ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Let us please gather our consciousness and become focused on our insides.
Dhaarnaa:
ਕਰ ਜੋੜ ਅਸੀਸ ਮੰਗਾਂ….ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਠ ਖੋਲਾਂ
kar jorh asees maNgaaN…..tay fir maiN hoth kholaaN
ਕਿਤੇ ਕੁਫਰ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਓਹੋ….ਤੇਰੇ ਬੋਲ ਜਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਬੋਲਾਂ
kitay kufar naa hon oho….tayray bol jaaN maiN bolaaN
Oh my Lord, my Beloved, the Lord of the universe, first of all I stand before you with folded hands, and bow before you, and beg for this blessing that when I recite or sing your utterances, may that not be a falsehood in me. Please give me the blessing that when I recite your utterances, they should come from my purest being.
Kufar is falsehood. Please give me the blessings; it can only happen through your blessings, that I can recite your utterances with the purest of pure insides. When I say Ik OaNkaar, I should see that it’s all one.
ਕਿਤੇ ਕੁਫਰ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਓਹੋ….ਤੇਰੇ ਬੋਲ ਜਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਬੋਲਾਂ
kitay kufar naa hon oho….tayray bol jaaN maiN bolaaN
Let please make sure that our insides are silent, peaceful, still.
Ji, to talk about Guru Nanak Dev Ji, I don’t have whatever is required to say who He is, because He is so infinite, with multitudes of facets. We are going to just visit two of His hymns. He says:
ਤੂ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਦਾਨਾ ਬੀਨਾ ਮੈ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਕੈਸੇ ਅੰਤੁ ਲਹਾ ॥
too daree-aa-o daanaa beenaa mai machhulee kaisay ant lahaa.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji is talking about God. He says, You are like a river that has no banks, flowing continuously, creating new things, new beings, and all that. You are a river with no banks and I am a tiny fish in that river. How can I know your limits? Please see the soul of his utterances. Maharaj Ji is gesturing that the whole universe is the Divine Himself, and we are so tiny, little creatures; what can we know about Him?
Please let us stop for a second and ponder over this. If this thing becomes embedded in our consciousness, which is so hard because our mind is so restless. With this one utterance alone, He raises our consciousness so high that our pitiful minds look ashamed before Him.
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਤੂ ਹੈ ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸੀ ਫੂਟਿ ਮਰਾ ॥
jah jah daykhaa tah tah too hai tujh tay niksee foot maraa.
Maharaj Ji says you are thinking God is somewhere faraway. There is no way that you can be taken out of God, and if there were a way, then as soon as you were taken out of God, you would burst into death. Burst!
See the beauty, the trance of His utterances! The inner dream of His utterances that may this world know the truth. They are just fighting with each other; my religion is better, my prophet is better, his utterances are better. Who is better and who is not better, when it’s all Him?
ਜਹ ਜਹ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਹ ਤਹ ਤੂ ਹੈ
jah jah daykhaa tah tah too hai
Wherever I see, I see You.
ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਉ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ਜਾਲੀ ॥
na jaanaa may-o na jaanaa jaalee.
I do not know about the fisherman, and I do not know about the net. Maharaj Ji says that the whole world is talking about how our mind baits us with the desires, and we get into the worldly entanglements. Maharaj Ji says I do not know anything about these things. I do not know about the mind or the fisherman; I do not know anything about the desires or his bait to us.
Look! Is there any claim anywhere? Whenever Maharaj Ji talks about Himself, He says I’m the meanest of the mean; I’m meanest of the mean.
ਜਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਤੁਝੈ ਸਮਾਲੀ ॥
jaa dukh laagai taa tujhai samaalee.
Whenever I feel any pain, I run to You and cling to You.
Iqbal sahib is one of the most honored Muslims. He says that I don’t know after how many ages, the Divine light descended on this Earth, and the people living as robots have been illuminated; the Divine light has been lit in them.
ਬੁਤਕਦਾ ਫਿਰ ਬਾਅਦ ਮੁੱਦਤ ਕੇ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਹੂਆ
but-kadaa fir baad mudat kay roushan hoo-aa
ਨੂਰ-ਏ-ਇਬ੍ਰਾਹੀਮ ਸੇ ਆਜ਼ਰ ਕਾ ਘਰ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਹੂਆ
noor-ay-ibraaheem say aazar kaa ghar roushan hoo-aa
He said that God’s light descended on this Earth and everybody’s insides were lit. Those who were living a mechanical life as robots, everybody’s insides are lit.
Iqbal sahib who was a Muslim, and many beautiful Christian souls - we will talk about them and their quotes. They have written that the most unfortunate thing is that Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s name has been attached with Sikhs. When Guru Nanak Dev Ji said that we all are humans, I do not recognize any religion - is it possible that He could have invented another religion? He rose above religion and talked to all of humanity. He said all religions are beautiful, and you are beautiful, but I have something to say to you. He did not create any religion. This happened innocently though. When people say that it is unfortunate that Sikhs claim that Guru Nanak Dev Ji is their’s, we should understand it correctly. As all humanity claims that God is ours, the same way, when we say Guru Nanak Dev Ji is mine, it does not mean He is only mine; He belongs to the whole of humanity. He is as much mine as anybody else’s. Guru Nanak Dev Ji showed how to love God, how to love humans, and how to love God’s nature. He was an aashik, lover of the Divine, lover of His nature and His children. When He loved the Divine, loved His nature, loved all of humanity, is there any room that you can make Him stand in one corner that you belong there? Can you? No!
Dhaarnaa:
ਕੁਦਰਤ, ਬੰਦੇ, ਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ..ਆਸ਼ਿਕ ਤੂੰ
kudrat, banday, tay rab daa..aashik tooN
ਤੇਰੀ ਆਸ਼ਿਕੀ… ਬੇਮਿਸਾਲੀਆ ਵੇ
tayree aashikee…..bay-misaalee-aa vay
Your love for the Divine, for humanity, and for his nature is unique.
ਦਿਖਾਇਆ.. ਜਗ ਨੂੰ.. ਰੂਪ ਤੂੰ ਆਸ਼ਿਕੀ ਦਾ
dikhaa-i-aa..jag noo…roop tooN aashikee daa
ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਗਤ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੀਰ ਨਿਕਾਲੀਆ ਵੇ
vich saNgat shamsheer nikaalee-aa vay
Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his tenth appearance, in a large gathering of forty thousand people, took his sword out of its cover, waved it in the air, and said my sword wants one head. There was total silence. One person got up, walked up to the Guru, bowed before Him, and he said my head is here. Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his tenth appearance, took him in the tent and severed his head from his body. This happened five times. This is how he chose the five loved ones (panj pi-aaray). He named them the Five Loved Ones. He showed the world what is aashiki, what is love; that if you recognize that you are not the body, you are the consciousness then you would not hesitate to surrender your body. Those Five Loved Ones were the forms of ishq. They were in ishq with Him, with Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
ਸਾਹ.. ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਂ… ਲੈਂਦੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਦੂਜੇ…….ਕੇਹੀ ਆਸ਼ਿਕੀ ਤੂੰ ਵਿਖਾਲੀਆ ਵੇ
saah..tayray choN…laiNday rahin doojay….kayhee aashikee tooN vikhaalee-aa vay
Maharaj Ji says, you should love humans in such a way that your breath becomes nothing but love, peace, compassion, and others should breathe your breath. Your breath should be so fragrant with the presence of God, so full of love and compassion that others should breathe your breath,

Then He says:
ਤੂ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਮੈ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
too bharpoor jaani-aa mai door.
The whole universe is tightly packed with You, and I thought You were somewhere far away. He’s not actually talking about Himself; He is singing this verse to us, that this is what you people are believing.
ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕਰੀ ਸੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਹਦੂਰਿ ॥
jo kachh karee so tayrai hadoor.
Whatever I am doing, whatever I do, that is being done right in Your presence.
ਤੂ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਹਉ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਾਉ ॥
too daykheh ha-o mukar paa-o.
You see everything. But then if somebody asks me, I deny that as if nobody has seen it. But You saw it! How can I deny it?
ਜੇਤਾ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੇਤਾ ਹਉ ਖਾਉ ॥
jaytaa deh taytaa ha-o khaa-o.
Please let us understand this. It is such a down to earth message. He says that whatever we eat or drink is created by God. Where else can I go to eat or drink or to breathe outside of You? It’s such a down to earth message but so difficult to grasp because our mind wants to fly in the skies; it wants to become somebody. Whatever I eat or drink comes from You.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਏਕ ਕਹੈ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥
naanak ayk kahai ardaas.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੩॥
jee-o pind sabh tayrai paas.
Oh my Beloved, there is one supplication to You, that this body of mine and this consciousness of mine, I know this is your blessing to me, your gift to me. May I always remember that neither this body nor this intelligence or consciousness is mine. Neither I created my body nor I created my consciousness, it is all yours. May I always remember that whenever I speak, I’m going to use the mouth which is loaned by You to me and I should use it wisely.
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਜਹਾਨੋੁ ॥
aapay vaykhai sunay aapay hee kudrat karay jahaano.
When I look at something, You are right beside me, observing what I am looking at. You watch me when I look at someone - am I looking at a body? Am I looking at a friend or am I looking at a foe, or am I looking at God? What am I looking at? You are watching me.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਨੋੁ ॥
jo tis bhaavai naankaa hukam so-ee parvaano.
Because my body, my consciousness belongs to You, please You use my body, You use my consciousness; they are Yours. How beautiful! Please see the ishq. Is there any I? Is there any trace of I? Can there be any trace of I? This is what He is showing to us, that if you have I-ness then you have not gained anything from the gift of the human body and human consciousness.
The same Iqbal Sahib says:
ਫਿਰ ਉਠੀ ਆਖ਼ਿਰ ਸਦਾ ਤੌਹੀਦ ਕੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸੇ
fir uthee
aakhir sadaa….tauheed kee punjab
say
sadaa means voice. tauheed means oneness
The same Mr. Iqbal, the much celebrated Muslim, says that when Guru Nanak Dev Ji descended on this Earth and He started talking to the world, God knows after how many ages, the much, much awaited voice of oneness arose from the land of Punjab.
ਹਿੰਦ ਕੋ ਇਕ ਮਰਦੇ ਕਾਮਿਲ ਨੇ ਜਗਾਇਆ ਖ਼ਾਬ ਸੇ
hind ko ik marday kaamil nay jagaa-i-aa khaab say
Iqbal Sahib then says that a perfect being awakened the people from their sleep. He is talking about Guru Nanak Dev Ji. How beautiful! The whole world should understand that Sikhism is not a religion. It starts from where the religion ends.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀ ਲਦੀਅਹਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਭਰੀਅਹਿ ਸਾਥ ॥
parh parh gadee ladee-ah parh parh bharee-ah saath.
Maharaj Ji says you may gather trainloads of knowledge.
ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਬੇੜੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਗਡੀਅਹਿ ਖਾਤ ॥
parh parh bayrhee paa-ee-ai parh parh gadee-ah khaat.
You may gather shiploads of knowledge from reading or from hearing others.
ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਬਰਸ ਬਰਸ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਮਾਸ ॥
parhee-ah jaytay baras baras parhee-ah jaytay maas.
You may spend countless years gathering the knowledge.
ਪੜੀਐ ਜੇਤੀ ਆਰਜਾ ਪੜੀਅਹਿ ਜੇਤੇ ਸਾਸ ॥
parhee-ai jaytee aarjaa parhee-ah jaytay saas.
You may gather the knowledge in countless lifetimes but only one thing counts - have you become ishq?
ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਇਕ
ਗਲ ਹੋਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਝਖਣਾ
ਝਾਖ ॥
naanak laykhai ik gal hor
ha-umai jhakh-naa jhaakh.
Only one thing counts, have you become the pure love, have you become the ishq, that’s all that counts. You may have gathered all the knowledge in the world, going to so many different places; that does not mean anything. Only one thing counts - have you become ishq? This is His message, this is Oneness. Until we become ishq, all the talk that there is one God, we are all one, is empty talk.
We have heard that God is love. He says unless you become the ishq, the oneness in the universe cannot be realized, cannot be witnessed, cannot happen. It has to start from you. But, if you are so engrossed that I’m Christian, I’m Buddhist, I’m Sikh, I’m Hindu, I’m Muslim, I’m Jaini, I’m Jew, He says forget about it, forget about becoming love. He says I’m talking about Mount Everest, and you are talking about the feet of Mount Everest.
Dhaarnaa:
ਇਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਵਾਲਿਆ…. ਅੱਜ ਜੋ ਖ਼ੱਤ ਆਇਆ
ishkaaN vaali-aa.…aj jo khat aa-i-aa
ਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅੱਜ ਤੁੰ….. ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਵਾਲ ਪਾਇਆ
tay sanoo aj tooN ……jih-rhaa savaal paa-i-aa
I call His hymns, His letters to humanity. Oh my Beloved, this letter which I received from You today, in which you have questioned me: have you become ishq?
ਸਵਾਲ ਤੇਰੇ ਨੇ….. ਚੈਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਣ ਦੇਣਾ
savaal tayray nay….. chain nahee lain daynaa
This question has startled me; this question has awakened me, and I have become restless.
ਜੱਦ ਤੱਕ ਨਾ ……ਅੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਤੂੰ ਆਇਆ
jad tak naa …..akh vich tooN aa-i-aa
Now I know that until you come and sit in my eyes, I cannot become peaceful, I cannot become love, because only when you come and sit in my eyes, I would be able to see oneness.

It’s unimaginable that from where God has brought you, to bless me with the dust of your feet. I am so profoundly grateful for each and everyone, for this priceless gift of your sight, your presence, the dust of your feet.
For those who could not come to sangat: It is so painful to hear their voice, to feel their tears. Many people could not come from abroad; they bought the tickets but did not get the visa. Their pain was unbearable when they called and stated their sadness. But my dear ones, I want to assure you that your body may not have arrived but we all feel that you are here.

ਤੂੰ ਤੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਿਰ ਦਿਸਦਾ ਏਂ……ਜਿਸਮ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਗੈਰ-ਹਾਜ਼ਿਰ
tooN tay haazir disdaa ayN….jisam bhaavayN gair-haazir

I was saying that in Gurbani it is written that when Guru Nanak Dev Ji appeared on this Earth, a powerful lamp of Divine light lit up.
ਬਲਿਓ ਚਰਾਗੁ ਅੰਧੵਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਭ ਕਲਿ ਉਧਰੀ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਧਰਮ
bali-o charaag anDh-yaar meh sabh kal uDhree ik naam Dharam.
Devoted to that day, we are going to remember that, and we will see tonight, what is that lamp which is burning today too.
Now, there is a question for you.

ਮੇਰੇ ਰੰਗਲੇ ਦੇਸ ਦਿਆ ਰਾਹੀਆ ………ਦੋ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਾ ਜਾ ਯਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ
mayray raNgalay days di-aa raahee-aa……..do galaaN sunaa jaa yaar dee-aaN
Oh you, the one who is on the inner journey, kindly tell me a couple things about my Beloved.
ਹਾਲ ਪੁੱਛੇ ਤੇ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਆਖੀਂ ……..ਤੇਰੇ ਬੋਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਾਦੂ ਖੇਡਦੀ ਆਂ
haal puchhay tay oHnoo aakheeN……tayray bolaaN day jaadoo khayd-dee aaN
If He asks about me, tell Him that my head keeps spinning with the magic of His utterances.
