Please let us close our eyes and come at the hirdaa, the heart area, and remain fully focused.
kabeer alah kee kar bandagee jih simrat dukh jaa-ay
Maharaj Ji says, oh my dear friends, have devotional love with Allah. By remembering Him, you would be freed of the pains of the ego-centered I. Ego-centered I - He underlines it that this is the pain; all other pains originate from this. The mother of all pains, the mother of all worries, the mother of all sufferings, the mother of all anxieties, the mother of all desires, is the wrong understanding that I am separate from Him or His creation. Until the truth is known; the truth is that we are one with Him, we are part of nature, we are part of His creation; until this is not realized, not just understood intellectually but until this is not experienced that I am inseparable from Him, He says, you are going to remain in the fire, in pain.
It’s the wrong understanding, false belief that if I get this and if I have that then I’m going to become peaceful. No, you are going to remain burning! Mind is the name of the fire; not one, not two, not three, but 5 of them - lust, anger, attachment, greed, ego. One fire is enough to consume us but they are a group of five.
He says:
dil meh saaN-ee pargatai bujhai balantee naaN-ay
He says when you remain in meditation, focused at the hirdaa (heart area), one day suddenly the Divine will appear there and you will become peaceful. His presence will extinguish the fire of the mind because Him and mind cannot remain together.
He says ego and God are at war with each other. Either there will be ego in you or there will be God in you. He says both of them can never dwell at the same time within you. It would be either your egoistic I or God.
dil meh saaN-ee pargatai bujhai balantee naaN-ay
Please remain at the hirdaa (heart area) with the Divine. His presence will be felt either as a pressure there, or something pumping at that point, or His presence revolving there in an anti-clockwise direction.
Yesterday we started talking about how the Divine is not only beyond the mind but also beyond the heart. The mind has created a world of its own. We know that the mind is always busy in thoughts about its own world all the time. Mind cannot create anything; the mind can only make something from that which already exists. Mind can make different types of furniture, musical instruments, many things from the wood, or it can make many things from the clay but it has to have something to make something. Heart creates; It creates art, creates poetry, creates music, creates dance, paintings, sculptures and so on. The heart creates from nothing. That’s what God does too; God creates something from nothing.
Gurbani is poetry. It is sung music and it makes our inside dance. All three things are associated with the heart. He says gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o; sing and listen while remaining immersed in Ishq. Please understand that. He says, sing His utterances, sing the divine’s song; divine’s song comes from our heart or Guru’s heart. Singing of the divine's song, hymns, can only happen at the heart. Mind can sing it too but that’s not singing. His songs spring out of the heart, they can be sung out of the heart, and the music arises out of the heart. Ishq is in the heart, in the hirdaa. So, He says to sing these love songs which I’m giving you, and then hear and remain drowned in ishq. Hear, means what? Please understand this. In the beginning it means to hear what is being sung. Later on, the meaning changes to hearing while remaining silent. When we become completely peaceful by continuously feeling the Divine at the heart area, then by remaining at the heart we would hear the Anhad Shabad.
He says sing these love songs. Then hear; keep hearing your sound while you are singing. Slowly you will become centered at the heart, and then while being totally still, stay at the heart and listen. You would hear the Celestial Music because God’s utterances, God’s music, God’s symphony can only be heard at the heart. Maharaj Ji says remain absorbed in feeling Him there.
How can we expect any change in us if we do not sit in meditation for a long time? Is it child’s play to transform the consciousness out of which we have been living for ages and ages? No! It is a play, but only for loving souls who know what ishq is. Not for those who are after lust and mind and all those; no peace can ever be felt there. I received a letter which was very disturbing. The writer does not do any meditation and says how come I don’t feel that bliss. Bliss is not outside, bliss is within.
He says remain absorbed in the truth. Human life is our only opportunity to transform this I centered consciousness into the divinely consciousness. So what does the Guru do? Guru brings us from our minds to our hearts. It’s the Guru, it is His songs; He is telling us how to hear the Celestial Music, and if we stay in that music we become so intoxicated that no intoxicant in the world can give that. But we have to do what He says. If someone says that it just sounds like shhhh, then it’s just shhhh. So please understand. The Guru brings us from our mind to our heart. He brings us at our heart, and centers us at our heart. He says, now stay here - speak while remaining here, sing while remaining here, hear while remaining here. He says don’t go upstairs. There the fire is waiting for you; the mind is waiting for you. Stay here. Here you are protected, you are with me.
Is it clear up to this point? That the Guru brings us from the mind to the heart, and makes us centered at the heart. He says do not move from here. If you move, I’m going to tell the police (laughter). The mind is the police, ready to get you.
So the transformation starts happening at the heart. Let us sing this line, singing to our true self, that oh my soul, I want to come to see you, but I’m not yet capable of appreciating your beauty. I’m not yet free from my mind to come to you.
Dhaarnaa:
mooNh hee ban-daa nahee ajay tainoo dikhaa-oun noo
dil tay kardaa bahot hee mayraa milnay aa-oun noo
ih maiN dee-aaN nee hushi-aaree-aaN
The cleverness of this false I has me broken down into pieces. I’m scattered into a million pieces. One piece of mine is with my parents, one piece of mine is with my spouse, one piece of mine is at work, one piece of mine is with my friends; so many pieces! The cleverness of my I has really got me.
maalo-maal haaN naal dushvaaree-aaN
Because of the cleverness of my false I, my house is full of worries, full of pains, full of insecurities. It is because of the grace of my false I, that I’m really rich in worries and pains; I’m really rich, my house is full.
rahiNdee haaN kardee jatan maiN, kivayN ud kay aaoun noo
Still I keep trying that somehow I can fly to you; I keep trying in spite of being in such a situation.
Dhaarnaa (end)
Maharaj Ji says:
dil darvaanee jo karay darvaysee dil raas
Maharaj Ji says whosoever keeps a watch over their heart, the Divine never leaves them. The one who keeps a watch over one’s heart, that it never becomes vacant of the Divine, their hearts become pure, holy, and they are called darvays. This is a very important thing to understand that the heart is the most important stage on the way to our true self or God. Heart is the most important; it’s not the destination; God or our true self does not dwell there; it is a point so important that here our consciousness starts becoming free of the I. At this point, the Divine separates us from our I-ness. I-ness cannot go beyond the heart. Heart can understand much deeper than the mind but still, the heart is not the destination. Heart is the stay for some time where we could be freed from the mind, but the journey continues. At this point we are made free of anger, greed, attachment, lust, all those things, and we start becoming peaceful, content. No more burning in the fire.
This path goes through the heart, and at the heart the I is halted. At the heart, the I is extinguished. Because this path goes through the heart, it’s called path of ishq. There is another path through the mind, but there you never get rid of the mind because it’s through the mind. Yogis’ path is the path of the mind. Yogis are those who came up with yoga; that is the path through the mind and you can never get rid of the mind. Hence, at the end, the journey remains incomplete. And the journey has no real oasis, or gardens of love, or fragrances of ishq and compassion; nothing like that! The path of the mind is a path through the desert.
Divine’s utterances came out of the heart, that’s why they are called love songs, songs of ishq. The journey continues beyond the heart too. On this path, we can speak up to the heart. The journey starts from the mind or from the blind well; it’s the same thing, blind well is connected to the mind up there. So, the journey starts from the mind. From the mind to the heart, words can be used but beyond the mind, you cannot talk, you cannot say what is there.
jay ha-o jaanaa aakhaa naahee kahnaa kathan na jaa-ee
He says:
jahaa bol tah achhar aavaa
Maharaj Ji says that you can use words to say something up to the heart.
jah abol tah man na rahaavaa
But the mind cannot exist beyond the heart, so beyond the heart no words can be used. You simply cannot speak. You go into such a deep region on this path.
bol abol maDh hai so-ee
Maharaj Ji says that at the heart there was God but beyond the heart there is God too, taking you to God’s house and to your true self’s house but you cannot talk there. You become speechless. Actually, even if you try you cannot talk.
jas oh hai tas lakhai na ko-ee
Beyond heart there is no mind; there is just God, and no words can be spoken, you become speechless. That’s why nobody can say how God is or what God is. He makes you speechless. He says I can show you but I cannot let you know. I cannot let you tell the world. This is going to remain between you and me. What a path! How truly God is, nobody can say it in words.
Come to the hirdaa, heart area please.
Dhaarnaa:
ik din vay maahee-aa mahifil tayree saaN aa baithee
Oh, my beloved Guru, one day I came wholeheartedly and sat down in your gathering. I was not roaming about; there were no thoughts; I was totally there in your gathering, and have been coming.
sadkay tayray aj vay chanaa, ghar ishkay day haaN baithee
It’s because of your grace that today I’m sitting in the house of ishq. Where is the house of ishq? Heart, hirdaa. It’s because of your grace that today I’m sitting in the house of ishq or the village of ishq.
We have to stop at the village of ishq while undertaking the journey to our true self and God.
