Maharaj Ji tells us that a man; man or woman, these are just our robes. Under those robes, we all are the souls, consciousness. He says that man enters into this world asleep. Nobody can have knowledge that when the birth took place, what was that experience. We don’t know; nobody can ever know because God does not let that be written on a sleeping person’s consciousness. When we leave our bodies, when death happens, then God withdraws our consciousness to some mysterious place and we become totally unconscious when He withdraws our soul or consciousness outside of our bodies. So, we cannot have any knowledge of when we enter into this world, nor when we leave this world. In sleep, we laugh at others or make fun of some people or slander others; because we are asleep. In sleep, you can’t feel the pain of others. We do it because we don’t know the person we are laughing at, what type of tacks are in his shoes which hurt him at every step of his journey of life. Only he knows; those are hidden from us, we cannot feel that. If the burden he is carrying on his back, if that burden was placed on my back, I might stumble too. An awakened person’s way of looking, understanding, talking, hearing; his behavior is totally authentic and real.
The other day when we were driving from France to Germany, on the way there is a place where we stop every year for a break. There, I sat at a table where my sons were sitting, and I asked my son Anil from Stuttgart, Germany, to sing something. I thought he would sing in Deutsche, and I was ready to just enjoy the rhythm of his sound knowing that I’m not going to understand anything in Deutsche, but when he started singing, that singing was so peace giving, so stilling, so sweet to your inside, that I attentively started listening. He was singing the line of Gurbani:
ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਰਾਖਾ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ਤਾ ਭਉ ਕੇਹਾ ਕਾੜਾ ਜੀਉ ॥
tooN mayraa raakhaa sabhnee thaa-ee taa bha-o kayhaa kaarhaa jee-o.
Oh, my beloved, You are my protector everywhere, then how can I have any fear or any anxiety.
Maharaj Ji says that many people get to hear in their lives that our true home is within but they never really reach their true home and never live their lives while living their true homes. He says the reason is fear and anxiety. If we can hear it, He says, the reason is fear and anxiety; fear that I’m going to lose my husband, my wife, my friends, this freedom, this world of mine outside, I’m going to lose this! This fear brings anxiety. Many times we become focused and go within for a short time and then suddenly we run outside out of that fear. But we do not know it was that fear that pulled us out. What a beautiful thing! What a secret! Rare people know this secret; rarest of the rare. This is the reason we do not, really deep within, long to reach our true homes.
We never lived in our true homes within, so what do we feel qualifies us to decide that this world is better? That I’m going to lose this and that. The problem is we try to figure that out intellectually. We are fearful because we listen to our foolish mind and life is wasted.
We have never experienced living within and we try to figure that out intellectually. How can we figure that out intellectually? Just look at the folly, at our silliness! The other day I was sitting with my young children and one of them said that we feel we have a lot of time on our hands, there is no urgency. We have a lot of time on our hands, so let us remain in worry, stress, anxiety, anger, and all that, so there is no urgency to become peaceful. Does it make sense? Think about it! Because we figured that out intellectually; I have lots of time! Even the people who think they have reached somewhere, they stop, because they think that now they know the destination and can reach there anytime. They never do! They are fooling themselves. It’s either now or never!
ab na bhajas bhajas kab bhaa-ee.
He says if you don’t sing His glories today, if you don’t make efforts to go home today, what makes you believe that you are going to do it tomorrow? What makes you believe that? Tomorrow will come but you will be you.
tooN mayraa raakhaa sabhnee thaa-ee taa bha-o kayhaa kaarhaa jee-o.

You are my father, you are mother. It’s the Divine who created us. We did not create ourselves. No person can create children. Some people; God has made them that way; they are going to all types of doctors so that they can have babies. Can doctors create babies? Can a doctor create consciousness? That’s business, it’s happening in a state of sleep.
You are my father, You are mother. Think about it, if we hear it, can we remain afraid, stressed, worried, anxious? That He is my father and mother, and He is worried about me. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says:
naanak chintaa mat karahu chintaa tis hee hay-ay.
He says, oh my dear ones, do not worry, I worry for you. God is saying, you do not worry, I’m worrying for you. But we do not listen, and even if we listen it’s at such a superficial level that the moment we walk out of that door we would remember nothing and we are left with the same anxiety.
Life is passing by us, calling us to wake up, but we remain engrossed in our dreams. What we are experiencing outside, is a dream world.
tooN mayraa pitaa tooNhai mayraa maataa.
tooN mayraa banDhap tooN mayraa bharaataa.
It’s a tested fact that if two brothers are fighting in the same war, and both are attacked, then one brother would try to save the other before he saves himself. Maharaj Ji says, He’s my brother, He’s all my relatives, He’s my father, He’s my mother. These are not empty words or imagination; this is how our relationship becomes with Him. We run to Him, we address Him and ask Him - help me, save me.
tooN mayraa raakhaa sabhnee thaa-ee taa bha-o kayhaa kaarhaa jee-o.
You are my protector everywhere. Wherever I go, You go with me, You never leave me alone even for a second. Even then, I worry about myself, I don’t trust You. Because I’m very intelligent, I have double masters’ degrees. I don’t think You ever went to school. Yesterday, I received a letter from a daughter of mine in America, and it was written that I always feel I’m more intelligent than others, I’m well read. I’m not going to be one of them. What is this? All ego! I sent a message to her. I said, my darling daughter, it’s very difficult to be one of them, they are the Divine. It’s very difficult to be one of them.
We do not listen. We don’t know the secret of listening to the utterances of the Divine. These ears which are attached to our head outside, are only to capture the words from outside. But these words are coming from inside so there is no way that His utterances can be heard with these ears.
A daughter of mine from Belgium, Celine, was visiting today and she asked, what is meditation? Betay (dear child), meditation is the process of going within, and finding our true home. We don’t have any home outside. Home means where we can relax, where we feel secure. Our consciousness is always wandering everywhere. If it had a home outside then would it do that? We cannot have any home outside, that’s why we cannot relax, that’s why we cannot become fearless. Within is the place of fearlessness. Nobody can enter within.
We do not hear.
Once we become capable of listening with most attentiveness and alertness, nothing worldly would touch you. No worldly talk can ever touch you. Only the talk about Him or His utterances would be heard, nothing else. Guru Nanak Dev Ji uttered four stanzas about listening (suni-ai), out of thirty nine stanzas of Japji sahib, which explains how the whole thing came into being, and how it is run by God, the different stages of meditation and merging into God, and all of that. Out of thirty nine stanzas, four stanzas are about listening.
Oh my mother, I don’t know what’s in the word suni-ai (listening). He says if you can hear me, you would realize you are God; not that God who says, let me become God and then I’ll show you! (Baba Ji laughs) No, no! The God in whom we are sitting. We are sitting inside God; the space is nothing but the expanse of God, and He is so polite, so gentle, so tender that we cannot even feel His presence. So egoless! He has no ego to make us feel Him.
Dhaarnaa:

Oh my mother, I don’t know what’s there in this word suni-ai (listening), when He says it. It has stolen my heart. This word has run away with my heart.
haran means to run away with or to steal.

If anybody gets to hear Him saying, oh my dear, can you hear me. If anybody hears Him saying this - can you hear me, and I have heard that if that person hears Him, God becomes the watchman for that person, God does not let the mind come near that person. Mind is stress, anxiety, anger, fear, greed, attachment, all that.
Please, new sangat, we should practice listening to our heartbeat while sitting silently. With closed eyes, feel the heartbeat because God’s utterances can only be heard by the heart area, by the hirdaa, not with these ears. So if we practice becoming aware about our heartbeat, then we can establish a contact with our heart area, the hirdaa.

Oh my dear friend, you have come into this world, and I want to tell you the truth about this world. The truth is that you are given a limited time to stay on this planet called Earth.
Oh my dear friend, you are still young and believe that you have unlimited time to stay here. Give me your ear and listen - you have a very limited time to stay here; very limited time! Secondly, whatever you are seeing outside is a false show. This is a false show outside. False means which is not permanent, it’s transitory. One is a baby, that is a transitory state. Then teenage years, transitory state; youth, transitory state; middle age, transitory state; old age, transitory state; death, permanent state, that is the truth! So, remember that what you are seeing is a temporary show, just like a movie. Maharaj Ji calls it a movie.
barahm gi-aanee mil karahu beechaaraa ih ta-o chalat bha-i-aa.
Maharaj Ji says it’s a movie outside. What happens in a movie? The movie is constant, the roles are constantly changing. One is playing roles, one after the other. It’s exactly the same outside, it’s a movie!
sachaa ghar sachrhai sayvee-ai sach kharaa sachi-aarovaa.
Don’t make a permanent house in this world. Nobody can make a permanent house in this world. Your permanent house is within you; your permanent house is in the presence of your Creator. The Creator cannot die, neither can you. That’s where you can have your permanent house. That’s where you can become immortal, not outside.
What’s the need to go within and live in a peaceful house? I have a lot of time to do that. Why can’t I suffer in the meantime. Why are you taking this option away? (Baba Ji laughs)
sachaa ghar sachrhai sayvee-ai sach kharaa sachi-aarovaa.
You can obtain your true home by having true love with the Creator, with the Truth. You can reach your true home by having ishq for the true one, for the true one.
sachaa ghar sachrhai sayvee-ai sach kharaa sachi-aarovaa.
The real truth is realized by becoming truly truthful. These are seven words. In seven little words, Maharaj Ji says you can realize your true home by having ishq for the true one, and the true one can be attained by becoming truly truthful. How beautiful! Are we truthful now or false? (Baba Ji asks the sangat). And we don’t want to become truthful. Think about it, please! The youth who think that they know better than their elders because elders are old fashioned and we have the new intelligence.
The answer to the question of my daughter, Celine: Meditation is the process of becoming totally, truly truthful, realizing our Creator, and finding that my true home is here in His presence. This is meditation. If we want to reach that home where we can relax and enjoy the play which is being played outside, then it’s for us. If we want to wake up and not accept sufferings, miseries, stress, then this is for us. If we want to live forever, never die, then this is for us. If we want to live in bliss and in ishq forever, then this is for us.
Dhaarnaa:
vay dil baageeN aa sajnaa
Oh, my beloved, come at my heart area, I have heard that’s where you receive those who start walking towards you. So please come at my heart area. I’m here, I’m focused here.
Oh, my beloved, you haven’t come yet?
What? I am not there completely?
Please have mercy on me so that I may come there completely.
