In 1866, a family of four - brother, sister, mother and father immigrated from Ireland to Boston, Massachusetts. The elder sister was eight years old and the younger brother was four. They lost their parents and were admitted to Alms School; a school that was run entirely on donations; it wasn’t a very good school. In a few months, the brother also passed away. The girl got infected with an eye disease due to which she lost her eyesight, hearing, and the ability to speak. This girl was then moved to Watertown, Massachusetts, to a school for the mentally disabled students because her behavior had become very unstable, like animals. At the age of fifteen, an operation restored a minor amount of her vision. At the age of twenty, she moved to Alabama to a school of the blind. She was known as Little Anne. Because of her behavior, she was kept in a different room; that she was a hopeless case and nothing could be done. But there was a nurse with a tender heart who brought a brownie one day and kept it in front of Little Anne’s cage. Anne did not give any response so the nurse walked away. The next day, she came but the brownie was not there which meant Anne had eaten it. Every day the nurse would bring a brownie and try to talk to Anne but she remained like a rock and never responded. The nurse did not give up. One day, when the nurse came, Anne was standing close to the wired wall of her cage, and she smiled at the nurse. The nurse gave her a lot of affection and caressed her; she could only touch her fingers because Anne was behind the wired fence of her cage. Gradually, the deep, unconditional, true love offered by the nurse won over Anne, and she recovered; the nurse’s love cured her! Anne was 22 years old at the time. Around the same time, Helen Keller was brought to this school. The school personnel told Anne that she could go home now but Anne chose to stay there. She wanted to help Helen Keller who could not speak, hear, or see anything. Working with Helen tirelessly for years and years, Anne taught Helen one thing: that everything in this world has a name. After many years of hard work, she familiarized Anne with A,B,C’s using raised letters. She would have Helen rub her hand on the top of a baby’s head and then have her touch the letters B,A,B,Y so she could understand that this is known as a baby. It took 30 years to bring Helen to the stage where she started understanding everything, and then she wrote: I am not blind. The world is blind. A statement like this coming from a girl who could not see or hear - it is a long story! Then, Anne hired a lady named Poly who started living with them. They toured the whole world and motivated people who were blind, mute, or deaf; showed them how they had nothing but were able to understand everything. Helen invented sign language, wrote books in braille that could be read by blind people. Anne Sullival was Helen’s teacher. When she was 39 years old, a professor from Harvard married her seeing that she was such a brave soul. The whole world knows about these brave souls. Millions of people were filled with hope after seeing them. We can see that those people from whom life had taken away everything, became a source of learning for others to whom life had given everything. I was telling the story of Anne Sullivan, who herself arised from deep darkness, and then became the teacher of Helen Keller. Helen Keller, who was mute, deaf and blind. Anne Sullivan’s patience and love taught Helen, who raised to great heights and showed the world that any obstacle can be overcome. Our obstacles, our problems are so tiny compared to those brave souls. We should please remain so grateful towards Maharaj Ji, towards other people, for what we have because the very nature of the Divine is to be grateful. This is very strange! He says:

ha-o tis dhaadhee kurbaan je tayraa sayvdaar.

God is saying that I’m a sacrifice to those who are serving My creation.

ha-o tis dhaadhee balihaar je gaavai gun apaar.

I’m a sacrifice to them who sing the glories of God, because through that act, they are exhibiting the nature of God.

To be thankful is to be of God’s nature.

so dhaadhee Dhan Dhan jis lorhay nirankaar.

Maharaj Ji says God needs those who serve His creation; He says that you are so blessed, and so precious.

Blessed are those, whom God says I need you. Please see God’s nature. If we need something from someone, we don’t openly say that I need your help because our ego wants to keep its head up. And He is God - He says I’m a sacrifice to you.

so dhaadhee bhaagath jis sachaa du-aar baar.

Maharaj Ji says the one who remains in a state of gratefulness by singing God’s glories; God shows him the door to the truth.

Please remain focused at the hirdaa (heart area). This is one of the doors to His court.

so dhaadhee bhaagath jis sachaa du-aar baar.

In the last line of this Paurhee, Maharaj Ji says:

so dhaadhee gunvant jis no parabh pi-aar.

He says, only the one who has ishq with me can be grateful. It’s so deep! He says those who are in ishq with me, they are blessed with godly virtues. We must understand this. What does this mean? Maharaj Ji says: one who does ishq with Me, his nature becomes like Me, and My nature is to be grateful. Is this clear? We will revisit this.

Please stay there.

gur sar saagar bohitho gur teerath daree-aa-o.

jay tis bhaavai oojlee sat sar naavan jaa-o.

Maharaj Ji says that Guru is like a river within, which has seven holy shrines, seven holy tanks. If the Guru becomes pleased with someone, He calls that person within, and makes that person take bath in all those seven holy tanks, and thus that person’s consciousness is purified and becomes radiant.

asmaan mi-yaanay lahang daree-aa gusal kardan bood.

Then the question: Oh, my Beloved, where does that river flow; the river called Guru? He says that the river flows upwards towards the skies, and that it is there for you to take a bath in. There are 7 holy tanks, one at the root point, second at the pubic bone, third at the navel point, fourth at the hirdaa, fifth at the throat, sixth in between the eyebrows, seventh on top of head.

jay tis bhaavai oojlee sat sar naavan jaa-o.

This thing we keep calling “I”, what is it? It is something completely different.

Dhaarnaa: (at 37:28)

maiN nahee kujh …..hor hai ih…..dohaaN toN ……anjaan vay maahee-aa

From previous deewaan: Whom I have been calling “me”, now you are showing me that this is not “me”, it’s something else. Now, neither do I know what that something else is or who I am?

While we are talking to Him, while remaining in the total knowledge that I’m drowned in Him. This whole space is the Divine Himself.

asmaan mi-yaanay……. lahaNg daree-aa…sat jeeHday tay……sar vay maahee-aa

My insides are a river, and on the banks of that river are seven holy shrines, to whom I have been calling “me”. When we feel Him, our consciousness takes bath in God, so His presence are those holy tanks.

janamaaN dee mailee…..surtee noo oh…….ujal karayno…..haa vay maahee-aa

He purifies the consciousness and makes it radiant; the consciousness that had become impure over lifetimes.

is dari-aa noo ….aakh-dee rahee ha-ouN…..maiN moorakh …… naadaan vay maahe-aa

This so precious, so holy river, I have been calling it “me”! Can you imagine who I have been calling me?

Dhaarnaa (end)

Please understand the difference between ishq and gratitude, the relationship between the two. We saw earlier that Maharaj Ji says: one who does ishq with Me, his nature becomes like Me, and My nature is to be grateful. Let’s understand this.

manhath buDhee kaytee-aa kaytay bayd beechaar.

He says there are so many intelligent people in the world but they are stubborn. They try to understand God with their intelligence; they don’t know that this path is about surrendering.

kaytay banDhan jee-a kay gurmukh mokh du-aar.

Because of their stubbornness, they try to understand everything intellectually and remain entangled in their minds - in lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego. Only those who surrender to God, to the Guru, are liberated. Gurmukhs give their head to the Guru - their thinking, their intellect; they listen to what the Guru says, obey Him, and do what He says. They are then shown the door to liberation. They are simple and just supplicate to the Guru that may I listen to what You are saying, may I obey You, and do as You say.

sachahu orai sabh ko upar sach aachaar.

This is beyond thinking. Only Gurbaanee can say something like this. Maharaj Ji says God is higher than everything but higher still is the Godly living. Truth is higher than everything, but higher still is truthful living. Please understand this; this is very, very deep! We feel God; I receive letters from you that I feel God here, so many things are happening. Maharaj Ji says that is great; I have revealed myself within you, but ask yourself: has your nature changed? have you become more like me? Maharaj Ji says one can be blessed and have many experiences but the mind keeps walking the same old path, the same old habits. Maharaj Ji says that if your nature did not change, then what is the difference between you and someone else who never came?

Dhaarnaa: (at 55:22)

Please watch what happens inside with these words. Maharaj Ji says, it’s all about words.

khat aa-i-aa sohnay sajanaaN daa……hai likhi-aa jag vich koun uchaa

A letter from my Beloved has arrived today, and in that letter He has told me who is the highest in the world.

uchaa sabh toN rab daa mil jaanaa……..tay subhaa rab day ch rahinaa hor uchaa

Meeting God is higher but higher still is Godly living. This had never been said before! No one can think that there would be something higher than God. Paaras is a mythical stone that converts anything it touches into gold. Maharaj Ji says if someone has the paaras but never uses it, would the paaras be higher or the one who uses the paaras would be higher? The world does not let us think deeply. We never practiced deep thinking. Deep thinking, deep contemplation is the nature of our true self. If we are doing that then we are moving closer to our true self.

subhaa ishq daa hai shukraanay vaalaa…..taahee-oN shukraaN ch jeenaa hor uchaa

Another word for God is ishq and the nature of God is gratefulness. It’s so strange that God feels grateful towards those whom He has created. It’s so beautiful!
