ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
One thing that has a significant role on this path, to become reborn, and throughout this journey; Maharaj Ji tells us about it in hundreds of shabads - and that is singing. We should understand the significance of singing. In Japji Sahib, Maharaj Ji says:
ਗਾਵੀਐ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਮਨਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਭਾਉ ॥
Gāvī▫ai suṇī▫ai man rakẖī▫ai bẖā▫o.
Sing with love and hear with love. And what will happen ?
Ḏukẖ parhar sukẖ gẖar lai jā▫e.
He says that your sorrows will be eradicated by singing. We should ponder over this sometime - what is the story ? How can sorrows be eliminated by singing and they are replaced with joy. Maharaj Ji will help us understand.
One thing we should see is that Gurbani is in song. In His first, fifth, and tenth appearance Maharaj Ji used to sing a lot. God sings! What is the real secret behind it ? One, we know that if words are simply spoken it lacks the multiple layers of understanding but when those words are sung, it is dependent on the understanding of the one who sings. If a story is written, everyone interprets it the same way but if something is sung, everyone understands it differently.
If singinging brings such a great transformation in us, then the singing must be so special, so different from the worldly singing. One is ishq majajee - worldly love, and then there is ishq hakeeki - Divine love. If we sing correctly, then there is no worldly song; you will see that every song is between you and Him.
ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਗਮੁ ਸੁਣਿਆ ॥
Man cẖā▫o bẖa▫i▫ā parabẖ āgam suṇi▫ā.
I am feeling so joyful. I have heard that the Divine appears when we call Him lovingly. And I am calling Him, so He must be coming!
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਉ ਸਖੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਬਣਿਆ ॥
Har mangal gā▫o sakẖī grih manḏar baṇi▫ā.
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਉ

Maharaj Ji says that whose insides are singing, God loves that, and He comes running. Oh, my dear sister friends, I have heard that He is coming, so let us all sing songs of joy!
ਸਖੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਬਣਿਆ
sakẖī grih manḏar baṇi▫ā.
Grih means home. My body has become a temple of God because He is coming in His temple. Please sing with such a love that we should feel a laughter arising from within.
ਹਰਿ ਗਾਉ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਨਿਤ ਸਖੀਏ
Har gā▫o mangal niṯ sakẖī▫e
Please drink these utterances and feel what these utterances do to our insides.
ਸੋਗੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪਏ
sog ḏūkẖ na vi▫āpa▫e.
Oh, my sister friends, please sing the songs of His glory every day, then there will be no sorrows, no sadness, no suffering will afflict your consciousness. What kind of consciousness will that be ? Joyful consciousness!
Let us drown in our own sound while staying in a tent of the collective sounds of the sangat, feeling the collective sounds as music. Let us drown into it!
Gur cẖaran lāge ḏin sabẖāge
How blessed, how beautiful, how precious, how fateful was the day when I came to His court and took sanctuary in His Lotus feet!
āpṇā pir jāp▫e.
That blessed day when He took me as His disciple and blessed me with the sacred word, and I started singing the sacred word. Jaap means reciting again and again. Jaap and singing are the same thing - to repeat His name lovingly or sing His song lovingly. Please sing with very tender insides.
Anhaṯ baṇī gur sabaḏ jāṇī
Maharaj Ji says through singing the songs of His glory, or singing His sacred word, Naam, one reaches the state where one can hear the Celestial Music. Please feel these utterances with all your consciousness because spoken words affect our consciousness.
har nām har ras bẖogo.
Maharaj Ji says enjoy the intoxication of His love. He says that through singing you become free, your consciousness becomes empty of the outside, and God pours His ishq in the free empty consciousness and we become intoxicated with the ishq
ਵਸਤੂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਦੂਜੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
vasṯū anḏar vasaṯ samāvai ḏūjī hovai pās.
In Asa Dee Vaar, Maharaj Ji says if a container is filled with something, it has to be emptied before something else can be put in it. If we want to fill our consciousness with ishq then whatever is contained in it needs to be emptied first. And it is emptied by singing. How beautiful!
har nām har ras bẖogo.
ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ
Kahai Nānak parabẖ āp mili▫ā
Maharaj Ji says in whosoevers home singing is happening with such intensity that the singer becomes unaware of the outer world, God Himself comes running to that house.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਜੋਗੋ ॥
karaṇ kāraṇ jogo.
Whosoever hears this utterance of mine and wants to sing, then I make all the arrangements for them to come to sangat. He is the one who brings us, he plants the thought in us, makes all the arrangements, clears all the obstacles.
What happens in the world. Sometimes we hurt someone or they hurt us. Harsh words are said which hurt us. For some reason, we become sad and sometimes we face a loss and become sad, we become angry, greedy, egoistic - all these things wound our consciousness. Our consciousness becomes wounded in the world every day and singing creates a healing energy. Singing is the cure for the wounded consciousness. Wounded consciousness can never become peaceful or focus, how can it hear the Celestial Music! So, Maharaj Ji says, let’s first repair your consciousness. He says you are going to go into the world every day; your consciousness is going to get wounded, if not by others then by your own greed, own anger, own ego, own attachment. It is so important that your consciousness becomes healthy so it can walk the path, so sing every day to heal it!
When we are sad, we emit sad energy. If we sit next to people who are sad, after a while we will feel sad as well. If you are with people who are laughing or singing, your consciousness will be affected by their energy and you will start laughing or singing.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ਜਉ ਗਾਵੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਗੀਤ ॥
Nānak bẖa▫ojal pār parai ja▫o gāvai parabẖ ke gīṯ.
Maharaj Ji says when your consciousness goes into the world, you will get hurt at every step. Your consciousness can be healthy only if you sing the songs of His glory.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਰਮ ਅਸਾੜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥
Kar kirpā Nānak guṇ gāvai rākẖo saram asāṛī jī▫o.
Maharaj Ji says one can only sing with His grace. One may try different things but without His grace it is just a show. It is a must to go through the stage of singing because it heals our consciousness. Oh, my Beloved, please be merciful to me so I can sing Your songs and my honor is saved. We can see now why it is so important to come to sangat every day; that is His order and there is always a deep reason behind it.
To be reborn one has to come back to his parent’s home, which is within our bodies.
Dharnaa (revisiting earlier verses):
ਅੱਜ ਫਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਣ ਬਹਿ ਗਈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਪੇਕੀਂ ਆਉਣਾ
aj fer maiN vekhaN bai gayee mera pekiN aauNa
Today again I sat down and thought about how he brought me back to my parents home; I was lost in the world.
ਤੂੰ ਦੇ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਆਖਿਆ, ਤੂੰ ਧੀ ਸੈਂ ਮੇਰੀ
tooN de dilaasaa aakhyaa, tooN dhee saiN meri
ਮੈਂ ਸਾਂ ਤੇਰੇ ਪੇਕੜੇ, ਸਰਦਾਰੀ ਤੇਰੀ
maiN saaN tere pekDay, sardaree teri
ਰੀਝਾਂ ਚਾਵਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੀ, ਮੈਂ ਘੜਿਆ ਤੈਨੂੰ
reejhaaN chaavaaN naal see, maiN ghadiaa tainu
ਦੁਰਲਭ ਨੈਨ ਸਰੋਤੜੇ, ਸਭ ਜੜੇ ਸੀ ਤੈਨੂੰ
durlabh nain sarotDay, sabh jaDey see tainu
ਫਿਰ ਝੂਠਾ ਜੱਗ ਦਾ ਦਾਵਾ, ਤੇਰੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਣਾ
fir jhoothaa jag daa daavaa, tere te hoNaa
ਤੂੰ ਜਗ ਦੀ ਜਾਈ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਤੇ ਜਗ ਵਿਆਹੀ
tooN jag dee ja-ee samjhiaa te jag viaa-hee
They kept telling you this is your mother, father, siblings, relatives, and you believed them. Viaa-hee means to get married. Marriage means living with someone. You believed that I was born in the world and I have to stay here.
ਤੈਨੂੰ ਸਚ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਗ ਡਰਦਾ ਸਾਈ
tainu sach kise naa dasyaa jag dardaa saa-ee
In the world, nobody told you the truth; they were afraid that you might start going on another path.
ਰਾਹ ਇੱਕੋ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜੋ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਹਾਈ
raah iko ohnaN dasyaa jo disdaa haa-ee
The world told me that there is only one way to live life - and that’s the worldly way, to live life on the outside. And I never doubted that either.
ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੀ ਸੌਂ ਗਏ ਭਾਗ ਵੀ ਤੂੰ ਫੜ ਜਗਾਉਣਾ
mere naal see sauN gaye bhaag vee, tooN faD jagauNaa
I went to sleep in the world and so did my destiny. Then you came along and woke me up.
ਅੱਜ ਫਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਵੇਖਣ ਬਹਿ ਗਈ ਮਹੈ। ਰਾ ਪੇਕੀਂ ਆਉਣਾ
aj fer maiN vekhaN bai gayee mera pekiN aauNa
Today again I sat down and thought about how he brought me back to my parents home;
We must make notes. Today a dear son of mine showed me how he has been taking notes and keeping a journal. From today, if we make notes that my consciousness becomes wounded in the world every day and by going to sangat and singing it is healed; If we remember this, then we can take care of ourselves.
The world we live in, people are always bargaining - always greedy, always thinking about profit, always in the future, always interested in the petty things, the same old mundane things. We should be alert that the words which we hear and what we see on the outside, affects our consciousness. Who would have told us that this happens to you every day - your consciousness gets wounded and singing songs of His glory heals it. We would have thought this was normal and that is how life is. We must think of greater, higher, deeper things, holy things - think of beauty, ishq, truth, think of transformation, think of our beautiful true self, think of meditation, humility, helping others. This can only happen if we empty our consciousness of all the worldly things that occupy our consciousness during the day, so we can be peaceful and hear the Celestial Music. All these things can happen only if we are not greedy. When we are not greedy, only then we can become peaceful, only then we can come in the moment, only then we can go into the inner world. Other than getting married, the most powerful thing that pulls our consciousness and keeps it in the world, is greed. And all day long we are greedy for one thing or the other, and as long as there is greed in our consciousness we cannot come inside, we cannot meditate. So, we must come to sangat every morning and evening - sangat in the morning helps keep our consciousness empty for a good part of the day, and again coming to the sangat in the evening and singing heals the wounded consciousness. What a beautiful divine arrangement He has made for us!
Dharnaa (revisiting earlier verses):
ਮਾਏ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ, ਨੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਛੁਹਾਇਆ
maye nee maye, nee sanoo ishq nay hath chu-haa-yaa
ਇਹ ਉਸ ਕਿਣਕੇ ਦਾ, ਜਲਵਾ ਮਾਏ, ਨੀ ਜਿੰਨੇ ਗੀਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਭੇਸ ਬਣਾਇਆ
eh os kiNkay daa, jalvaa maye, nee jinnay geetaN daa bhes baNaayaa
It is the splendor, the grace of the speck of dust which had kissed my Beloved’s feet, that came flying and touched my forehead - it is the splendor of that speck of dust that songs are emerging out of me.
Dharnaa (new verse):
ਮੌਸਮ ਹਾਫਿਜ਼, ਹੋਏ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ, ਤੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਇਨੂੰਕ ਨੇ ਧੂਫ ਧੁਖਾਇਆ
Mausam haafiz, hoye nee maa-e, te andar ishq ne dhoof dhukhaayaa
Haafiz means protector. May God protect you. Tis the season in which I am protected; when my consciousness goes outside no one is there to protect it. Protective atmosphere has arrived; He has brought me within so I am in a protective atmosphere, and the essence of ishq is burning within.
