Transliteration Key for Gurbani
ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Dharnaa:
ਕੰਨ ਕਰੀਂ ਲਾਲ ਵੇ, ਸਮੇਂ ਆਏ ਨੀ ਅਮੀਰ
kann kareeN laal vay samay aaye nee ameer
Please lend me your ears, very precious times are here.
Maharaj Ji says:
ਤ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਗੁਣਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
Ŧarihu guṇā vicẖ sahj na pā▫ī▫ai ṯarai guṇ bẖaram bẖulā▫e.
He says that in the three states of our consciousness - its state in the morning, evening, and at night. In all those three states it keeps wandering outside.
ਚਉਥੇ ਪਦ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਲੈ ਪਾਇ ॥੬॥
Cẖa▫uthe paḏ mėh sahj hai gurmukẖ palai pā▫e. ||6||
One becomes Gurmukh by being reborn. Our true self is in sehaj. Sehaj means a feeling of infinite peace within; all of the consciousness comes within, sees from within, talks from within, hears from within; it never goes out. In the fourth state of consciousness, and that is the state when we get transformed from this egoistic ‘I’ to the non-egoistic being, there is no I, you, or him there - only one power is witnessed everywhere. We may say I or you for the sake of conversation but within, the same power is talking and hearing. The same power is talking to itself, bowing to itself; the same power understands and the same power is the one imparting the understanding.
There are two fundamental qualities of our soul - great love and gratitude. We can see this has nothing to do with receiving. The gratitude is not because of receiving anything; the consciousness is just filled with gratitude! There is no hunger for anything. Our mind is always on the lookout to take advantage of others; what can I get from this person, what can I get from that person. From these two virtues stem all other qualities.
Before we start walking this path, we look at the world around us and assume this is the only way to live. With His mercy, He shows us the real way of life. The egoistic I is full of worries, anxiety, and negative energy. Let’s thank Maharaj Ji that He has blessed us with sangat after three years.
Dharnaa:
ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਊਣਾ, ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ
vay mainu, tere baajhoN jyooNa, gunaah lagyaa
ਜਦੋਂ ਦੇ ਫਿਰਾਕ ਨੇ ਵੇ, ਪੈਰ ਘਰ ਪਾਏ ਸੀ
jadoN de firaak ne ve, pair ghar paa-e see
ਬੁਝੀ ਲੇਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਕੀਰ, ਭੈੜੇ, ਕਿਹੇ ਦਿਨ ਆਏ ਸੀ
Firaak means separation. Ever since I became deprived of the holy congregation, those were not noble days. I felt the lines on my hand which were fateful lines, they were fading away.
ਪੈਂਡਾ ਵੇਖ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਨ੍ਹਾ ਸੱਜਣਾ ਵੇ
painda vekh zindagee daa, tere binaa sajnaa ve
ਧੱਕ ਧੱਕ ਸਾਡਾ ਸੀ ਵੇ, ਦਿਲ ਵੱਜਿਆ
dhak dhak saadaa see ve, dil vajyaa
Looking at the journey of life when we were separated, my heart cried out so loudly, longing to be with you again!
Let us please hear the celestial music. In the beginning it is heard near the ears. Later on, we find out that it is emanating from the heart area. As we become more still, our consciousness will begin to feel this.
Gurbani:
ਜੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
jo nirmal seve so nirmal hovai.
Maharaj Ji says the Divine is holy, absolutely egoless, very tender, most loving, and when He makes us lodge in His womb, He makes us like Himself. Seve means to do ishq with Him. Whosoever has ishq with Him, he or she becomes like God too.
Ha▫umai mail gur sabḏe ḏẖovai.
The filth of ego is washed away by the Guru’s word.
Any worldly thought is always accompanied by a picture; if you remember a person or a place, that thought is accompanied by a picture. Since God does not have a picture so He can only be remembered by taking His name. When we remember Him, He takes our consciousness inside and makes us bathe at the seven holy tanks - at the root point, just below the pubic bone, at the navel point, heart area, throat, between the eyebrows, and the tenth gate.
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਕਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਰੀ ॥
Ŧirath nāvā je ṯis bẖāvā viṇ bẖāṇe kė nā▫e karī.
The consciousness that is pleasing to Him, He takes it inside and makes it bathe.
ha▫umai mail gur sabḏe ḏẖovai.
While singing, please feel the vibrating insides. Maharaj Ji vibrates our insides, wakes up our consciousness and brings it inside. The ego in us makes our consciousness dirty, filthy, stained - I did this, I did that. Only by taking a bath within, we become pure.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਵਾਜੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ
nirmal vājai anhaḏ ḏẖun baṇī
Maharaj Ji says the celestial music is so divinely pure music. How beautiful it is! This divine music is pure, holy like the Divine Himself. This music contains the divine virtues - love, no ego, pure, compassion!
ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ
ḏar sacẖai sobẖā pāvṇi▫ā.
Maharaj Ji says these holy instruments are playing at the door to my mansion. He is indirectly telling us that the celestial music puts us in the womb of the Divine, makes us grow, and we become our true self devoid of any ego, and receive honor in the court of the divine. Is this God’s dream or our dream that we become our true self by hearing the celestial music ? It is God’s dream as well as our dream!
Dharnaa:
ਅੱਧੀ ਰਾਤੀਂ ਖੁਆਬਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਣ ਕੇ ਜਗਾਵੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ, ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
adhee raatee khwaabaaN vich aaN ke jagaave jehDaa, samajh naa aave mainu kauN nee
Please understand this; there is a deep secret hidden in these verses. As we discussed yesterday, unless we open Gurbani with the key, we won’t understand it.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਵਾਜੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ
nirmal vājai anhaḏ ḏẖun baṇī
The pure celestial music makes us holy - and who is holy ? The Divine!
Oh, my mother, whose dream is it that I should become totally holy, and who is playing these holy instruments of Anhad Shabad ? He did not disclose who plays these instruments. How beautiful! Please see the love! The ego likes to make noise - drop kids off at school and say I love you, pick them up from school and say I love you. That is not love. Does love need to speak ?
ਸੁਪਣਾ ਇਹ ਕੀਹਦਾ ਬਣਾ, ਨਿਰੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ, ਤੇ ਵਾਜੇ, ਨਿਰਮਲ ਵਜਾਏ ਮਾਏ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
Please keep hearing the Anhad Shabad, the celestial music.
The two foundational virtues of our soul - full of great love and gratitude. Out of these two fundamental virtues of our true self spring the other virtues like loving nature, hospitable nature, generous nature, caring nature, compassion, openness, innocence - saying whatever comes in one’s heart, big heartedness, a consciousness filled with love, concern for others, sharing one’s self with others. If you are outside in the scorching heat and you see someone coming towards you bare feet, their feet may be feeling the heat, but your heart will burn! If the heart doesn’t burn then we have not become our true self yet. Our true self is so gentle, so caring, so compassionate and caring towards others.
Now, throughout the day, we are to see if our consciousness stays focused on the Divine. If it does then we are progressing towards the fourth state. It is easy for sangat who are from out of town, other states and countries; we should practice all day; these are precious times! As more and more of our consciousness transforms, the progress is accelerated. It is as if an object is dropped from a height and as it descends and gets closer to the ground, it accelerates. Once we start coming within, Maharaj Ji becomes more graceful and accelerates the speed of our consciousness coming home. Then a stage comes when we don’t have to do anything.
Our true self - filled with ishq and gratitude. The gratitude is not out of receiving anything; it is just its nature. You see anyone and you are grateful - but for what ? Perhaps it sees the Divine light in everyone and is grateful for that. Our consciousness is changing, we should feel it, and feeling it will accelerate the transformation; we will wake up and be motivated to move away from our false I.
Love, charity begins at home but the meaning of home changes here. Wherever we feel or remember the Divine, we are at home. Just like the court of the divine is wherever we feel the divine. His court becomes our home. Wherever we are - sitting, standing, in the car or anywhere else, we are at home and we are to share with whoever is around us.
Now the definition of home is going to change completely. Home is wherever we feel God or remember Him. Home is where we feel peaceful and secure. We are safe and peaceful in the presence of the Divine. Wherever we are, be at home, feel that we are becoming our true self.
When we serve others, whether it is in langar or anywhere else, how lovingly we do it - the whole story is about love! Our true self does not think that I should serve, it just does it. It has so much love that it does everything out of it. There are no thoughts that I should do it, you just get up and start doing it. We should see how much love, compassion, concern, and responsibility we have for others.
Dharnaa (revisiting earlier verses):
ਮਾਏ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ, ਨੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਛੁਹਾਇਆ
maye nee maye, nee sanoo ishq nay hath chu-haa-yaa
ਜੋ ਕਦੇ ਕਦੇ ਉਤਰੇ ਅਸਮਾਨੋਂ, ਨੀ ਉਹ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ
jo kadey kadey utrey asmaanoN , nee oh ishq saadey ghar aayaa
ਆਂਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਮੈਂ ਨੂੰ, ਨੀ ਉਹਦਾ ਨਾਟਕੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ
aaundiaaN saar hee faD us maiN nooN , nee ohdaa natakee mooNh dikhlaayaa
ਮੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਸਮਾਨ ਉਹਦੇ ਨੂੰ, ਨੀ ਉਹਨੇ ਭੂਤ ਗਲੀ ਸੁੱਟਵਾਇਆ
mainN te sabh samaan ohdey nooN , nee ohnay bhoot galee suTvaayaa
The first thing ishq did is to show that this I of yours is all ego and it is a drama; there is nothing authentic in it; it is a game show for the world. Then he threw the false I along with its belongings outside.
Dharnaa (new verse):
ਹੁਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਕੋਈ ਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਨੀ ਉਹਨੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਵਾਇਆ
huN de baajh koi aa nahee sakdaa, nee ohne boohe te likhvaayaa
Our true self stays in the present; the mind wanders in the past or future.
Maharaj Ji says:
ਅੰਧੁਲਾ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤਿ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਖਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
anḏẖulā nīcẖ jāṯ parḏesī kẖin āvai ṯil jāvai.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਰਹਦਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਮੂੜਾ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
Ŧā kī sangaṯ Nānak rahḏā ki▫o kar mūṛā pāvai. ||
The mind is blind, and is constantly on the move, how can this fool attain ? Attain what ? The true self! The true self stays in the present. This moment which is before us, every moment which is coming before us, is deciding our fate. If we are with Him then we are making our destiny.
