildings are not yours - do you agree ?

We agree but God has given them for us to use.

God has given them for you to use, okay. Do you need so much ? God only gives what we need. It is evening, He will provide us with food that we need. Whatever we need is provided by Him. Then, why are you collecting all these things ? This is ego!

Here in sangat, the ego weakens a little bit but what is our state of consciousness when we go to bed tonight, or tomorrow afternoon. Has there been any transformation ? Has there been the slightest realization that I have been robbed! This is God! This is not me!

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ

man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਬਖਸੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ

gurmukh antar rav rahi-aa bakhsay bhagat bhandaar. ||

Gurmukh means the true self. Maharaj Ji says that ishq is within the one who has realized one’s true self, the soul. You are the soul, and your soul is full of ishq! You are not the mind, you are not Rustam Singh. The soul cannot be named. You are the soul. And how did they become the true self ? God bestowed upon them the treasure of loads of devotion and meditation. They meditated a lot with love, realized their true self, and became ishq.

It is of utmost importance that in order to move forward, we make notes every day. When we write ourselves, these things will settle in our consciousness. Review your notes every week, and on some Sunday, review your notes from the last month. This will help cement these things in our consciousness.

Your body is the house for your true self. Outside the house, there is a number, an address - Rustam Singh. Rustam Singh is just a number; it is your true self’s house and the true self cannot be named. Maharaj Ji has called it nij ghar, gurmukh, the fourth state, aatam cheen.

Dhaarnaa:

ਤੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ, ਨਿੱਜ ਦੀਆਂ, ਅੱਜ ਚੱਲੀਆਂ ਵੇ

tay galaaN nij dee-aaN aj chali-aaN vay

Today they started talking about the true self.

ਬੜਾ ਔਖਾ ਖਿਆਲਾਂ ਤੋ ਪਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਣਾ

barhaa a-ou-khaa khayaalaaN to paraaN jaanaa

It is difficult to go beyond the thoughts.

ਜੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਉਹ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸਵੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ

jo ga-ee-aaN o ho-ee-aaN savanee-aaN vay

Those who did, became so beautiful and colorful.  

 

ਗੀਤ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਉਹ ਉਚਿਆਂ ਅੰਬਰਾਂ ਦਾ

geet bani-aaN o uchi-aaN ambraaN daa

They became songs of the divinely skies.

 

ਤੇ ਵਾਸੀ ਨਿਮਰ ਮਹਲ ਕਹੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ

tay vaasee nimar mahal kahani-aaN vay

And came to be known as the residents of the mansion of humility and love. Our true self is filled with humility and love.

ਪਰਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਤੋਂ ਸਿੱਧੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ

paraaN man to siDhay nahee jaa sakday

It is not possible to go beyond the mind directly.

ਤੇ ਗਲੀ ਸੁਣਨ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਵੜੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ

tay galee sunan dee oh varhani-aaN vay

Those who went beyond the mind, first entered the street of hearing.  

After 25-26 years, I started talking about suni-ai, hearing, because it took us so long. Things that have been in our consciousness for lifetimes upon lifetimes, moving those aside and hearing something new is very difficult. When we hear Khajana Darshan multiple times, we will hear more. The mind will make us believe that you have heard everything.  

ਉੱਥੇ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਨੇ, ਪਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ

othay ishq nay, pataa nahee kee keetaa   

ਘਰ ਆਪਣੇ, ਫੜ ਬਹੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ

ghar aapney, farh bahanni-aaN vay

Those who became the true self, their consciousness is integrated, it is one. If the consciousness is hearing, then who is going to open the eyes! If one is having thoughts at the same time, can we be hearing ? No!

Please hear your own voice. Way in the beginning, in Japji Sahib, Maharaj Ji said:

ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ

gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o.

But we haven’t done that fully. We do not go to the depth of these utterances. The mind wants to keep jumping to the next thing. Please hear your voice as you are singing with love.

othay ishq nay pataa nahee kee keetaa   

ghar aapney farh bahanni-aaN vay
