Let us become focused at the center of the eyebrows, and at the root of the nose.
Dhun meh Dhi-aan Dhi-aan meh jaani-aa gurmukh akath kahaanee.
Maharaj Ji says that when we focus then the Divine presence is felt in a particular rhythm, in a special direction.
kar majno sapat saray man nirmal mayray raam.
He says take bath (focus) at the seven sacred places - root of the spine, the root of the pubic bone, naval point, hirdaa heart area, the fifth one is at the throat, sixth in-between the eyebrows, and seventh at the top of the head, the tenth door.
Whomsoever God has inscribed, on their forehead that you would become absorbed in his ishq, only they become absorbed. It is a miracle that the Divine, the creator of this immense infinite universe, makes Himself feel us. Only He can do this miracle.
ko-ee jaanai kavan eehaa jag meet.
He says that only the rare fortunate ones get to know who is my true well-wisher, my true friend in this whole wide world.
All the schools, colleges, universities, the worldly institutions, prepare us to get jobs, to earn livelihood. They can prepare us how to get a job but they cannot tell us how to live human life. Maharaj Ji says it’s only the True Guru who is so concerned about you that you have been blessed with the rare opportunity, with the rare gift of human life, and it must not be wasted.
jis ho-ay kirpaal so-ee biDh boojhai taa kee nirmal reet.
Whomsoever God becomes merciful to, He guides them how to live life.
taa kee nirmal reet.
He says that they have pure thoughts, their way of life is pure. We will talk about it, what’s the pure way of life.
Every word uttered by Maharaj Ji is a treasure house of true knowledge and imparts the highest understanding of life. Nothing is more important than to receive the true knowledge and higher understanding of life, and the Guru grants us this. True knowledge can be verified through a meditative way of life. It is the highest understanding; understanding that cannot be improved upon. In the world, there’s no chance to grow. The growth happens here, only on this path of truth. Growth cannot just happen anywhere. Our consciousness cannot automatically start understanding the higher truths. What we understood by the same words of Maharaj Ji, today we understand something totally new. Why? Because we are growing; our capacity to understand His utterances is growing. We must all please take this true knowledge and higher understanding from the True Guru, and also make sure that our children are granted that wisdom too.
Maharaj Ji is telling us how your life becomes by walking the path of ishq, and how it is going to influence our future journey beyond this life.
Yesterday we saw that Maharaj Ji said:
ha-o sancha-o ha-o khaattaa saglee avaDh bihaanee. Rahaa-o.
ji-o uljhaa-i-o baaDh buDh kaa marti-aa nahee bisraanee. ||4||
Maharaj ji says if you don’t undertake a spiritual way of life, if you don’t bring God into your life, then your consciousness is not going to be of any valuable potential. It’s going to remain worldly. You would be empty of true knowledge. You would be empty of true wisdom.
bhaa-ee meet banDhap sakhay paachhay tinhoo ka-o sampaanee.
None of your relatives, your family, your friends, your well wishers, can influence your future journeys. Only the Guru can.
jit laago man baasnaa ant saa-ee paragtaanee.
He says that you would be taken out of the body with your last breath, and that last breath is going to dictate your future journey; your last thought, your last desire while leaving the body. Maharaj ji is going to see what was your last thought, what was your last desire.
If we look at life in this light then life seems like a gamble. That somebody can do bad deeds all his life, and then at the last breath he can have a very noble thought and win, and vice versa too. It doesn’t seem fair.
However, it is not so. It is impossible that if someone has been a noble person all his life, and at the last breath, he can have an evil thought. It’s impossible. He says in Japji Sahib:
kar kar karnaa likh lai jaahu
He says whatever we do repeatedly in our lives becomes engraved on our consciousness, and without fail, that is going to be the last thought.
aapay beej aapay hee khaahu.
Please understand this. He says that your very last thought, your very last desire, is going to be the seed of the tree of your next life. It’s very dangerous. Life is a very risky business, and we cannot escape the rules of the Divine.
There is a letter that I received. This writer says that my father passed away recently and he never walked this path. After his departure, I have been thinking what will happen to him? Would he come back into our family? The question is that my brother has just got married, and my father loved my brother; would my father come back as a child of my brother? I would very much want that.
Out of ignorance we ask for the wrong thing, and we remain ignorant as long as we remain in the schools of the world. Betay, thank you for writing but we should not ask for that. First of all, that decision has already been made. Secondly, we should only ask Maharaj Ji for peace to his soul.
Going back to the importance of the last thought: The last thought, the last desire, is going to be the seed for the tree of life for the next journey. When we reach a certain age, that last thought is then going to become the first thought.
da-i-aal purakh kirpaa karahu naanak daas dasaanee.
At the end of this hymn, after telling this law of the cycle of birth and death, Maharaj Ji asks us to pray to God that please make me the worshiper of your worshippers. Please make me a servant of your holy congregation so that I can serve them, I can lose my ego, and I can reach the state where my last thought would be about you.
We must remain awake from this very moment. It simply cannot happen at the last moment. We should take this moment as our last moment and see what thought would come to me. So, if we are called back today, we can know where we are going to be next.
chhadaa-ay lee-o mahaa balee tay apnay charan paraat.
Oh, my Beloved, please take me out of the clutches of my mind, my ego; my ego, who judges others, who tests others. We are not to judge others, it’s God’s duty. We have to judge ourselves.
Maharaj Ji says the mind is the mightiest in this world, and the only one mightier than the mind is Guru or God. Only He can save us from our mind.
apnay charan paraat
Oh, my Beloved Lord, please kindly reveal yourself to me, so that I can catch hold of your Lotus Feet. I remain in your refuge to remain free of myself.
Dhaarnaa:
naal aa-oun tayray ishq havaavaaN, vay dil baagay aa sajanaa
vay deed baajh naa ibaadat hovay
I want to worship you, but how can I worship you without having beheld you.
safar saahaaN daa hor naa hovay
I cannot keep breathing like this. I cannot keep living like this.
labhday rahin tainoo saaree-aaN dishaavaaN
When my breath goes within, it keeps looking for you in all directions.
vaykhaaN saaHmanay tay charnee charhaavaaN
If I see you right before me, if I feel you right within me, then I would offer every breath as my worship to you.
vay dil baagay aa sajanaa
naal aa-oun tayray ishq havaavaaN, vay dil baagay aa sajanaa
Oh, my Beloved, kindly come to the garden of my heart. That’s the abode of ishq, and when you come there, with you come the winds of ishq.
Dhaarnaa (end)
kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.
hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal. ||1||
When we walk this path then we start knowing, as He reveals to us, the rules of the Divine; the rules by which he governs His creation. And by knowing those rules, we become wiser.
Two things we learn from in the world. One is the hard times; hard times leave us with some precious lessons. Second is our enemies or opposition. We shouldn’t have any enemies because we love everyone. Even in the political system, if the opposition is strong, then the government has to walk diligently; they have to be careful; they have to act more wisely. So we learn from hard times and opposition. But still the highest wisdom can only be granted by our Beloved, and we must receive that from Him, and make sure that our children receive that as well. It’s such a breath of fresh air, so encouraging to see that at least fifty percent of the sangat here in England are youth. I bow my head to their parents, and I am thankful to them. And to you too betay because you listen to them.
A sangat from Vernon, a small town in BC, wrote a couple lines in this letter.
haal-ay-ishq kis ko sunaa-ayN aap kay hotay hu-ay
Maharaj Ji says:
dookh tisai peh aakhee-ahi sookh jisai hee paas. ||3||
Maharaj Ji says we should only open our bag of pains only before that being who can give us peace and bliss, and only God can do that. He says, don’t show your wounds, your pains, your hurts to everybody; they cannot do anything. They can only sympathize, but sympathy makes us weak. Only weak people seek sympathy, because it gives them some support. Brave people don’t seek sympathy; they act, they walk!
The writer has written a couple lines:
haal-ay-ishq kis ko sunaa-ayN aap kay hotay hu-ay
Oh my Beloved, when you are there, why should I tell the state of my being to anybody else.
Why go to any other door when your door is there for me.
This is how our faith should be in Him. This is how our relationship should be with Him.
Now we know how slippery the walk of life is. Maharaj Ji says that in order to be successful, you must have fear of losing the game. If you don’t have fear of losing the game, then it’s going to be difficult.
charh naav sant uDhaar.
Maharaj Ji says climb aboard the boat of the saints, they would liberate you from your own self. The boat of the saints is the holy congregation.
bhai taray saagar paar.
He says that boat will take you to the land of the Divine. But you must remain in fear of losing the game of life because it’s not some small loss. It’s a question of human life; an opportunity given by Him to be transformed from mortal to immortal - I don’t want to remain mortal and in the cycle of birth and death. Fear must be there! It’s the fear that is going to keep us in line.
Even in the worldy schools and colleges, there is a fear of failing. The more fearful you are, the more you are going to work hard.
Maharaj Ji calls the Celestial Music, the wine of truth. Let’s hear it please.
Dhaarnaa:
do ghut mad day pi-aa vay babalaa, do ghut mad day pi-aa
Oh my beloved, Divinely father, kindly give me a couple of sips of the wine of truth - the Celestial Music.
mayree-aaN sab hushi-aaree-aaN lai lao
Kindly take all my cleverness; it’s my cleverness which is the cause of this state of mine; my self destruction.
day dil day pind vasaa, vay babalaa, do ghut mad day pi-aa
Please take all my cleverness away from me and make me dwell in the city of ishq, upstairs. Please take me upstairs and make me dwell with my Beloved.
