2448 - Khajana Darshan July 1, 2022 – New York (English Translation)
ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Let us please become focused at the heart area or in-between the eyebrows
ਰੈਨਿ ਗਈ ਮਤ ਦਿਨੁ ਭੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
rain gayee mat din bhee jaa-e
He says, the last night just got wasted, did not earn anything valuable, Lest, today meets the same fate, that it becomes wasted.
ਭਵਰ ਗਏ ਬਗ ਬੈਠੇ ਆਇ ॥
bhavar gaye bag baithey aa-e
As the last night just passed quietly and the day arrived without giving any signs, the same way your black hair is going to turn white one day, before you know that, and this is how the life passes by if we do not wake up.
The path that He is making us walk. Today a lot of sangat arrived from Toronto. We think that I drove 8-10 hours, but the story is different. Maharaj Ji says it was not your choice to come here, it was my choice to bring you here. Maharaj Ji says:
ਆਪੇ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਦਿ ਬਹਾਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਿਦਾ ਕਰਾਵੈ ॥
aapey sangat sad bahaaley, aapey vidaa karaavai
Maharaj Ji says, God calls us in the Sangat and seats us, shows us the place where to sit. We usually look around and decide where to sit; that was not our decision, that was the seat He had reserved for us. Then He Himself sees us off. We did not see any sign that the Divine brought me here, He made me sit here, and He is seeing me off. But the story is so beautiful that this ‘I’ can never have an inkling of. Only our Beloved can tell us this love story.
He says you do not come to the holy congregation; I chose to bring you here. And why did you choose me my darling Beloved ? Because I feel you have that longing within you to reach your potential. He creates unbelievably valuable opportunities for us. It is up to us what we do with those opportunities. Any opportunity lost is lost for good. It will not come back again to us, never!
One thing that we should remain very aware about - to reach a goal, for any success, it is most important to walk towards it continuously, but our mind’s nature is to start something and then slack off. We should remain very vigilant that slackness should not happen. This desire to meet our true self, it is not a worldly desire, only the rare ones are blessed to have this desire. We are those rare ones. But the credit for this does not go to us that I am one of the rare ones. Rather, I was a lowly insect and look at Him who showered His grace upon an insect. I was an insect roaming in the streets, and he brought me in His lotus feet. When we realize this, our inside becomes soft, and pride goes away. Sometimes we help someone, and we start thinking let’s see how he or she can help me in return. God helps us all the time, but He doesn’t do it out of an expectation for something in return. When we see His mercy, His grace, it just kills us; it just kills us how merciful he is, how loving he is, how great His unconditional love is! He has nothing to gain from me. This is His compassion. It is very important that our longing to meet our true self does not become slack. It is of utmost importance, just like it is absolutely certain that we do not come to Sangat, he brings us here. We must not let the inertia overpower us. Inertia is not just laziness, it is to become less motivated for the destination. It is not the physical laziness, it is the laziness of our determination. Maharaj Ji calls it tamas surti, the lazy consciousness. So, inertia must not come close to us.
Our true self tells us:
ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਤੜੀਏ ਪਿਰਮੁ ਜਗਾਏ ਰਾਮ ॥
nij ghar sootaDiye piram jagaye raam
When we feel the Divine, our true self says, you are asleep in your home. You are awake to the outside world, but for the inside world you are asleep. His ishq awakens you – wake up!
Our true self says to this egoistic I that when you feel the presence of the Divine within, it is His ishq waking you up – wake up! When we don’t listen and become careless; sometimes at night we lay down and are still feeling Maharaj Ji, we say to ourselves I will get up a little later. Don’t you think our soul becomes upset when that happens ?
ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ਦੇ ਸੱਪ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਡੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ
tere birhoN de sap sanoo dangdey rahey
ਤੇਰੇ ਰੋਸੇ ਤਾਂ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਨੇ
tere rosay taaN sab hee jaayaz nay
ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਭੰਗ ਦੇ ਭਾੜੇ ਹੀ ਲੰਘਦੇ ਰਹੇ
varey bhang de bhaadey hee langhdey rahey
O’ my true self, my soul, you are upset with me that I do not hear your Beloved. Your displeasure is justified. I just exchanged years of my life so far with some intoxicants, not those chemical intoxicants. Every worldly thing that makes us feel good is an intoxicant - money, power, pride, etc.
This hymn is what our soul tells her Beloved, and Maharaj Ji reveals that to us that this is you, this is your nature. But what you are today, this egoistic I, is not you; this is just you in a dream! Our true self, it can never get separated from God. God expanded Himself and created space; we are within this space; how can we get separated! As the fish remains immersed in water, your true self remains immersed in Me. We remain in the space, we cannot get out of it, so we cannot get separated from God.
ਮੋਹਿ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਤੁਮ ਨੀਰ ਤੁਝ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਰੈ ॥
mohey machlee tum neer tujh bin kiyoN sarey
This space is You and I am in it like a fish is in water.
tujh bin kiyoN sarey
I breathe while being in You and I cannot live without breathing, so I cannot survive without You.
Please become awake and become conscious of the fact that I am sitting within the Divine, and then feel Him coming towards us from every direction; His waves come at us from every direction and caress us. How beautiful is our true self and how poor is this egoistic false I.
It takes a while for Gurbani to hit us; it happens when we wake up fully; but these dhaarnaas are composed in everyday language. They will benefit us a lot and awaken something within us. If we just sing them superficially like a song, nothing will happen. But if we understand them and feel where they are coming from, then they will awaken the same feelings within us.
ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਅ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ, ਐਸ ਮੈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲੇ
haye nee mera jee nahi lagdaa, ais maiN de naaley
I do not feel comfortable with this false ‘I’.
ishq has waves that we can feel. Today, I talked to Dr. Sumera who is a professor in Rawalpindi and did a Ph.D. on Guru Nanak Dev Ji. You may remember that she came to Kartapur Sahib but since we could not go there, she sent us a video. I talked to her today; her inside is so sweet. She ke[t researching on Maharaj Ji and God made her inside so sweet. She was saying I want to come here and meet Sangat so I have applied for my passport. Today, I had to come to Lahore, so I am going to visit the Gurudwara of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. It is right next to the Shahi Qila (Royal Fort), I said. Oh yes, whenever I come to Lahore, I visit there to bow and offer prayers; sohnyaaN naal tallak banyaa rehnaa chaaheedaa hai naa (ਸੋਹਣਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਲੱਕ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾ ) - one should keep the relationship alive with our Beloved!
ਦਿਲ ਹੀ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੁਲਗਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ, ਐਸ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀਆਂ ਕੁੜੀਆਂ
dil hee dil vich sulagdiyaaN nee ais pind diyaaN kudiyaaN
This egoistic ‘I’ remains in inner anguish.
ਸੁਲਗ ਸੁਲਗ ਹੀ ਬੁੱਝ ਜਾਵਣ ਉਹ, ਨਿੱਤ ਗਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੁੜੀਆਂ
sulag sulag hee bujh jaavan oh, nit gamaaN naal pudiyaaN
PudiyaaN means to get pierced as if by a thorn. Every day they become pierced with new pain, and this is how their inner anguish kills them; keeps killing them.
ਬੇਦਰਦੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਗਦੀਆਂ ਵਾਵਾਂ, ਐਸ ਪਿੰਡ ਦੀਆਂ ਗਲੀਆਂ
bedardee diyaaN vagdeeyaaN vaavaaN ais pind diyaaN galiyaaN
Uncompassionate and uncaring winds blow here; nobody cares about anybody’s pain here; everybody has their own pain in the world of this false ‘I’.
ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾ ਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਲਈਆਂ ਨੀ ਉਹ, ਤੇ ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਮਲਮਾਂ ਲਾਵੇ
kisay naa gal vich la-ee-yaaN nee oh, tay naa koi malmaaN laavey
Those who are hurt, nobody takes them in their embrace, nobody puts ointment on their wounds, because nobody cares.
ਹਾਏ ਨੀ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀਅ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ, ਐਸ ਮੈਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲੇ
haye nee mera jee nahi lagdaa, ais maiN de naaley
ਕਿਝੁ ਨ ਬੁਝੈ ਕਿਝੁ ਨ ਸੁਝੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਗੁਝੀ ਭਾਹਿ ॥
kijh naa bujhay kijh naa sujhay duniya gujjee bhai
ਸਾਂਈਂ ਮੇਰੈ ਚੰਗਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਤ ਹੰ ਭੀ ਦਝਾਂ ਆਹਿ ॥
saeeN merai changaa keeta naahiN ta haN bhee dajhaaN aahay
The world is a smoldering fire. I don’t understand anything about this world. My Lord was merciful, He took me out of it otherwise I would have been burnt as well.
Every day we should remain beyond this egoistic ‘I’, remain in the realm of the truth through remaining absorbed in hearing the celestial music.
We are going to spend more and more time from this ‘I’
ਤੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਿੱਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਜ ਚੱਲੀਆਂ ਵੇ
te gallaN nij deeyaaN aj challiyaaN vay
Today we started talking about our true self.
ਬੜਾ ਔਖਾ ਖਿਆਲਾਂ ਤੋ ਪਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਣਾ
bada aukhaa khayaalaaN to paraaN jaaNaa
It is impossible to go beyond the thoughts without the help of God; to go beyond the thoughts in the space where there is no traffic of thoughts, just pure loving consciousness.
ਜੋ ਗਈਆਂ ਉਹ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸਵੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ
jo gaiyaaN oh hoiyaaN savanniyaaN vay
Those who went beyond their mind, they became so beautiful!
ਪਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨ ਤੋ ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ
paraaN man to aap nahiN jaa sakde
We cannot go beyond the mind on our own.
ਤੇ ਗਲੀ ਸੁਣਨ ਦੀ ਉਹ ਵੜੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੇ
te galee suNan dee oh vaDanniyaaN vay
It can only be done through hearing - either His utterances, His celestial music, or His presence within. When our inside becomes very silent, His presence makes a sound, knocks within us – either hearing that knock, or by hearing the celestial music. Those who want to go beyond the mind, they enter the street of hearing.
