2447 - Khajana Darshan June 30, 2022 – New York  (English Translation)

ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

॥ ਜਪੁ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥  ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥

ਮੋਹਿ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤੁਮ ਨੀਰ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਰੈ ॥

In Gurbani, Maharaj Ji paints countless pictures of nature; this is a picture of nature – a fish in the ocean. Guru Nanak Dev Ji, in His first appearance, He extensively showed us pictures of the nature – Why ? What is the story behind it ? As we are walking towards our souls, we must know this.

This happens regularly in Bulandpuri Sahib, every 3-4 days they meet, and someone says look at the sunset – and everyone starts looking that way. A beautiful pink, light purple color fills the skies. When you see that, there are no thoughts, your entire consciousness is witnessing the beautiful view; the mind does not see this, it is our true self. Wherever there is an absence of thoughts, it is our true self, our soul. There is so much in the nature, but the mind does not have anything to do with it. If you remember, the first time we witnessed the ocean, its vastness, and all that emerged from within is ahhhh; there are no thoughts there, just a wonder, a sense of amazement that what is this! That thing that said ahhhh, that was our soul; there were no thoughts there. The soul witnesses His creation, admires it, is wonderstruck, but the mind is more interested in what it can get. Today, when you go home, just witness the trees on the street; we will be amazed at how God has created different shape of every tree, different shapes of the leaves, of the branches; the soul witnesses this and becomes awestruck. The mind on the other hand is interested in what is available for me. If it is a mango tree, the mind is going to say, are there any mangoes on it ? Since we are now traveling from the mind towards the soul, let us please recognize the difference.      

I was saying that when we see the beauty of a sunset, we look at those so beautiful soft colors, that sky is all colored with beautiful soft colors of pink, violet, light greenish-bluish and we go ahhhh, there is no thought there, we are witnessing some wonder, and that is the soul. The proof is that there cannot be any thought, and the mind cannot live without thought. Same way, if we recall the first time we saw the ocean, the vastness of the ocean and something within went ahhhh, how wonderful! That was the soul, there was no thought. No silly thoughts like what is a wave, what is the bubble; that would be the mind.

Notice the difference between the two – one thing is only wonderstruck witnessing His creation.

ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਹੈਰਾਨ

gun gaaye rahe hairaan

Maharaj Ji says, walking this path and continuing to meditate, when we reach our soul, then we are wonderstruck all the time. Until then, nothing amazes us. Sunny and other Sangat are here; remember how we witnessed the moon that was so oblong, it was not even round.  The soul which has no thoughts, it is in bliss and awestruck, our state is going to become like that. Right now, our state of consciousness is so poor, whether we like it or not, twenty hours we have thoughts. Now, this so-called ‘I’ or ‘me’ is so poor that it cannot see any wonder of His creation, because it is not available to witness that wonder; it has made itself available to all the thoughts. The one who was going to witness the beauty is busy dreaming.

Our soul does not do anything, it only witnesses. It says, the doer (karta) is there, Karta Purakh! It is always connected to the Divine. Right now, most of us can feel the presence of the Divine within but that is not meeting the Divine, it is just feeling Him.

ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਵੀਛੁੜੈ ਜੇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਈ ॥

milyaa hoye na vee-chu-Day jay milyaa ho-ee

You haven’t met Him. He shows up for a little bit, then you get up and He also leaves. The meeting never happened. Maharaj Ji says that our soul is in constant union with God. Sometimes we mistakenly believe that I met God all this time but the meeting, the union never happened. We only felt Him for all that time. Maharaj Ji says if you met Him then there was no chance that you could become separated from Him. He is an infinitely powerful force; if you met Him then how could you be separated; it must have been something else but not God!

Our soul witnesses His creation. It doesn’t want to do anything to the ocean, but what will the mind do ? The mind may start thinking, my fields are close by, how can I get this water to my fields. The mind has a different agenda. Maharaj Ji says:

ਅਖੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਕੰਨਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ

akheeN baajhoN vekhNa viN kannaaN suNnaa

To witness with closed eyes, to hear without ears. What do we hear without these ears ? Anhad Shabad, the celestial music.

ਪੈਰਾ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਚਲਣਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਹਥਾ ਕਰਣਾ

pairaaN baajhoN chalNaa viN hathaaN karNaa

To walk without using the feet, and then to do something without using the hands.

ਜੀਭੈ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਬੋਲਣਾ ਇਉ ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ

jeebhay baajhoN bol-Naa iyoN jeevat marNaa

And then to speak without speaking. This is our soul – it can see without these eyes, it can hear without these ears. It is our soul that hears the celestial music without these ears. As long as we keep hearing the celestial music, we are lodged in His womb, and what is happening ? We are walking towards our soul.

jeebhay baajhoN bolnaa

To speak without using the tongue; when we witnessed the ocean and said ahhh, those were words but there was no tongue. The most stunning thing is to say these things in words!

akheeN baajhoN vekhNa viN kannaaN suNnaa

To witness with closed eyes, to hear without ears.

pairaaN baajhoN chalNaa viN hathaaN karNaa

To walk without using the feet, and then to do something without using the hands.

jeebhay baajhoN bolNaa iyoN jeevat marNaa

And then to speak without speaking.

What happened now ? We went beyond the mind, where there are no thoughts, and what is that ? Our soul! Now please hear the next utterance. Maharaj Ji says:

ਨਾਨਕ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿ ਕੈ ਤਉ ਖਸਮੈ ਮਿਲਣਾ ॥੧॥

nanak hukam pachaaN kai tau khasmai milNaa

Our soul is witnessing that everything is happening in His hukam (laws).

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਹੁਕਮ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

hukmai andar sabko bahar hukam naa koye  

When we start witnessing that, we are very close to the soul, right next to it, but a sliver of the mind still exists.

That thing which witnesses this, our soul, is in union with the Divine. Our true self, our soul meets God, and not this mind, it cannot. This mind cannot even feel God! Within us, what feels the presence of God is our soul. As soon as we open our eyes, the mind kicks in, and the soul disappears.

Let us please see if we can move away from the mind and witness His creation from our soul. That first time we saw the ocean, the vastness of the ocean, that a very powerful alive thing is moving from the top to the bottom and is playing with itself by becoming waves – the mind cannot see this! Whatever is seen from the mind’s eye is the bharam (illusion). It is our soul that feels the Divine light when our eyes are closed. Once we become the soul, then we will feel the Divine light even with eyes open; we will also see the Divine light all around us, a very faint green color.

ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਜੋ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਅੱਖ ਨੂੰ, ਉਹ ਭਰਮ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ

haye nee jo disdaa akh noo, oh bharam vee ho sakda

O’ my dear, whatever these eyes are seeing could be false, just an illusion.

ਬਿਨਾ ਅੱਖ ਤੋਂ ਵੇਖਣਾ ਅੜੀਓਂ, ਭੇਦ ਯਾਰ ਹੈ ਦੱਸਦਾ

bina akh toN vekhNa aDiyoN, bhed yaar hai dasdaa

My Beloved tells me the secret to see without these eyes, to see the truth.

ਜੀਭ ਬੋਲਦੀ ਜੋ ਨੀ ਅੜੀਓਂ, ਝੂਠ ਵੀ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ

jeebh boldee jo nee adiyoN jhooth vee ho sakdaa

Whatever this tongue speaks could be false!

ਝੰਗ ਦੇਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨੇ ਇਹ, ਕੋਈ ਐਸ ਦੇਸ ਨਾ ਜਾਣੇ

jhang des diyaaN gallaN nay eh, koi ais des naa jaaNey

This talk is about the land of the soul, it is that country’s truth. Nobody knows about these things in this world of the mind. Jhang is the place where Heer was born. With rebirth Heer (our soul) is going to be born.  

ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਅ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ, ਐਸ ਮੈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲੇ

haye nee mera jee nahi lagdaa, ais maiN de naaley

O’ my dear, I don’t feel comfortable with this current ‘I’ , I cannot live with this status quo.

All the desires of the mind belong to this world, which can be seen. Just like God put worldly desires in every mind, He also put the longing to meet with our true self within each one of us. It is another thing that it needs to be awakened. Gurbani, Simran, singing, hearing is to awaken that innate longing within us. Rest, God is going to take care of. We just have to make our consciousness available and fully present to Him.

As every mind has worldly desires; this is God’s doing. There is another thing that God has put in everybody, the desire, the longing to realize the truth, the real self, the soul. It is another thing that we are not aware that longing is asleep within us but that thing is there. Gurbani awakens that! Gurbani knocks again and again and again knocks at the door of that longing. Maharaj Ji says:

soya man jaagyo  

The mind which was asleep awakens. It means that longing arises within us.

We have to awaken this thing!

ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ ॥

gavee-ai suNee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o

It awakens somewhat by singing (gaviai) and hearing (suniaia). Then singing stops, one is not able to speak, and only hearing remains. With hearing (suniai), the longing awakens further. Then there are stages beyond hearing.

That desire, that ambition. There are worldly ambitions, ambitions about that world that can be seen outside, and then there are ambitions for the inner world. I was thinking today, what should be the name of these ambitions of the inner world – to become peaceful, to become blissful, to become intoxicated, to be filled with love and compassion, to become the true self. These are desires as well. Maybe we can call these godly desires and the others are worldly desires. God awakens these godly desires within us and awakening of these godly desires is your success. We should introspect and ask ourselves, how fierce is the longing within me. It is this hunger that determines how soon we can become our true self. The longing is within everyone but only the most fortunate ones are blessed with sangat, the Guru’s words. Rest of the world is too busy chasing dreams; they are not even aware of the inner world and the godly desires and how to fulfill those. Maharaj Ji says:

ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਸਤਸੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਭਰੀਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

bin bhaagaN satsang na labhey

Only the most fortunate ones find the true sangat. How blessed we are!

That gift to long for your inner world is one of the most beautiful gifts to us from the Divine. This is the song of the soul. That is why I keep reiterating to not sing from the mind. Sing from the depths of your consciousness.

ਮੋਹਿ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤੁਮ ਨੀਰ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਰੈ ॥

mohey machlee tum neer tujh bin kiyoN sarey  

Let us please view a fish in the water, playfully going everywhere in the water, sometimes left, forward, upward, downward. See that love scene, so beautiful, and sing, that would be our soul singing. And you will feel a joy rising within.

Conversations with our true self.

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ਦੇ ਸੱਪ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਡੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ

ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਖੈਰ ਜਿੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ

tere birhoN de sap sanoo dangdey rahey

te aseeN khair jindey teri mangdey rahey

O’ my soul, the deep longing (birhoN) within me to realize you kept stinging me like a snake, and I kept praying for your well-being.

ਰਹੇ ਗੈਰ ਕਾਬਜ ਸਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੇ

rahey gair kaabaj sadaa mere te

I remained in the possession of strangers, the thoughts.

They were not my thoughts; I don’t know where they came from and where they went. We don’t think of thoughts, thoughts come to us and then disappear. We will ponder over this sometime. We are not thinking when we say I am thinking. We cannot think, the mind cannot think, it just entertains the thoughts and processes those thoughts.

ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਗੈਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਗੋਲੇ ਹੀ ਵੱਜਦੇ ਰਹੇ

te aseeNgairaaNde golay hee vajdey rahey

golay means slave.

I was known as a slave of my thoughts because I would do whatever the thoughts said.

ਆਣ ਸਾਂਭੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਨੈਣ ਅਸੀਂ

ਤੇਰੇ ਨੈਣ ਤਾਂ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਚੋਂ ਲੰਘਦੇ ਰਹੇ

aaN sambhey kadey naa naiN aseeN

tere naiN taaN naiNaaN choN langhdey rahey

That first time, the view of the vastness of the ocean, that wasn’t the mind looking at the ocean, that was the soul who said ahhh! The soul was looking through the eyes; it was you who was looking through these eyes, but I did not recognize you. You come into my eyes sometimes, but I don’t recognize you. The mind immediately opens the door from the other side, comes into my eyes again, and you have to leave.

ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਖੈਰ ਜਿੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ

te aseeN khair jindey teri mangdey rahey

Oh my dear soul, I kept praying for your well-being. Please stay alive. I will surely meet you one day.

Whatever our soul says it says from the heart. Even when it hears the celestial music it hears from the heart. It speaks from the heart and hears from the heart. Let’s sing from the heart please.
