ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Let us please become focused fully at the forehead in between the eyebrows or at the heart area (hirdaa).
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
charan kamal sang nayhu kinai virlai laa-i-aa.
Maharaj Ji says, rare are the ones who fall in love with Me.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਮੁਖੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
Dhan suhaavaa mukh jin har Dhi-aa-i-aa.
So blessed, so beautiful are the faces, the mouths of those who fall in love with Me, who keep Me in their consciousness (in their Dhi-aan). There are two meanings of the word, Dhi-aan, that Maharaj Ji utters - that where is our consciousness ? One is to focus (put your Dhi-aan) at any point along the street of the present as we do during meditation. (Street of the present - from the root of the spine, to the naval point, heart center, throat, between the eyebrows, all the way to the top of the head). To understand the second meaning of Dhi-aan - let’s say a 4 year old child goes to school for the first time. The mother is at home but her Dhi-aan is in the child - is he hungry, will he be able to ask the teacher if he needs to use the restroom, is he crying. The mother is not meditating on the child but the child is in her consciousness. Few minutes ago, the sangat was reciting Waheguru, Waheguru, and some of the sangat were looking around while they were reciting Waheguru. So, even though they were saying Waheguru, the Dhi-aan was not there. It is a common question that how to do Simran (remain in remembrance) while we are working ? During those times, keep the Divine in your consciousness, in your Dhi-aan.
We must remain alert, very awakened towards this game. It is a big game! There are games people play in their life - making money, politics, sports, arts, acting, so many different games. Those games are played during the time allotted to us in life, but the rare one’s play the highest game - the game is life, to put your life at stake! Say someone practices a lot for four years and after four years they win an olympic medal. They traded four years of their life for a medal. Then there is the game of life - what do we trade life for ?
Maharaj Ji makes a beautiful promise with us. He says:
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਨੇਹੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
charan kamal sang nayhu kinai virlai laa-i-aa.
The rare one plays the game of love with the Divine.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਮੁਖੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
Dhan suhaavaa mukh jin har Dhi-aa-i-aa.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖ ਕਾਲ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਮਿਟਿ ਜਾਵਈ ॥
janam maran dukh kaal simrat mit jaav-ee.
He says, those who play the game of love with Me, I bestow upon them their true self, which is beyond the cycle of life and death. Birth and death are both difficult times. It is up to us what game we play in the time between those two events.
Maharaj Ji says, I will give you a new birth in which you will be just like Me. Then, there will be no death and you will never be born again. He blesses us with this medal, the medal of realizing our true self. Life is a trial, a case. Either our mind is going to win or we are going to win. If our mind wins, we lose the game of life, and if we win, we win the game of life. Human life is a very subtle and delicate affair. To win any game, we need patience, perseverance. To be successful in life, we must persevere under trial because when we have passed the test, the Divine will bless us with our true self. This is His promise!
Other games are played in life too and even in those instead of the destination it is important how many obstacles were overcome. More important than where we arrive in life is how many obstacles we overcome in life. Those who experienced more challenges during their lifetime achieved greatness. Maharaj Ji says:
Maharaj Ji says those who really really work hard, only they win the game of life. We must understand this. These are very important times and time is passing by fast!
In a poll conducted by BBC World Histories Magazine, Maharaj Ji Ranjit Singh was voted as the greatest leader of all time, receiving 40% of the votes. American president Lincoln received 9% of the votes. What was special about Maharaja Ranjit Singh ? During his 40 year reign, he faced hundreds of mutinies. Many times he would appoint governors of new territories and they would become greedy for power, wanting to become emperors themselves. He crushed hundreds of rebellions, because of which he reached that status. His empire stretched from China to Iran, overcoming so many obstacles along the way. The obstacle in front of us is our mind, creating hurdles at every step!
In the last three years, we missed the opportunity to do sangat because of COVID but many times it was because of our mind. Maharaj Ji says, whosoever found their true self, it happened in the sangat.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤੀ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗਿ ॥
jin kinai paa-i-aa saaDhsangtee poorai bhaag bairaag.
Dhaarnaa:
vay mainoo tayray baajh ji-oonaa gunaah lagi-aa
I felt deep within that to live without the holy congregation is to live a sinful life, and a sinful life is one which becomes defeated by the mind.
baithee baithee day jadoN vay dig painday see vay hanjhoo
deeday puchhday rahay birah samaa kinjh langhoo
Sometimes when I would be sitting and a thought would arise within and my tears started flowing out of my eyes, and my eyes would ask - how long do we have to cry ? How is this time of separation going to be spent ?
kaday aa-ay see chharaatay, kaday harh vagi-aa
Sometimes a flood of tears would come and other times they would come in short, fast bursts.
jag puchhdaa sabab sir fayr chhadi-aa
The people in the world would ask sometimes - why are you crying ? And i would just shake my head saying, nothing, nothing happened.
vay mainoo tayray baajh ji-oonaa gunaah lagi-aa
Please remain with the celestial music or feel the divine.
In Michigan, I received an email from Australia. Baba Ji, what is the difference between ego and pride ? We must understand this. It is of utmost importance for us as we are going through the process of rebirth. There are two falsehoods that are accepted in the world. One is ‘I am’ and the second is ‘death’. It is funny that none of the two exist - neither there is ego nor there is death. They are both false and they are two sides of the same coin. We are going to understand these carefully.
Say there are waves and bubbles on the surface of the ocean. When a wave that is playing, rising, dancing, enjoying itself, and feeling that I am so beautiful, so powerful. That understanding that I am separate from the water - that is ego. The funny thing is that the wave is made up of water and thinks that it is separate from the water. Please understand this carefully. If this illusion stays, rebirth cannot happen. Death and ego do not exist anywhere but the world believes that there is ego and there is death but both of them do not exist and they are not separate from each other. They are two sides of the same false coin. If we have ego, then for sure death is going to come.
Let’s understand this. Please stay focused. Maharaj Ji says:
ਜਲ ਤਰੰਗ ਅਰੁ ਫੇਨ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
jal tarang ar fayn budbudaa jal tay bhinn na ho-ee.
If the Divine is the ocean, the wave, the bubble, the foam, all are made up of the ocean’s water
Foam means the crowd in the world, it contains very small bubbles, they are asleep. Then there are the bigger bubbles, people who become famous in the world. And then there is a wave, when we are together in sangat, we are a wave. The wave is made up of the same water as the ocean. We are made of the same stuff as God is, that is consciousness! God is consciousness and we are consciousness as well but we are a wave of that consciousness, and the wave thinks it is separate from the water, I am alone, I have a separate existence. Is this true ? No, it is false! So, ego is false.
Maharaj Ji says, how does one realize the true self ?
ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ ॥
kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.
We are a wave of the water, made of the same water as the ocean, and we are believing deep down that ‘I am’ and I am separate from everything else; I am a separate entity, which is untrue. This wave plays with other waves, develops relationships, meets with others but thinks it is separate. When the wave is finished,does it die ? Can it die ? It cannot happen! There is no way we can die! And there is no way we can be separate from God. But still we are busy hoarding money, why ? Because there is a deep belief that I may die and I need money for myself or my children before I die. This is not pride, that is different. Ego is the understanding that it is something when it does not even exist. This wave is also seeing that other waves are dying and it has a deep embedded understanding that I am going to die too because I am seeing other waves are dying too, they were alive a little while ago and now they are dead. We would never have the thought that I am going to die if nobody ever died in front of us. And those others do not die either; they arose in the ocean like a wave and then the wave finished and merged with the ocean. Maharaj Ji says:
ka-un moo-aa ray ka-un moo-aa.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ਇਹੁ ਤਉ ਚਲਤੁ ਭਇਆ ॥
barahm gi-aanee mil karahu beechaaraa ih ta-o chalat bha-i-aa. ||
Who is dead ? Nobody is, it is just a drama!
ਜਲ ਤਰੰਗ ਅਰੁ ਫੇਨ ਬੁਦਬੁਦਾ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਭਿੰਨ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
jal tarang ar fayn budbudaa jal tay bhinn na ho-ee.
ਇਹੁ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਲੀਲਾ ਬਿਚਰਤ ਆਨ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
ih parpanch paarbarahm kee leelaa bichrat aan na ho-ee.
Maharaj Ji says, it is a great play of the Divine and the rare one understands this. And He is making us understand now. He promises us that you will realize your true self when you recognize that you are not separate from me. He says to the wave, see that you are not separate from me. Death will come to the wave that thinks ‘it is’ and it is separate. When this wave is going to finish, or in other words when it is time to leave the body, it would have to let go of all things that it believed were mine - money, wealth, relatives, it would see that my death is happening.For someone who has seen the ego, the story is completely different, but if one’s consciousness is stuck in the world, they would see that my death is happening. At that time, God brings within all of the consciousness that was scattered outside, integrates it and takes it out of the body and the person sees this happening. Maharaj Ji says:
ha-o vich aa-i-aa ha-o vich ga-i-aa.
ha-o vich jammi-aa ha-o vich mu-aa.
He says those who remain in the illusion that ‘I am’, only they die, and those who die, they have to take birth again. Why ? This is not a punishment from God. Desires remain in those consciousness and He says go ahead and fulfill your desires. He gives us another birth, another body to our consciousness, out of love.
Maharaj Ji says our birth takes place out of ego. When a child arrives in the world, we believe he is born and that is what we tell the child as well. And while believing ‘I am’, he will die, and because he died, he will have to come again - eh parsang naa tootay - the cycle does not end! The story is very straightforward but incredibly intricate.
From ‘me to ME’ - from this egoistic I to the true self. In fact, there is no ME when we become our true self but we use it for the sake of conversation. At that point we would see that I am the ocean. The one that witnesses that I am the ocean is our true self, but because it is witnessing, it is proof that it is still separate from the ocean. After that stage, there is a small amount of work left, when the light in us merges with the Divine light.
Dhaarnaa:
ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ਦੇ ਸੱਪ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਡੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ।
tayray birhoN day sap saanoo dangdey rahay
ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਜਿੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ
tay aseeN khair jinday tayree mangday rahay
These letters are love songs from our true self to this egoistic I, telling it that you are not separate from God; you cannot be separate from God!
Our death is going to happen as well - the death of the ego. And what does that mean - death of the ego ? To see that I am united with the Divine. Our soul is inside, in union with the Divine, but we are scattered outside; we never knew we have a soul. We had heard about it but that was just hearsay. Now this false understanding is going to die! We are going to die now; we have to die in order to take rebirth, and our death means death of the ego, the death of the false belief that I am. As we stay longer and longer in the womb of the Divine, we will see light emanating from us.
miti-aa anDhayraa chand charhi-aa.
We are like the moon and where does the moon's light come from ? From the sun. Similarly, the light emanating from us is the Divine light. See how Gurbani explains everything - the light of the moon! An average person who did not go to school may not even know that the moon does not have its own light and it is the light of the sun. We are so blessed to be walking this path!
ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਸੀ ਮਰਕੇ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਏਂ
pataa lagaa see markay mildee ayN
ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਨੇਹੜੇ ਵੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ
tay eh sunayHrhay vee tayray aauNday rahay
In many letters of yours, your love songs, you sent this message that this egoistic I has to die in order to realize the true self.
In a shabad, our true self addresses the egoistic I and says:
ਸਾਜਨ ਦੇਸਿ ਵਿਦੇਸੀਅੜੇ ਸਾਨੇਹੜੇ ਦੇਦੀ ॥
saajan days vidaysee-arhay saanayhrhay dayNdee
Your Beloved is somewhere else. Where are you roaming, where are you lost!
ਪਤਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਸੀ ਮਰਕੇ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਏਂ
pataa lagaa see markay mildee ayN
ਤੇ ਇਹ ਸੁਨੇਹੜੇ ਵੀ ਤੇਰੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਰਹੇ
tay eh sunayHrhay vee tayray aauNday rahay
