ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥  ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ

man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.

While singing please feel the vibrating insides. We will become more and more awake.

Yesterday, we talked about what God has shown to man, that water loves two emotions – true love and gratitude. And God created the whole universe from water. First He created gasses, from gasses He created water, and created the whole universe from water. Whatever He creates, He dwells within that creation.

ਸਾਚੇ ਤੇ ਪਵਨਾ ਭਇਆ ਪਵਨੈ ਤੇ ਜਲੁ ਹੋਇ

saachay tay pavnaa bha-i-aa pavnai tay jal ho-ay.

ਜਲ ਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮੋਇ

jal tay taribhavan saaji-aa ghat ghat jot samo-ay.

Kudrat means everything that God created, whether it can be seen or not. For example, air cannot be seen but is part of kudrat. Because God created the whole universe from water and the nature of water is ishq and gratitude, the nature of the whole universe has to be ishq and gratitude. We can see that in nature, the trees, plants, grass, they all live in harmony, they respect each other, and love each other. Some plants embrace each other. We do not reflect upon these things because we have adopted a narrow view of life and do not look beyond that. Everything in nature exhibits love and respect for each other. Even animals do not take more food than they require and they do not accumulate food for tomorrow. Birds and animals love and respect each other so much. Sometimes a timid hare rides on top of a lion. There is ishq in His creation, in His kudrat.

God has shown man that the nature of water is pure love and gratitude. Please understand this. Gurbani starts from the point where science stops. What is science ? A person sees himself separate from God and His creation, and tries to understand things from that perspective. A scientist sees himself separate from God and tries to find out things on his own. But he doesn’t even realize that whatever he discovers is shown by God. He won’t acknowledge God because he is a scientist and has to show the world that he discovered something. Gurbani starts from where science stops. Maharaj Ji takes us beyond that. He says:

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਛੂਟਹਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਰ

man ray ki-o chhooteh bin pi-aar.

He says that your nature is ishq, and unless you become that you will remain in the cycle of birth and death. Ishq is our nature; it is different from the worldly attachment. We will realize this as we feel the Divine more and more. We should reflect upon and ask ourselves - how close I am to my true self, how much do I love His creation, how much gratitude do I have within me ? Until we become that ishq, we will remain the mind, remain in pain and suffering.

Today I read something written on a wall - when you smile at the nature, the nature smiles back at you. What does that mean ? It means that the nature of ‘the nature’ is to love, and that is our nature too. Not that worldly love, that is just some selfish behavior. Pure love, ishq, is worship.

Dhaarnaa:

ਦਿਲ ਇਕ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਹੈ, ਇਸ਼ਕ ਦੀ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਪੂਜਾ

dil ik mandir hai, ishq dee jis vich, hundee hai pooja.

The world has associated the heart with worldly love. And the heart doesn’t speak, it cannot tell the real story that I have nothing to do with this worldly love, this is all mind. One day the mind says I love this person, the next day it turns into hate. The heart is so innocent, it cannot do that, it only does ishq.

The three years that we did not have sangat, this path of becoming ishq was halted. In sangat, as we are becoming that love, we are in each other’s fields, which accelerates our transformation. When we come to the sangat, we sit in a huge pool of ishq, and the energy of ishq hits us. We may not feel that but that energy transforms us. Remembering those times that we did not have sangat.

Dhaarnaa:

ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ, ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਊਣਾ, ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ

vay mainu, tere baajhoN jyoona, gunaah lagi-aa

Without sangat, it felt like I was living a sinful life.

ਜਦੋਂ, ਆਇਓਂ ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਉੱਚਾ, ਢੋਲ ਵੱਜਿਆ

jadoN ,aayoN mayray vihrhay uchaa, dhol vaji-aa

When the holy congregation came to my city, I felt the sound of happiness, the drumbeats within me.

ਕੀਤਾ, ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਗਿਲਾ ਸੀ ਕਿੰਨਾ, ਦੁੱਖ ਲੱਗਿਆ

keetaa, ko-ee naa gilaa see kinnaa, dukh lagi-aa

We did not complain to you that how much we missed the holy congregation.

ਤੇਰੇ, ਚਰਨਾਂ ਚ’ ਮੇਰਾ ਵੇ, ਜਹਾਨ ਸੱਜਿਆ

tayray, charnaaN ch mayraa vay, jahaan saji-aa

I feel alive in the holy congregation, My world is in the holy congregation.

ਕਿਤੇ, ਘੱਲਾਂ ਜੇ ਸੁਨੇਹਾ ਤੂੰ ਵੀ, ਰੱਖੀਂ ਲੱਜਿਆ  

kitay ghallaaN jay sunayhaa, tooN vee, rakheeN laji-aa

If ever again the time comes that I am deprived of the holy congregation, and I send for you, please keep my honor and do come.

Please focus at the forehead.

ਰੇ ਮਨ ਐਸੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਜੈਸੀ ਜਲ ਕਮਲੇਹਿ

ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar jaisee jal kamlayhi.

Maharaj Ji says, become true love, look around, everywhere in nature it is love! The lotus flower loves the water so dearly.

There should be immense gratitude within us when we feel His presence at the forehead.

ਲਹਰੀ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਛਾੜੀਐ ਭੀ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ

lahree naal pachhaarhee-ai bhee vigsai asnayhi.

The water tosses the lotus flower around and in return the lotus dances along and feels the water is playing with me.

ਭੀ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ, ਭੀ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਅਸਨੇਹਿ …..

bhee vigsai asnayhi, bhee vigsai asnayhi……

ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਜਲ ਮਰਣੁ ਤਿਨੇਹਿ

jal meh jee-a upaa-ay kai bin jal maran tinayhi.

Maharaj Ji says that as the waves, bubbles, foam are created on the surface of the ocean, and they’re all made of the same water as the ocean, similarly you are made of water. Let us understand this - God made us out of water, so what is made of water ? The body is made of water, but not the consciousness. God has given us this consciousness to see what you are made of, who created you, and what is this consciousness that sees, hears, understands, plans, does so many things. This consciousness is not water. The story starts and one sees that I am this body, made of water; I am Rustam Singh. Then the story changes to - I am the one who made this water.

God created you and you are made of the same thing as God - surtee, consciousness. If you are feeling that you are separate from God, you are separate from His creation, you are separate from His nature, rest assured you are going to die and anybody who dies has to take another birth and come back into this world. The story is clear. The game is on! The chips are on the table. We have to win it!

There is a letter from sangat in New Zealand. This question came from within this person. We may have felt this question arising within us as well. Maharaj Ji says:

ਕਿਵ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ਹੋਈਐ ਕਿਵ ਕੂੜੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਪਾਲਿ

kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.

How can I know who I am ?

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ਚਲਣਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਲਿ

hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal.

Maharaj Ji says that to realize our true self, we have to come under the will of God. I want to come under His will, I want to surrender, but it is so difficult. What is the easy way ?

It is a precious question. In the first stanza of Japji Sahib, He told us this is the game. To come under His will, we have to go beyond the ego, surrender ourselves

Maharaj Ji talks about surrendering this body and mind in many shabads.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਜਣਾ ਐਸਾ ਹਸਣੁ ਸਾਰੁ

tan man deejai sajnaa aisaa hasan saar.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਸਉਪਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਾਈਐ

tan man Dhan sabh sa-up gur ka-o hukam mani-ai paa-ee-ai.

All these things that you claim to be yours, surrender that in His Lotus Feet. It is just a thought that this land is mine, these things are mine. Surrender this thought in His Lotus Feet. This thought is wrong. You say this body is yours - that is also wrong. Someone created it, made it grow, and is running it day and night - how can it be yours ? The only thing you have is a false claim.

The question is - how will the consciousness transform ? How do I become my true self ? In Fresno, we read a dhaarnaa:

ਬੜਾ ਔਖਾ ਖਿਆਲਾਂ ਤੋ ਪਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਾਣਾ

barhaa a-ou-khaa khayaalaaN to paraaN jaanaa

It is difficult to go beyond the thoughts.

We cannot remove these thoughts on our own. We cannot directly change our consciousness; we cannot become humble on our own. Our true self is full of humility but we cannot become humble on our own. If we make an intellectual decision to be humble, that will fall apart very soon because the consciousness has to change. Directly, we cannot become humble on our own. Directly we cannot become ishq on our own. Directly, we cannot surrender to Him on our own. Directly, we cannot take rebirth on our own. Transformation of the consciousness is essential, and the consciousness only gets transformed through parmatma (God). Maharaj Ji says:

ਜਿਤੁ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਗਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਥ

jit jit laavhu tit lageh har naath.

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਨ ਕੈ ਕਛੂ ਹਾਥ

naanak in kai kachhoo na haath.

Maharaj Ji says there is nothing one can do directly to transform oneself. In the nature, whenever transformation happens it happens through an agent. If water transforms into steam, it happens because of fire, the heat. Whenever transformation happens in nature it is due to an external force. Our consciousness can transform only through God. If we want to come in His will we cannot do it on our own. If we want to surrender to Him we cannot do it on our own. We have to involve Him. If He says, ray man aisee har si-o pareet kar, He says love me, bring me into your life if you want to become ishq. He tells us everything so clearly and we read it too, but now it is about drowning in it, immersing yourself in it. Be it any shabad, it comes down to kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai - how do I become my true self ? Maharaj Ji has used countless methods in Gurbani to make us understand and do this.

He says you are true love, and if you want to realize your true self, then love Me. Through Me, you are going to become true love, not on your own. We will see in the coming days, how. How does one become humble ? When we are feeling the Divine, the egoistic consciousness cannot be present, and consciousness without ego is humble. And how did it happen ? By bringing God into it. All the virtues of our true self are Divine virtues, so we have to bring God into the process. The Tenth Master says:

ਕਿੰਨੀ ਕੁ ਦੇਰ ਬੰਦਿਆ ਏ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਬਣੀ ਰਹੂ

kinee ku dayr bandi-aa ay dunee-aa banee rahoo

ਆਖਿਰ ਇਕ ਦਿਨ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕਮ ਰੱਬ ਨਾਲ ਪਊ

aakhir ik din tainoo kam rab naal pa-oo

How long this false world of yours is going to be there! It is going to disappear and you would have to face the Divine. If we bring the Divine into our life now, He would ferry us across, and free us from the cycle of birth and death. If not, then He will have to send us back into this world.

When we hear the Celestial Music, we drink ishq and become ishq - God had to be brought into our life for that transformation to happen. If we want to come in His will, there is only one way - to fall in love with the Divine.

Another thing - there is no final destination on this path. To keep walking is the destination.

Dhaarnaa (verses from yesterday):

ਅੱਧੀ ਰਾਤੀਂ ਖੁਆਬਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਣ ਕੇ ਜਗਾਵੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ, ਸਮਝ ਨਾ ਆਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ

aDhee raatee khu-aabaaN vich aan kay jagaavay jihrhaa, samajh naa aavay mainoo kaun nee

ਸਿੱਧਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਗੱਲ ਨੂੰ, ਜ਼ਾਹਰ ਕਰਣ ਲਈ, ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਠਾਵੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ

siDhaaN vaalee gal noo zahar karan la-ee, man noo bithaavay othay kaun nee

Maharaj Ji says, become absorbed in drinking the Celestial Music and your consciousness will become imbued with ishq.

(new verse)

ਦਿੱਸੇ ਨਾ ਲਲਾਰੀ ਉੱਥੇ, ਚਾਰ ਚੁਫੇਰੇ ਕੋਈ

disay naa lalaaree othay, chaar chufayray ko-ee

ਤੇ ਰੰਗ, ਮੁਹੱਬਤਾਂ ਦਾ, ਚਾੜ੍ਹੇ ਫੇਰ ਕੌਣ ਨੀ

tay rang, muhabataaN daa, chaarhay fayr kaun nee

I don’t see anybody there who dyes my consciousness with ishq, then how does my consciousness become imbued with the color of ishq ?

In Fresno, we saw that a person who sees himself separate from the Divine is bound to die. Questions arise within us, how to stay connected with the Divine all the time while working in the world; this is so difficult. Difficult or easy, it is up to us how we see it.

Inside secretly we all believe and think that it is very difficult to keep feeling the Divine and remain conscious about the fact that I am a part of His creation, that I am not separate from His creation. It is the easiest thing! We just have to wake up. God is continuously providing signals that I am with you. We can see clearly that God Himself is running our breathing system, our pulse, heart, lungs, kidneys. From the time a baby takes the first breath all the way to the last breath, God keeps the heart, lungs, and kidneys running twenty four hours a day without any interruption. We can clearly see that we are not separate from God. It is only that we are so engrossed in our false little world that we don’t even remember, let alone see it all the time that I am not separate from God. Awakened consciousness is awake all the time. It doesn’t have to make an effort to remember that God is running my breath, it knows it!

Dhaarnaa:

ਮਾਏ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ, ਨੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਛੁਹਾਇਆ

maa-ay nee maa-ay, nee saanoo ishq nay hath chhu-haa-i-aa

ਤਾਲ ਧੜਕਨ ਦੀ, ਤੇ ਚਾਲ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੀ, ਨੇ ਇਬਾਦਤ ਰੂਪ ਸਬਾਇਆ

taal Dharhkan dee, tay chaal saahaaN dee, nay ibaadat roop sabaa-i-aa

taal means to move in rhythm. The day we wake up, we will see that this body is not an ordinary body. This is the holy temple of the all powerful God, and every movement in it is nothing but His worship. The rhythmic movement of my heart and the gait of my breath is all worshiping Him. The heart is worshiping Him, the breath is worshiping Him.
