Total focus, please, anywhere in the street of the present, or if you feel Him in the entire body.
mere saahib tooN mai maan nimaanee.
Please don’t be in a hurry to sing. The main thing is to come in that state of consciousness which is utterly humble. Oh, my Lord, You are the only one I can feel proud of. But this is not the pride we are familiar with in the world. Oh, my Beloved Lord, it is Your greatness that You have brought me in your sanctuary. I feel proud of your greatness! To understand this, we have to go in deep meditation and reach that state where these words are coming from.
naanak gareeb dheh pa-i-aa du-aarai har mayl laihu vadi-aa-ee.
You are the Master, only you can save me. I cannot protect myself from the mind or from death.
The consciousness gets wounded in the world. The singing is going to bring our consciousness again to a robust, healthy, positive, loving state.
mere saahib tooN mai maan nimaanee.
tooN mai maan nimaanee
ardaas karee parabh apnay aagai sun sun jeevaa tayree banee.
What is the meaning of ardas ? It is very important to understand this for our rebirth. Majaraj Ji invented the word, Ardas. These things which we are talking about these days must be very clear in our consciousness in order to go through the rebirth. One thing to understand is, what does ardas mean, because this word comes numerous times in His hymns. If we are really hearing then it would feel like a sound from outside is coming from far far away through a tunnel or out of a deep well. Please understand this, it is beautiful - in Sidh Gosht, Maharaj Ji says:
siDh sabhaa kar aasan baithay sant sabhaa jaikaaro.
Maharaj Ji says that when I reached the siddhas, the most accomplished yogis at the time, they were sitting in their yogic postures and they shouted, may we the saints be victorious. Maharaj says, I responded:
tis aagai rahraas hamaaree saachaa apar apaaro.
Rehras means to do ardas. Maharaj Ji says I very humbly uttered, that I bow down in utter humility to the Lord of the Universe who is infinitely unique and beautiful. And then what ? He says:
mastak kaat Dharee tis aagai tan man aagai day-o.
I place my intelligence, my body, my mind before the Divine, meaning that I pleaded with the Divine that this body, this intelligence, this mind is all yours; it is your wealth, and please you use it. In another hymn Maharaj Ji says:
too samrath akath agochar jee-o pind tayree raas.
Oh, my Lord, You are all powerful, beyond description, and cannot be seen with these eyes. This body, mind, soul is all your wealth!
See the difference in the perspective of the siddhas and Maharaj Ji. Is there anything about victory here ? And what does it mean when Maharaj Ji says tis aagai rahraas hamaaree, that I do ardas before you, is the ardas for victory ? Then what is the meaning of this ardas ? We will come back to this.
Next, He says:
naanak sant milai sach paa-ee-ai sahj bhaa-ay jas lay-o. ||1||
Maharaj Ji says to the siddhas, you proclaim yourself to be a saint. A saint is one who makes you meet the Divine, and in whose company one starts to naturally sing the glories of the Divine - wah, wah. The Guru is the Saint; He is the mediator and helps us meet the Divine.
Going back to the meaning of ardas. Maharaj coined this beautiful word. ‘ar’ means other, and ‘das’ means disciple. So, initially ardas means to be a disciple of somebody. Usually we remain disciples of our mind, and a disciple is one who obeys the master. Then a state of consciousness comes where the disciple starts recognizing the Master’s blessings and feels grateful - this human body is His blessing, my eyes, tongue, ears, hands, feet, intelligence, my family, all are His blessings. To feel grateful is the real prayer, the real ardas. Later on, please sit in meditation and try to connect how feeling grateful is the true prayer.
Another thing that is important for rebirth - only when we are in a state of gratitude, the Guru brings us into His womb. Gratitude can only happen in the absence of thoughts, and thoughts can only stop when we are present. Even if we are not feeling the Divine, if we have the thought that I am sitting within the Divine, this space is filled with the Divine, no thoughts can come, and in an instant our inside will become so gentle and humble that I am within the Divine and all this time I kept hiding things from Him! Thoughts are not present under two conditions - one is when we are feeling the Divine presence or when we are fully alert to the presence of the Divine, and when we are hearing the celestial music. And when thoughts stop, everything becomes possible, even the impossible things become possible. When we are in a state of gratitude, even the impossible things become possible, and rebirth, which is impossible, becomes possible! Rebirth happens after one is completely dead but we are not completely dead yet, and at the same time we are in His womb - this is impossible! But, because of that feeling of gratefulness, this becomes possible.
Now, let us understand when maharaj Ji says:
tis aagai rahraas hamaaree
Maharaj Ji says I am grateful to the Divine. But for what ? He says that I am grateful to the Divine who has created this opportunity for these people to be brought on the right path. It is not about winning! See the humility! Gratefulness and humility cannot be separated; they are two sides of the same coin.
ardaas karee parabh apnay aagai sun sun jeevaa tayree banee.
I am awakening as I hear your utterances. I am so so grateful to you! Is the ardas about gratitude or asking for something ? It is about gratefulness. Maharaj Ji says as you start awakening, make sure you thank Hum, make sure you remain in the state of gratefulness.
Then, He says:
too samrath akath agochar jee-o pind tayree raas.
This body, mind, soul is all your wealth! You have given it to me to use it for a while.
raham tayree sukh paa-i-aa sadaa naanak kee ardaas.
I am at peace, I am becoming still, I am becoming loving. It is all because of you and I am so grateful to You! I always remain in a state of gratefulness to You.
This is what we should do! Let’s stop asking for petty things. He has given us so much - this body, sangat, consciousness, the precious understanding He has given us, and where He is taking us towards rebirth. We should always remain in a state of gratitude to Him all the time.
Maharaj Ji says, those who come in the state of gratefulness, I hand them over the key to the Celestial Music, and I say, here is the key to open the door to the Celestial Music. Now you can hear the Celestial Music to your heart’s content.
anhad banee poonjee.
santan hath raakhee koonjee.
Maharaj Ji says, the Celestial Music is the true wealth, it brings us in the womb of the Guru, it nourishes us in the womb of the Guru. He says that I hand over the key to the Celestial Music to the loving devotees of God, who remain in gratefulness, which means they remain humble.
Dhaarnaa:
tay gallaN, nimar dee-aaN aj, chalee-aaN vay
nimar andaraaN vaalee-aaN, hundee-aaN jo, oh tay rabb noo vee, paavandee-aaN vay
Those who have become humble, who remain in the state of gratefulness, they are very pleasing to the Divine.
binaa mangi-aaN chaabee-aaN , aan dayNdaa, tay pooNjee anhad ohee, lu..tandi-aaN vay
To those humble, loving devotees, He gives the key to open the door to the Celestial Music, without them even asking for it. Then they open the door and accumulate the true wealth - the Celestial Music.
Ji, we are sitting in His Lotus Feet, in the midst of the flood of Divine light that is emanating from all of us. First, let us come in a state of gratefulness - thank you Maharaj Ji for bringing me to the sangat, reserving a space for me, what precious moments you have blessed me with! Let us come in a state of utter gratefulness and become intensely attuned to hearing the Celestial Music. We should become totally asleep towards the outside and feel that we are in a deep deep space that is totally silent, and out of that silence this music is arising.
A daughter of mine from Toronto sent this letter. She writes:
Witnessing His blessings, my eyes remain watery all the time out of gratitude to Him. While hearing the Gurbani or Keertan, my body becomes numb. It's not that I go to sleep but there is total bliss.
What we feel from the outside is felt by our body and whatever is felt from the inside is felt by the consciousness. My dear daughter, this is anand bhaya meri maaye, and as long as you remain without thoughts, you will be in His womb. When we remain alert about His presence everywhere, or feel Him, or hear the celestial music, we remain in His womb.
We should make notes everyday. For example, from today’s diwan we can summarize:
The real meaning of ardaas is to express gratitude to the Divine for His blessings. And one can be in a state of gratefulness only when there are no thoughts. And one can stay away from thoughts when we remain alert about His presence everywhere, or feel Him, or hear the celestial music.
From yesterday’s diwan (July 14), we can summarize:
When we go out in the world and are disconnected from Him, our consciousness gets wounded with thoughts of anger, greed, pride, lust, and attachment. Singing His glories is the most direct way to instantly heal the wounded consciousness.
With these notes, we can revisit 10 days of diwans in a matter of a few minutes.
Dhaarnaa:
Utho vay rabboN, vatan sambhaalo, keetee jay dayree ki-oN
Laal jee, keetee jay dayree ki-oN
Oh, my dear ones, wake up and be the master of your inner world! Right now, those five robbers are the masters. Let us take control from them.
kithay nay dil, shukraani-aaN vaalay, tay kithay hai baymagrooree
Where is the heart which is full of gratefulness to Him, and where is the total humility! Magroor means to be proud, egoistic. So, baymagroor means humble.
kithay nay baaHvaaN, paak vay sajnaa, naam jinaa daa nooree
After our rebirth we are going to become the divine light, and that light is going to merge with God’s light. Where are those holy arms of the divine light, the arms which are going to embrace the true self!
kithay nay nain, muhabataaN vaalay yaar la-ee jo chooree
Where are the eyes which are brimming with ishq, brimming with true love, and that sight is a sweet dish for the Beloved!
ki-oN bhul jaaNday, geet sajan day, ishq banauNday jo
How come you forget His love songs again and again and again - the very songs that transform us into true love.
laal jee, keetee jay dayree ki-oN
Oh, my dear ones, wake up, why have you waited so long!
