ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Ji, Maharaj Ji teaches us daily discipline, how to keep ourselves in discipline – wake up during Amrit Vela and go to Asa Di Vaar deewan. If that is not possible, then sit in meditation during Amrit Vela, do Nitnem (recite daily prayers) during the day, keep feeling the Divine presence within during the day again and again, and recite Rehras Sahib in the evening. Gradually, our consciousness starts to come within.
Maharaj ji says…
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਲੇਹ ॥
mayray man naam nit nit layh.
Meditate everyday, and once we become the master of our daily discipline, we gain mastery over our lives.
Daughter of mine, who asked about how to open the heart; Betay (dear child), it starts with listening. These ears are not capable of listening to the Divine utterances. They are meant for worldly life. To hear the Divine’s utterances, it is the hirdaa, at the heart area. When we focus our consciousness there, then every word strikes us.
Please become focused, either at the heart area or at the point in between the eyebrows at the root of the nose.
This son of mine writes that during the very first deewan here in France, you were singing:
aad sach jugaad sach.
hai bhee sach naanak hosee bhee sach.
Then, suddenly you asked the congregation: Ji, did you hear this, that there’s only God? Silently, I said, yes, I have heard it. Then you said: have you heard that we are not? At that moment, it became very clear to me that I did not hear that I am not.
The person says that when you said there’s only God, I heard it, and when you said we are not, that did not sink in. Please understand. He’s saying that I heard that there’s only God but this does not become heard to me that I am not. This is strange! Now the person is thinking that he heard that there’s only God. Had he heard that there’s only God, then would it not mean that I am not? So please see, nothing gets heard by us, nothing! I talked for at least two full years about hearing, listening; how to listen. Two full years! How can this happen?
We must understand. What this person is actually saying is that when you said that Maharaj Ji says that there’s only God, I hear it. But when He says, you are not, then I don’t hear it. The person is actually saying that when Maharaj Ji says you are not, that I don’t understand. It’s not that I didn’t hear it, I did not understand it. And please remember hearing has nothing to do with understanding. Listening to God has nothing to do with understanding.
In a worldly conversation, the mind keeps thinking what it is going to say next while it is listening. But in order to hear the Divine, the entire consciousness is involved in listening. When the entire consciousness is involved in listening, how can there be any room for understanding or not? Our entire consciousness becomes peaceful and still after meditating for a long time. The peaceful, still consciousness cannot think; it can only feel. So, when Maharaj Ji says something, our consciousness absorbs it; it doesn’t think.
One time, someone asked Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, how is a Brahm Gianee? Maharaj Ji asked someone to call Bhai Kaur Singh Ji. Maharaj Ji placed a plate full of salt in front of him and said: Bhai Sahib, please eat. He started eating fistfuls of salt. After a while, Maharaj Ji said, you are full now, and Kaur Singh Ji stopped. Maharaj Ji said, this is how a Brahm Gianee is. To the world, that person would seem devoid of any senses. What can the world understand! Brahm Gianee is in the hukam of Divine. He doesn’t think that I am not full yet, I have to eat salt only. No!
In order to listen to the Divine, 100% of our consciousness is needed to listen. No part of our consciousness is lent to thinking. That’s the worldly talk; we listen and think at the same time. But here, through meditation we become totally peaceful, still; all of our consciousness becomes stationed within and does not go out. That state is beyond thinking. With thinking, one can understand to some extent. But in that state if somebody says it’s all God, you recognize that it’s all God because your consciousness is fully available to what is being said. But you cannot be fooled. If somebody says it’s all people, that won’t sink in because that pure consciousness knows that this is not the truth. So please, there is no shortcut. In order to become capable of hearing Him, we have to become totally present in the moment, and that happens through meditation. Becoming capable of listening is the very first step on this path of love. The very first step is listening! When He says it’s all God, then after meditating for a long time, we reach a state where there are no limits of the body for the consciousness; it’s just Divine light starting from the bottom all the way up in the skies; that’s when you realize it's all God. Unless that happens, we do not not accept that it’s all God.
Accepting happens after listening. It is very clear, scientific. First, Maharaj Ji utters four stanzas about listening, and after that, four stanzas about accepting what is said; accepting fully, without thinking. So if someone says that you are God; not that you are God, but rather that it’s not you. There are many amongst us who can listen; their consciousness is still. Those who have meditated a lot and brought all their consciousness within will listen. Their consciousness does not go out. That’s when you realize what a blessing life is. Then you don’t need anyone’s company, no need to talk to anyone, minimal food, minimal sleep – you are complete within yourself.
It is very difficult to reach that stage. It starts with listening to the heartbeat, that’s the easiest way. Keep sitting for a long time, and keep reciting Waheguru Waheguru Waheguru with every heartbeat. Then, after some time, this thing would start setting in that He is, and He is alive. He is the one who is beating this heart. This is where the story starts that God is. Then meditating, staying in the street of the present, the Divine reveals Himself and then gradually you turn out to be just Divine light and that’s the end of the story. We must become very serious. When we wake up in the morning, this is the first thing that should be in our consciousness.
Then, the writer says that I have been stuck at that point since then that it is heard to some extent that God is, everything is God, but it doesn’t get heard that I am not. Do we understand now that even that did not get heard. Nothing is heard. We did this in so much depth for so many years and it had to be repeated again today. It’s so easy. Once you learn to listen to the heartbeat, you would listen to the heartbeat, or feel the heartbeat in your ears. The doctors have to use the stethoscope. You don’t have to use anything. You would be able to feel the heartbeat in your ears.

I wrote a letter to you when you are small, and today I am writing another letter to you now that you have grown up.
ਸੁਣਨ ਦਾ ਦਰ ਮਿਲੇ….ਰੂਹ ਦਾ ਰੱਬੀ ਘਰ ਮਿਲੇ……ਹੱਥ ਜੋੜ ਜੋੜ ਕਰ ਨੀ ਦੁਆ
sunan daa dar milay……rooh daa rabee ghar milay……hath jorh jorh kar nee du-aa
Please keep both your hands folded before the Divine and beg Him that you become capable of listening to Him. The vibrations of His sound hit us at the heart area, at the hirdaa; that gets heard, only that gets heard.

When we become capable of listening, then you would love to listen to Gurbani constantly. And gradually in meditation, you would become peaceful. When we become totally silent with meditation, we start seeing that this thing that I called me, is Divine light wrapped within the human body. The human body is wrapping the Divine light and that’s to be discovered through meditation. Slowly and slowly, in meditation, you start losing your consciousness about your body, and you start seeing that it’s all Divine light; all Divine light, starting from the ground through the street of love, right into the skies and beyond. That’s when you become convinced that it is God. Everybody is God Himself.
Then you recognize that this Divine light is; there has never been me, it has always been the Divine light, but I was asleep. I was entangled in the outside world, I had no knowledge about the inner world, about the truth of life.
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਗਏ ਮਸਕਤਿ ਘਾਲਿ ॥
jinee naam Dhi-aa-i-aa ga-ay maskat ghaal.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇ ਮੁਖ ਉਜਲੇ ਕੇਤੀ ਛੁਟੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
naanak tay mukh ujlay kaytee chhutee naal.
After a lot of effort; it doesn’t just happen like that. Then God recognizes those efforts, and then many others are freed along with you.

He shows us that it is just pure Divine light and the Divine music. So please when we sit in meditation, feel the Divine light within. Feel the light where you are sitting, feel the presence of milky white light there. Once we become capable of hearing, then we can start feeling the Divine light in meditation, that where we are sitting it’s Divine light and then that Divine light becomes stronger and stronger and stronger. And one day it’s so strong that when you are feeling that you cannot open your eyes, it’s so dazzling. Once you recognize yourself that you are the Divine light; it’s so strong
Maharaj Ji says that Divine light is like millions of suns combined. Imagine that! That burns your ego. Ego says, I am. Then there is nobody to claim I am, and nobody to claim it’s God. Would God say, I’m God? No!
ਜਿਨਿ ਏਹਿ ਲਿਖੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥

Then Maharaj Ji says no words can explain that state.

ਐਸੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਭੂਲਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
aisay kaahay bhool paray.
Why do you look so poor, so helpless? You don’t know who you are, how did this happen to you?
He says I’m talking to you, I’m asking you. You, who look empty, who look scared of tomorrow, who look worried, tense, how come? You don’t know who you are, that’s why you are scared, that’s why you are frightened. You are in fact fearless!
ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਪਰਾਨੀ ਭਰਮ ਗੁਬਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਰੇ ॥
anDh koop meh pari-o paraanee bharam gubaar moh banDh paray.
When our consciousness is scattered outside, it is centered on the pubic bone. Maharaj calls it the blind well.
ਭਰਮ ਗੁਬਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਬੰਧਿ ਪਰੇ ॥

Maharaj Ji says when we become attached to others, to other people, to other things, to other places, then we create a jail for ourselves, and our consciousness falls down to the pubic bone. That’s where the darkest place, the blind well, is.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹੋਤ ਦਇਆਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਕਾਢੈ ਬਾਹ ਫਰੇ ॥
kaho naanak parabh hot da-i-aaraa gur bhaytai kaadhai baah faray.
Mahraj Ji says when the Divine becomes merciful to you because you want to, you ache to know the truth, then the Divine becomes merciful to you, He makes the true Guru meet you. Then the true Guru pulls you out of the blind well by holding your hand. So, when we become focused at the pubic bone and do meditation there, keeping Waheguru shabad in our consciousness, He takes our consciousness up from that point and makes it rise upward.
ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਕਾਢੈ ਬਾਹ ਫਰੇ ॥

ਪਿਆਸੀ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਰੂਹ ਮੇਰੀ…..ਰੁੱਖੀ ਸੁੱਕੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਚ’....ਲੱਭਣ ਆਈ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਸਉਣ
pi-aasee pi-aasee rooH mayree……rukhee sukee dunee-aa ch……labhan aa-ee kiHrhaa soun
My soul is so thirsty and this world is so dry. I don’t know what type of rainy season my soul is looking for in this dry world.
ਆਸੇ ਜਿਹੇ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ…..ਸਿਆਣਦੀ ਮੁੜੰਗੇ ਫਿਰਾਂ……ਖੌਰੇ….ਆਸੇ ਪਾਸੇ ਉਹ ਹੀ ਹੋਣਾ
aasay jihay nainaaN naal….si-aaNdee murhaNgay firaaN…..khouray aasay paasay o hee honaa
She’s looking for her beloved, she is looking everywhere. Is this Him? Is this Him? Is this Him?
ਨੈਣੋਂ ਡਿੱਗੇ ਹੰਝੂਆਂ ਨੂੰ..... ਹੌਕੇ ਅੱਜ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੁਣੇ....ਸੌਖਾ ਨਹੀਓ ਸੱਜਣਾ ਦਾ ਪਾਉਣ

Today tears were falling from my eyes and there were deep sighs within. I heard the sighs talking to my tears; the sighs were saying to my tears that it’s not easy to meet the Beloved.
So please, it requires commitment, it requires love.
