ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Maharaj Ji has shown us that the purpose of life is to recognize that I am a soul, and the first step in the process is to sing and hear. Initially, some of our consciousness is involved in singing and some in hearing. The next step is to just hear, and hearing is very difficult because our mind is used to either agreeing with what someone said, or doubt it and have questions about it. The mind always doubts; these questions and doubts are in the way, and are the reason that one cannot hear. Hearing requires a lot of power; the power that gets scattered in thinking, understanding, doubting, needs to be integrated, focused, and relaxed in order to hear - it is very difficult. The treasures that Maharaj Ji shows are seen after we start hearing.
pee-oo daaday kaa khol dithaa khajaanaa.
The divine presence in the Satguru is only seen after one starts hearing. Until that time the consciousness is full of questions, doubts.
When we learn how to hear, look at the treasures that are revealed - that God is vibrating at a different speed in various parts of His creation, and all those vibrations are present in the human consciousness. It is with great fortune that one becomes stunned, the consciousness is stunned upon hearing this truth.
ਜੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੇ ਸੋਈ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਜੋ ਖੋਜੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jo barahmanday so-ee pinday jo khojai so paavai.
Now we need a subtle consciousness to go deeper. We can only understand these things if we hear them. The vibrations in the entire universe are within this body and they are operating at all times within us - how amazing! Countless are those vibrations but we can’t even hear them!
ਵਡੇ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣਾ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
vaday kee-aa vadi-aa-ee-aa kichh kahnaa kahan na jaa-ay.
Maharaj Ji says I wanted to say something but I cannot say it.
Maharaj Ji reveals to us that the purpose of human life is to recognize that I am a soul, and that can only be realized after shedding this false I and taking another birth.
ਕਰਮੀ ਆਵੈ ਕਪੜਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
karmee aavai kaprhaa nadree mokh du-aar.
We take off this clothing and then He covers us with a new cloth, covers our soul with Himself. The process of rebirth cannot begin until we become fully capable of hearing; hearing not only what is being said, but also what is not being said; not only hear the words but see the picture behind those words.
Couple days ago there was a picture in the newspaper about a conference of scientists who met every year to talk about new discoveries. The picture was from 1927 in Germany and the caption said that the scientists met to talk about their discoveries but the opposite of what they discovered is also true! They were all confused! Let’s say one scientist claims that the sun disappears into the darkness, and another one says the sun emerges from darkness. Both are correct but contradict each other. Science is nothing but some of the secrets that God showed to man about His creation. It’s His play, man is just like a kid playing with pebbles at the beach.
When we begin to hear, the process of rebirth starts through hearing the Anhad Shabad. When a particular frequency of vibration is created, the same frequency responds from within us. Please understand this, it is very precious. Whatever the sound is on the outside, whether it is the sound of an animal or a bird or anything else, it is within us. We know there are many people whose profession is to make these sounds, and they are able to do this because all these sounds are within us. These things are beyond our understanding. When one frequency of sound is produced on the outside and the same frequency of sound responds from within us, both vibrations attract each other. Because they attract each other, that is why they become one. During Keertan, a frequency of sound is produced by the harmonium. Then, the same frequency responds from within us automatically. These vibrations attract each other and the sound from the harmonium becomes one with the sound of the singer. This sound that becomes one, affects our consciousness significantly, and we must have the art of hearing for this sound to make that impact, to hit us and transform us. We can see now why Maharaj Ji stressed so much upon hearing (suni-ai).
Let us please hear the sound of the harmonium and that of the singer at the same time and let that sound hit our hirdaa (heart area).
ਨੈਣ ਮਹਿੰਜੇ ਤਰਸਦੇ ਕਦਿ ਪਸੀ ਦੀਦਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
nain mahinjay tarasday kad pasee deedaar.
Please recognize that this hymn is a pain filled hymn, feeling the pain of separation, and see how the instrument is crying. The harmonium isn’t worried about who is hearing me, who is watching me so see how it is crying. The singer should match the sound of the harmonium and not the other way around.
Did we create this rhythm or did it just emerge from within us ? It just emerged because all vibrations are already within us. What was this sound that emerged from the harmonium ? It was the same sound, the same vibrations that God has put in some part of His creation.
Maharaj Ji says:
ਰਾਗ ਰਤਨ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਪਰੀਆ ਸਬਦ ਗਾਵਣ ਆਈਆ ॥
raag ratan parvaar paree-aa sabad gaavan aa-ee-aa.
When we sing the Shabad, the harmonium sings the Shabad with us, in the raag (arrangement of musical notes in a specific order). First the raag is played on the harmonium and then we sing. Ratan means precious, parvaar means family. Raag ratan parvaar - that these raag’s are precious and it is a family of raag’s. Why family ? Because he has put countless vibrations in the universe. Paree-aa means that their sound is very tender. The vibrations of the divine make the sound from the harmonium, and the same vibrations are within us.
ayko hai bhaa-ee ayko hai.
We should break all relations with this egoistic I, that I cannot get along with this false I, and that is true. We may be laughing on the outside but something within us is sad - it knows this laughter is not authentic. We must become very discontent with this I and long for the transformation.
Dhaarnaa:
ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ, ਐਸ ਮੈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲੇ
ha-ay nee mayraa jee nahee lagdaa ais maiN day naalay
Once we learn to hear, we will all sing the same way. If we are not able to sing in harmony with everyone that means we have not reached that stage. Please hear very intently and the singing will emerge from within. The day we realize the secret - that my consciousness has been hijacked by the attachments - to people, places, things, thoughts, they become shackles for me. Those attachments keep occupying the consciousness and don’t let us hear or sing.
ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਇਥੇ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ ਖਿੜਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਵੀ ਗਲੀਏ ਜਾਵਾਂ
haa-ay nee aithay moh hai khirhi-aa, jis vee galee-ay jaavaaN
Wherever I go, I see attachments surrounding me.
ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੋਲ ਬੁਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਕਰ ਕਰ ਲੰਮੀਆਂ ਬਾਹਵਾਂ
haa-ay nee saanoo kol bulaa-ouNdaa kar kar lamee-aaN baaHvaaN
Those attachments keep calling me, putting their arms around me.
ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਨਾ ਖੁਸ਼ਬੂ ਪੱਲੇ, ਮੈਂ ਕੀਕਣ ਹੱਥ ਫੜਾਵਾਂ
haa-ay nee naa khushboo palay, main keekan hath farhaavaaN
The attachment has nothing deep, pure, mysterious in it. How can I give my hand to the attachments! Attachment does not contain the fragrance of truth. The Divine is fragrance and we become that fragrance. This body is like a tree and the fragrance in the flowers is God.
ਅਸਾਂ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਾ ਕੋਲ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੇ, ਜੋ ਭਰੀ ਸੁਗੰਧੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੇ
asaaN tay jaanaa kol nij day, jo bharee suganDhee-aaN naalay
I am to go to my real self, the soul, who is filled with the fragrance of the Divine. That fragrance has its aura, its presence.
Let us please become fully available to the Celestial Music. Maharaj Ji says:
ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨਿ ਕੀਆ ॥੧॥
tis roop na raykh anaahad vaajai sabad niranjan kee-aa.
In another Shabad Maharaj Ji says:
ਅਲਾਹ ਪਾਕੰ ਪਾਕ ਹੈ ਸਕ ਕਰਉ ਜੇ ਦੂਸਰ ਹੋਇ ॥
alaah paakaN paak hai sak kara-o jay doosar ho-ay.
Niranjan means pure. Maharaj Ji says that the so pure beautiful Divine who is formless, is singing in the form of Celestial Music. In other words, He Himself has taken the form of the sound of Celestial Music.
karay vakhi-aan jaanai jay ko-ee.
Maharaj Ji says, only a person who has fully known the Celestial Music, would know what truly it is! It takes a long time to know it. We should practice staying focused in the middle of the head while the Celestial Music is playing all around us. Keep reciting Moolmantar in your consciousness while you do this. Eventually only the sound of the Celestial Music will remain.. Then go beyond the sound of the Celestial Music, to the other side.
Whoever gets to know it fully, realizes that this is the Divine Himself. To hear the Celestial Music is to drink God, and by drinking God our consciousness becomes content. No thirst or hunger is left behind.
Dhaarnaa:
ਅੱਧੀ ਰਾਤੀ ਖਾਬਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਆਣ ਕੇ ਜਗਾਵੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ, ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
aDhee raatee khaabaaN vich, aankay jagaavay jirhaa, samajh naa aavay mainoo kaun nee
ਕੋਈ ਨਈਓ ਜਾਗਦਾ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਦਿੱਸਦਾ ਨੀ, ਬਿਨਾ ਸਾਜਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵਜਾਵੇ ਨਾਦ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
koi naee-o jaagdaa tay naa ko-ee disdaa nee, binaa saajaaN to vajaavay naad kaun nee
Nobody is awake, the whole world is asleep, so who is playing this symphony without any instruments ?
We should sit in a corner of a room in the house somewhere and hear the Celestial Music. This mind is silly. If it has a lot of space, it tends to run around. The smaller the space, easier it is to control the mind.
ਅੱਧੀ ਰਾਤੀ ਖਾਬਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਆਣ ਕੇ ਜਗਾਵੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ, ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
aDhee raatee khaabaaN vich, aankay jagaavay jirhaa, samajh naa aavay mainoo kaun nee
We should now keep checking on our internal state and see how we are feeling. Then, if we read, satgur aagai ardaas kar (offer gratitude to the satguru) we won’t just read it like that. It will be with a realization that Maharaj Ji gave me the hukam that satgur aagai ardaas kar. Then we learn how to obey His hukam. Maharaj Ji said in the first Pauri of Japji sahib:
ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal.
Then we will see how every utterance of His is hukam. Maharaj Ji says that as we remain in the womb of the Guru, we start realizing that the same God is dwelling within everyone and because the same God is dwelling in everyone, every body is a holy place. Please hear this by becoming the consciousness only, and lose any sense of the body.
ਸਭ ਨਗਰੀ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਸਭੇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਹਹਿ ਥਾਵਾ ॥੧॥
sabh nagree meh ayko raajaa sabhay pavit heh thaavaa. ||1||
ਜਹ ਬੈਸਾਲਹਿ ਤਹ ਬੈਸਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜਹ ਭੇਜਹਿ ਤਹ ਜਾਵਾ ॥
jah baisaaleh tah baisaa su-aamee jah bhayjeh tah jaavaa.
Once we know the truth that every body is the holy temple of God, then we would start understanding His hukam, His will.
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਤਿਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਹੋਵਣਾ ॥
ji-o ji-o tayraa hukam tivai ti-o hovnaa.
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਰਖਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਤਹ ਜਾਇ ਖੜੋਵਣਾ ॥
jah jah rakheh aap tah jaa-ay kharhovanaa.
Previously I noticed that the outside world was not in my hands but I was trying to control it. But now it is clear to me that everything outside is happening as He wills. If you say, stay here, then that’s what I do. If you say, go somewhere, then I do that. I don’t do anything on my own so there is nothing to worry about.
With His grace, our insides are becoming silent. This is heaven. Heaven is not a physical space somewhere, it is a state of our consciousness. Vaday Baba Ji used to say: God is bringing satjug (the age of truth).
Dhaarnaa:
ਤੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਜ ਚੱਲੀਆਂ ਵੇ
tay galaaN nij dee-aaN aj chalee-aaN vay
ਕਾਹਦਾ ਮਾਨ ਤੇ ਕਾਹਦਾ ਤਾਨ ਚੰਨਾ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਆਖਦਾ ਬਹਿ ਖੜੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ
kaaHdaa maan tay kaaHdaa taan chanaa, jithay aakhdaa baih kharhanee-aaN vay
Oh my dear friend, there is nothing I can be proud of, there is nothing which I feel is my power, wherever He asks me to sit, I sit there, wherever He asks me to go, I go there, wherever He asks me to stand I stand there.
Please lose yourself in the singing.
