Please feel that when we sit on the floor, how instantly the state of our consciousness changes. Instantly, we become humble, we become receptive; there is no pride, no real ego; we are peaceful. Everything that we do has profound effects on our consciousness, the whole thing is transformation.

Those of us who really are longing to wake up, and making real conscious efforts to wake up. Let us please be very honest with ourselves; only that will help, if we remain totally honest with ourselves. All of us are making efforts but the intensity of making efforts differs from one person to another. So those please, who wholeheartedly, for whom this has become the number one priority in life, please raise your hands.

Thank you so much. Almost the entire sangat raised their hands. This is His direct, and so generous grace. With His grace, this is happening.

Maharaj Ji wakes us up from the lower end of the spine and takes us upward. He says:

bhaa-ee ray gur bin sahaj na ho-ay.

He says: Oh my dear dear brother, without the True Guru, we cannot become peaceful, poised, serene, still.

The word sahaj, serenity, is one of the most used words by Him, and its meaning must be understood.

Our egoistic self was born when we started making our own world. When a little baby arrives into the world, the baby doesn’t have any words, doesn’t know what mother means, but has the feeling. After a few days, the baby starts feeling that this person comes and feeds me, changes me, embraces me against his or her being, loves me so dearly; this feeling starts dwelling within him. Babies do not know the word mine but start developing this feeling that this person is mine. This is how the baby starts becoming attached. So, as this ‘I’ is born, five things are born with it - lust, attachment, greed, anger, ego, and they remain with this ‘I’. There is no way that this ‘false I’ can be separated from those five emotions.

The real meaning of sahaj is the one who takes birth along with something. Sahaj also applies to what is born along with our ‘false I’ but since sahaj is used for our inside state mostly, it does not get used for these external five emotions. But the meaning of sahaj is the same; that those five emotions are born along with our ‘false I’. There is no way this ‘false I’ can be separated from those five emotions. Do we understand this?

When the Divine wakes us up, and brings us upward along the spine, at the level of the heart, there is a point just behind the heart and along the spine, called hirdaa. There is no translation for this word hirdaa. Behind the heart, along the spine there is this spot, which is the house of love. When He brings us here and asks us to stay with Him at this point, that’s where our re-birth happens out of love.

Sahaj means the one who takes birth with something. He says that when you are awakened and start recognizing your true self, along with your true self, deep silence, deep peace, deep stillness would be born too. Just like the false self cannot shake off those five emotions, He says, exactly that way sahaj will not leave you. Unthinkable! The truth cannot be thought about. We won’t find these things in any book; it comes from within.

Maharaj Ji says that when you are reborn, along with that, deep silence, peace, stillness, serenity will be born too, and they will stay with you. You won’t have to worry about losing them.

bhaa-ee ray gur bin sahaj na ho-ay.

Maharaj Ji says that without the Guru, sahaj, that rebirth, that deep sense of silence cannot be had. How lovingly He says, bhaa-ee ray - oh my brother, oh my dear brother!

Those who are capable of looking within, they can recognize that with this ‘false I’ dwells all noise. We may remain silent from the outside but there would be noise inside.

He said that in the very beginning, in Japji Sahib, that this I of yours can never become silent; there would be noise in it all the time, nonsense noise. He says there is no way that you can become silent, really silent within. There is no way you can become peaceful within. There is no way you can throw the inner noise outside because that has to stay with the false I. And with our true self, dwells the deep stillness, serenity - sahaj.

Please see that after 26-27 years, we are just trying to hear His first utterance. Please, let us not fool ourselves that we are hearing now; that we are becoming peaceful. The noise is still there. Sometimes money makes a noise in us; sometimes our friends and family make noise in us; sometimes our health makes noise in us; so many noises! He said in the very beginning of Guru Granth Sahib Ji:

ਚੁਪੈ ਚੁਪ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਲਾਇ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ

chupai chup na hova-ee jay laa-ay rahaa liv taar.

See the beauty! He said it in the very beginning and we are in a hurry to read what else Maharaj Ji is saying.

So, along with our true self is born a deep silence, deep stillness, serenity - sahaj. If we watch a newly born child, and feel the silence in him, around him. The only time his silence is broken is when the child is hungry or is wet and needs to be cleaned. The child is sleeping, and that sleep is so silent; there is no noise within him, as if he is not even there.

When we are about to fall asleep, just before we fall asleep, if we watch ourselves, we will feel that some silence descends on us. If we are in the midst of the noise of thoughts, we cannot fall asleep. When we go to sleep, we become silent; there’s no noise within us, but that is not the silence Maharaj Ji is talking about, when He says:

ਚੁਪੈ ਚੁਪ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਲਾਇ ਰਹਾ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰ

chupai chup na hova-ee jay laa-ay rahaa liv taar.

That silence (when we go to sleep) is the silence of a graveyard. That is death, that’s graveyard! Maharaj Ji is not talking about the silence in a graveyard.

cha-uthay pad meh sahj hai gurmukh palai paa-ay.

chauthaa pad - the fourth state, is when we are reborn.

Maharaj Ji says when you would be reborn, along with that Sahaj, a deep silence will also take birth. But that silence will not be the silence of a graveyard; that silence will be the silence of a garden, silence of life, silence of aliveness, silence of beauty, silence of truth. That silence will be the real grace. That silence is not dead but it is throbbing with life, laughing, dancing, spreading fragrances around. That’s not the silence of death, that’s the silence of truth. The new you, the real you is Truth.

sabdai hee tay sahj oopjai har paa-i-aa sach so-ay.

He says your new birth, the true you, are going to be born out of the truth. And along with the true you, will take birth and stay with that real you, the serenity, which cannot be talked about; it can only be experienced, lived, celebrated!

He says, of course this deep silence will take birth with the true you. But because you’ll be born out of God, your roots will be in God, so you’ll also have God! What a bargain for this miserable false I, which we are so afraid to lose.

gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o

dukh parhar sukh ghar lai jaa-ay

He says this false I  is nothing but misery; give Me this miserable egoistic self and I will give you everlasting peace. Only one who is somewhat peaceful within will do this trade. If one thinks that he or she is a body and is running around outside, what would he know about this?

sabdai hee tay sahj oopjai har paa-i-aa sach so-ay.

When you are reborn, not only will you have sahaj, you will also get God. God is also known as truth. Truth remains forever, never changes, remains ever youthful, and is full of life. He says your true self will be all life while this false self is all thinking; there is no life in it.

Now we must please remain awake to our state of being; again and again, catch ourselves becoming noisy; catch ourselves falling into the false self, into the dream state of thinking, dreaming. Let us wake up through feeling the Divine, by remaining where our bodies are.

sabdai hee tay sahj oopjai har paa-i-aa sach so-ay.

Let’s please feel the silence within, and become so intensely absorbed in singing this truth, while becoming acutely conscious, feeling the Divine at the hirdaa, the heart area.  When we sing, we will be able to recognize if our voice is coming from some inner silence. While singing, please also feel that more silence is entering within.

There should be an excitement within us that I’m going to be reborn out of God! How beautiful is the realization that I have no recollection of when this body was born, but my rebirth is going to take place right in front of my eyes. What a miracle! What a blessing! What an unimaginable arrangement!

sabdai hee tay sahj oopjai har paa-i-aa sach so-ay.

If we are feeling the Divine at the heart area, we should also remain aware that my new birth is going to take place from here.
