2460 - Khajana Darshan July 13, 2022 – Michigan (English Translation)
Transliteration Key for Gurbani
ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
This path that Maharaj Ji is taking us on where we are going to be reborn, it is wondrous and full of love, but a consciousness capable of pondering deeply and deep reflection is required to understand it. A consciousness that can descend into deep reflection; superficial understanding won’t work. For worldly education, deep reflection is not required. Someone gives us information about something he or she knows and we believe that I have understood it. That is how the mind learns to navigate the world and it is required, but here the story is very different. In the world nobody can even dream that in reality I am something totally different. But on this path, once in a while, our true self lifts the veil and reveals itself, but most of the time we do not recognize this.
Yesterday, we laughed when Maharaj Ji said that He Himself instructs, He himself teaches, and he Himself understands and learns. What happened ? Our true self laughed that yes this is true, but we did not catch it, that this my true self. We just laughed and moved on to thinking about something else.
The path of rebirth out of the True Guru is so beautiful and so intense that it requires all of our being to understand the process, and then to go through the process. The world does not teach us to go deep into thinking, and those who go deep into thinking in the world, they become philosophers and move away from the world. They reach a decision after thinking more and more from their minds but the understanding does not come from within. Here, on this path, we are to go deep into thinking but the understanding comes from within. We cannot understand based on the information received from the outside. As we discussed earlier, here in His court, there is no teaching, there is no teacher or student; it is just the Guru and chela (disciple). Guru says give me your hand, and the disciple says sat bachan (yes).
Many questions would arise in our consciousness but we should always remain alert, is this question of any value to me. For example, an email came in today with a question: Dear Baba Ji, can someone who has not merged with God yet, recognize or truly know if another soul has fully merged with God. The answer to this question is of no value to us, where is it going to help us! It is just to share thinking of the mind. The whole thing is that we are not the mind! This is not the question, we have no concerns, we cannot have any concerns for this even from miles away; we have so much on our plate to know who I am! The question is - who am I ?
Maharaj Ji says:
ਜੋ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
jo nirmal seve so nirmal hovai.
This whole hymn is about nirmal - holy, pure and Maharaj Ji tells what nirmal is. He says:
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
Nirmal sabaḏ nirmal hai baṇī.
Holy is the word, Waheguru, holy are His utterances.
Nirmal joṯ sabẖ māhi samāṇī.
Maharaj Ji says, the Divine is the holy light and He is pervading everywhere and in everybody.
I receive many letters in which they say I listen to Khajana Darshan multiple times and make notes. This is very important! I can only suggest but you have to put in the effort to do it.One who makes this kind of effort can revisit 10 days of diwan in a few minutes. The mind only entertains worldly matters and has to be reminded repeatedly about what Maharaj Ji says. If we don’t make notes nothing will change because it won’t enter our consciousness. Please make it a habit to take notes. The meaning of life is to live in discipline. The meaning behind taking Amrit is to become disciplined. To make a discipline and then remain in discipline. Maharaj Ji says:
ਤੈਡੀ ਬੰਦਸਿ ਮੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਡਿਠਾ ਤੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਣਾ ॥
Ŧaidī banḏas mai ko▫e na diṯẖā ṯū Nānak man bẖāṇā.
Oh my Beloved, I have never seen anyone as disciplined as you!
As long as we do not become disciplined, would we be pleasing to Him ? No! So, habits like making notes are ways to become disciplined. When we write something with our own hands, it enters into our consciousness. This is an amazing law of nature; it requires a long discussion and some day we will talk about it.
Nirmal joṯ sabẖ māhi samāṇī.
When we are sad, the consciousness becomes sad, and what is the consciousness made of ? Light and sound. When our consciousness becomes sad our voice becomes sad as well because sound and light are coming from the consciousness. Because there is light in the consciousness, we are surrounded by an aura of light. A sad consciousness will have a sad voice and will be surrounded by a black aura. If we love others then that love is in our consciousness so when we speak that love would be there, the humility would be there, and a very loving aura would be around you. You will be surrounded by an aura which is so loving, humble, and caring. When we are joyful then there is joy in our sound and the aura around us is full of joy.
If the aura around us in black, then the jot (light) within us is not nirmal (pure). Nirmal or pure, holy consciousness has a milky white aura. If one is very loving, their aura’s color is green. If someone speaks with love, their aura is blue in color. The Tenth Master called this Neelkanth Banvaaree, meaning the Divine’s throat is blue light - His utterances are full of love. Banvaree is another name for God, and kanth means throat.
When we come to sangat, our mood changes completely, our consciousness changes. We wear simple clothes because we don’t want to distract anyone or be distracted by what someone is wearing. If we are awake when we go to sangat, just the thought that I am going to a pure place (pavittar or nirmal place) changes our consciousness. The real meaning of nirmal or pavittar is a consciousness that has ishq in it. Ishq - not for any reason, not to gain anything from others, rather to give something. How lovingly He says:
Nirmal joṯ sabẖ māhi samāṇī.
These utterances spring from ishq and awaken ishq within us. Our consciousness changes when we come to sangat - how lovingly He talks to us when we come, His utterances so deep, so important for life! After doing sangat, our consciousness is more loving, more humble, more benevolent, more charitable - why ? Because we did sangat of the one who is most benevolent, generous, charitable (par-up-kaa-ree). He is so benevolent, so charitable , telling us something so deep, something we cannot even dream about. We have more love, more humility, more benevolence, charity, and gratitude in our consciousness every time we do sangat.
The real purpose of life is to transform our consciousness. Consciousness will change in the world too - if we go after money, there will be more greed in our consciousness, if you go after power, you will be hungry for a higher position, so consciousness changes in the world too but it keeps taking you away from God, but here in sangat it brings you closer to Him. In the world, one keeps moving away from their true self, here in sangat one keeps getting closer to their true self. These are two separate worlds!
Nirmal joṯ sabẖ māhi samāṇī.
He says that the pure, holy divine light dwells in all - the consciousness that has ishq in it.
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
Nirmal sabaḏ nirmal hai baṇī.
Maharaj Ji says, stay absorbed in the word Waheguru, it connects us with the Divine, and the Divine is ishq, His utterances make you drown in ishq. His utterances are for those whom He has ishq with, deep profound pure love; He has ishq for His creation. We will see tomorrow how these utterances affect us but please understand - this is very subtle and now we must understand this.
His utterances are for His creation that He has ishq with.
Nirmal joṯ sabẖ māhi samāṇī.
And He is not somewhere far away. He dwells within His creation and sends them love letters from within. Because our consciousness was scattered outside, we could not understand His utterances. If our consciousness was within, He would have made us understand in silence; everytime we enter a meditative state, He imparts a new understanding to us in silence; there is no need to speak! Speaking is necessary for the consciousness that is outside.
These things manifest in the sangat and those who walk this path earnestly recognize how big of a loss it is when we lose sangat.
Dharnaa:
ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਊਣਾ, ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ
vay mainu, tere baajhoN jyoona, gunaah lagi-aa
ਵੇ ਜਿੱਥੇ, ਮਾਰਦੀਆਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਸੀ, ਨਿੱਤ ਗੇੜੇ ਜੋਤਾਂ
vay ji-thay maardi-aaN hundi-aaN see nit gayrhay
In the holy congregation, I would feel the Divine light being emitted from me, and I felt myself so beautiful being adorned by that Divine light.
ਸਾਡੇ, ਮੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਣਹਾਰੀਆਂ, ਜੋਤਾਂ
sadey mukh noo shingaaran-haariyaN jotaaN
Let us please sing together. There is a very important reason behind this. Now we are going to understand things at a subtle level. We could not understand this earlier because our consciousness was not ready for it. It took us 20-25 years to understand things broadly. Now the story is different!
ਡੂੰਘੀ, ਮੱਸਿਆ ਨੇ ਆਣ ਉੱਥੇ, ਡੇਰਾ ਗੱਡਿਆ
doonghee masyaa nay aaN othey dera gadyaa
And now there is pitch darkness! Masyaa is the day when the moon is farthest from our side of the earth and it is pitch dark.
ਤੇ ਅਸਾਂ, ਨ੍ਹੇਰਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੰਗ ਨਿੱਤ, ਲਾਈ ਰੱਖਿਆ
te aseeN nHeryaaN naal jang nit, layee rakhyaa
And I kept fighting with the darkness every day; I never accepted that; I knew you would come back and I would be blessed with the holy congregation again.
ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਊਣਾ, ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ
ve mainu, tere baajhoN jyooNa, gunaah lagyaa
There are two big falsehoods prevalent in the world and the whole world has accepted that without any problem. Both are two sides of the same coin. One falsehood is that I am not. We are very motivated to meet our true self but when we reach there you know what is going to happen ? That I am not! Think about this! We are so eager to meet our true self and we want it to happen today but after being reborn when we are there, we will see that I am not. If I don’t exist then where is the true self ? Think about it! We do not go deep into thinking. If we start doing that it will become easier to understand. If we ponder and reflect on the dharnaas that we sing; dharnaas are composed of simple words and singing has a deep importance. However, until we make notes, nothing will settle into our consciousness. Day before yesterday, we read a dharnaa:
ਜੋ ਕਦੇ ਕਦੇ ਉਤਰੇ ਅਸਮਾਨੋਂ, ਨੀ ਉਹ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ
jo kadey kadey utrey asmaanoN , nee oh ishq saadey ghar aayaa
ਆਂਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਫਿਰ ਉਸ ਮੈਂ ਨੂੰ, ਨੀ ਉਹਦਾ ਨਾਟਕੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ
aaundiaaN saar hee faD us maiN nooN , nee ohdaa natakee mooNh dikhlaayaa
The first thing ishq did is to show that this I of yours is all ego and it is a drama; there is nothing authentic in it; it is a game show for the world.
If someone is playing the role of Raavana (the ten headed villain in Ramayana) in a drama, is Raavana actually there ? No! In the world, we play the role of a son, father, husband but none of them is there! If we understand these dhaarnaa’s it can help us a lot. It is not easy to understand Gurbani right away; it is easy to make claims that I only follow and know Gurbani. The only thing that becomes clear after we know is that I know nothing.
ਮੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਸਮਾਨ ਉਹਦੇ ਨੂੰ, ਨੀ ਉਹਨੇ ਭੂਤ ਗਲੀ ਸੁੱਟਵਾਇਆ
mainN te sabh samaan ohdey nooN , nee ohnay bhoot galee suTvaayaa
Then He threw the false I along with its belongings outside.
Who are we now ? I am so and so Singh, I have two sons and a daughter, I have two houses, land, so on and so forth - all the belongings of the false I. If we understand the dhaarnaa above, we will become alert that I am continuing to reinforce the falsehood everyday whereas the path I was supposed to walk is the complete opposite. Only when we understand and become aware of it, can we change.
Kā kī mā▫ī kā ko bāp.
On the other side of this, when we are our true self, Maharaj Ji says now see who is your father, mother, sibling. You were not! You were just in a drama. This is your true self! And who am I here ? You are not! (laughter). Yesterday we laughed when we read Maharaj Ji’s utterance that He Himself instructs and He Himself understands - that was our true self laughing that you are not, the one you are searching for doesn’t exist. The story is different - the one who is searching is going to die; the one who is searching is going to gradually die in the Guru’s womb. Two things happen in the womb of the True Guru simultaneously. One is that our false self diminishes every day and slowly and slowly it is no more, and secondly our true self starts emerging. The sum total of both stays the same i.e. if the false I is 90% and the true self is 10%, if the false self becomes 50% then the true self becomes 50%. So we are to stay lodged in the Guru’s womb for the transformation to take place.
We were talking about the two falsehoods that are prevalent in the world. One is that I am when in reality, I am not.
Maharaj Ji says:
ਨਿਰਮਲ ਵਾਜੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ
Nirmal vājai anhaḏ ḏẖun baṇī
The celestial music is sound and there is light along with it and it is pure, holy, it is aashiqana, makes you drown in ishq.
Dharnaa:
ਅੱਧੀ ਰਾਤੀਂ ਖੁਆਬਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਣ ਕੇ ਜਗਾਵੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ, ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
aDhee raatee khu-aabaaN vich aan kay jagaavay jihrhaa, samajh naa aavay mainoo kaun nee
We drink the Celestial Music, we drink that ishq. When our consciousness hears the Celestial Music, ishq gets transferred into our consciousness. That Celestial Music is ishq, intoxication!
ਮਹਿਖਾਨਾ ਅੰਬਰਾਂ ਚ, ਕਿਸ ਆਣ ਖੋਲਿਆ ਏ, ਇਸ਼ਕ ਪਿਆਵੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ
mihkhaanaa ambraaN ch, kis aan kholi-aa ay, ishq pi-aavay saanoo kaun nee
Oh, my mother, who has opened the drinking bar in the skies where He is serving ishq. To hear the Celestial Music is to drink ishq.
It is very important that we make notes. It is about understanding Gurbani and making notes in a way that is easily understood by us. So, are we going to make notes starting today ? Yes!
We should read the books in which we pondered over the stanzas of Japji Sahib. You will see that when we read those books, we will go into samadhi (deep meditation). We saw how written and spoken words, pictures, and music, affect our consciousness and help in the transformation. Music - the celestial music, pictures - those conveyed by the written words. Gurbani is written words. When we read these books, the written words will transform our consciousness.
There is a letter from a beautiful soul from England.
Baba Ji, while writing this letter I reflected back to when you and sangat came to Walsall. I recall the moment when you and sangat arrived from the airport and the joy that had been taken away by COVID came rushing back. I feel so grateful to Maharaj Ji for blessing us with the opportunity to meet with new sangat, with beautiful souls. Daniel from Germany comes to my mind right away and his beautiful keertan.
Dharnaa (revisiting earlier verses):
ਮਾਏ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ, ਨੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਛੁਹਾਇਆ
maa-ay nee maa-ay, nee saanoo ishq nay hath chhu-haa-i-aa
ਜੋ ਕਦੇ ਕਦੇ ਉਤਰੇ ਅਸਮਾਨੋਂ, ਨੀ ਉਹ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ
jo kaday kaday utray asmaanoN , nee oh ishq saaday ghar aa-i-aa
ਆਂਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਸਾਰ ਹੀ ਫੜ ਉਸ ਮੈਂ ਨੂੰ, ਨੀ ਉਹਦਾ ਨਾਟਕੀ ਮੂੰਹ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ
aaundiaaN saar hee farh us maiN nooN , nee ohdaa natakee mooNh dikhlaayaa
ਮੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਸਮਾਨ ਉਹਦੇ ਨੂੰ, ਨੀ ਉਹਨੇ ਭੂਤ ਗਲੀ ਸੁੱਟਵਾਇਆ
mainN te sabh samaan ohdey nooN , nee ohnay bhoot galee suTvaayaa
ਹੁਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਕੋਈ ਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ, ਨੀ ਉਹਨੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਵਾਇਆ
hun de baajh ko-ee aa nahee sakdaa, nee ohnay boohay te likhvaayaa
Dharnaa (new verse):
ਇਹ ਉਸ ਕਿਣਕੇ ਦਾ, ਜਲਵਾ ਮਾਏ, ਨੀ ਜੀਹਨੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੇਸ ਬਣਾਇਆ
eh os kinkay daa, jalvaa maa-ay, nee jee-nay geetaaN daa bhays banaa-i-aa
It is the splendor, the grace of the speck of dust which had kissed my Beloved’s feet, that came flying and touched my forehead - it is the splendor of that speck of dust that songs are emerging out of me.
Now, songs will arise within us. We should all sing whatever emerges within.
