ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Dhan uh pareet charan sang laagee.
ਭੋਰ ਭਰਮ ਕਾਟੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਵਤ ਜਾਗੀ ॥੧॥
bhor bharam kaatay parabh simrat gi-aan anjan mil sovat jaagee. ||1||
Maharaj Ji says it’s all illusion - I am this, my name is this, my family is this, my education is this, my business is this - it is all illusion, you are doing it in sleep.
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਤੇਰੋ ਕੋਇ ਨਹੀ ਖਿੰਚਿ ਲੇਇ ਜਿਨਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥
ray man tayro ko-ay nahee khinch lay-ay jin bhaar.
Maharaj Ji says there is no person, place, or thing here that can be yours. Everything belongs to the one who created it, and He created you as well. You believe that this body is yours but if it was yours then it would go with you, right ? It stays along with us because He has given it to carry out a very important task.
gi-aan anjan mil sovat jaagee
The Divine becomes corallium for the eye of your consciousness. When the Divine touches you, He puts the corallium in your consciousness. Now when this consciousness opens its eyes, the look is different, the understanding is different.
Jit jit laavho tit tit laagay
Ji, yesterday someone was sharing about another wise person who has Guru Granth Sahib Ji at home and says that he does not need sangat. This is an illusion. It is His law that He won’t meet without sangat. But this is also karma that one hears and the other doesn’t. To some He is standing right in front but they don’t see it, and others recognize Him from far away.
bhor bharam kaatay parabh simrat
Bhor means daylight. Maharaj Ji says you used to think that you know everything. You thought it was daylight, I am not asleep, I worked hard to build all of these things.
Life is so mysterious that we cannot know anything about it. We are a part of His creation. He drew oaNkaar along with the ik (one) - ੴ - that this is all His creation, it is one piece and cannot be separated. Notice the shape of the oaNkaar, He kept the oorhaa open ( ੴ ) signifying that the creation will continue - the process of creation and destruction will happen again and again.
Dhaarnaa:
ਉੱਠੋ ਵੇ ਰੱਬੋਂ, ਵਤਨ ਸੰਭਾਲੋ, ਕੀਤੀ ਜੇ ਦੇਰੀ ਕਿਉਂ
ਲਾਲ ਜੀ, ਕੀਤੀ ਜੇ ਦੇਰੀ ਕਿਉਂ
utho vay rabboN, vatan sambhaalo, keetee jay dayree kioN
laal jee, keetee jay dayree kioN
We have no control over the outside world. There is another world within us - He says this is your world. Maharaj Ji says if you can rule yourself, if you don’t let the five robbers rule you, then you will rule the world - man jeetai jag jeet.
ਉੱਠੋ ਵੇ ਮੇਰਿਉਂ, ਸੁੱਤਿਉਂਂ ਰੱਬੋਂ ਕੋਈ, ਗਲੀਆਂ ਚ ਹੋਕਾ ਲਾਵੇ
utho vay mayri-oN, suti-oN rabboN koi, gali-aaN ch hokaa laavay
ਕਿੱਥੇ ਨੇ ਆਸਨ, ਮਹਿਬੂਬਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ, ਕਿੱਥੇ ਨੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਬੁਲਾਵੇ
kithay nay aasan, mihboobaaN vaalay, kithay nay piaar bulaavay
Where are those seats of yours where you were to sit in His love, waiting for Him, calling Him lovingly.
ਕਿੱਥੇ ਨੇ ਦਿਲ ਜੋ, ਡੁੱਬ ਡੁੱਬ ਜਾਵੇ, ਕਿੱਥੇ ਨੇ ਹੌਕੇ ਹਾਵੇ
kithay nay dil jo, dub dub jaavay, kithay nay houkay haavay
Where is the heart that sings in His absence, that sings when it feels that it is not connected to God, where are those deep sighs and regrets.
ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਖੁੱਦ ਦਾ, ਚੇਤਾ ਆਇਆ, ਰਾਜ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਨਾ ਕਿਉਂ
kioN naa khud daa, chaytaa aa-i-aa, raaj sambhaali-aa naa kioN
How come it never crossed your mind to know that who I am
Maharaj Ji says:
ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਲਤੇ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਗਏ ਦੇਹੀ ਕੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਹਤੇ ॥
baabaa boltay tay kahaa ga-ay dayhee kay sang rahtay.
Who was he, whom people say that he is dead now. But his body is here. Who was he, really ?
The first question in the very first Pauri of Japji Sahib is, how to destroy the delusion and become the authentic me.
ਕਿਉਂ ਨਾ ਖੁੱਦ ਦਾ, ਚੇਤਾ ਆਇਆ, ਰਾਜ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਨਾ ਕਿਉਂ
kioN naa khud daa, chaytaa aa-i-aa, raaj sambhaali-aa naa kioN
Lust, anger, greed, pride, attachment ruled over me. They came and went as they liked, I could not do anything. I had no control over my inner world which was supposed to be in my control.
ਰਾਜ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਨਾ ਕਿਉਂ
ਲਾਲ ਜੀ, ਰਾਜ ਸੰਭਾਲਿਆ ਨਾ ਕਿਉਂ
raaj sambhaali-aa naa kioN
laal jee, raaj sambhaali-aa naa kioN
Oh, my precious jewel, why didn’t you recognize the truth!
ਕੀਤੀ ਜੇ ਦੇਰੀ ਕਿਉਂ
ਲਾਲ ਜੀ, ਕੀਤੀ ਜੇ ਦੇਰੀ ਕਿਉਂ

Ji, please stay focused.
From the beginning, we are taught to go to school, it’s time to get settled, get married, buy a house. The language used is so misleading, e.g. words like settled and so forth. We have learnt these things from the world, it did not come from within. In the outside world, we may say that I can become a doctor, astronomer and so forth but to announce to the world that I am going to realize my true self, it requires the biggest courage. It may seem like we can do this anytime but it takes a rare one to announce that. It requires courage, because it requires the confidence that I can beat my mind, and the mind will always make you doubt. The mind’s job is to make you doubt. Even the person who wants to become the president, his or her mind will create doubt. But there is no room for doubt in our true self. So, we should beg Him for that courage. The mind is very powerful, we cannot do this by ourselves, beg to Maharaj Ji for His help, do ardaas from the heart. Then words are not needed for that ardaas, it’s from within.
The dream of realizing the true self must sit with us, stand with us, walk with us, sleep with us, rise with us; to remain in that world wondering, how is my true self, my authentic self.
Dhaarnaa:
ਨੀ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਤ ਤੇਰੀ, ਬਣਾਈ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ
nee maiN moorat tayree, banaa-ee raat noo
I made the picture of my true self last night.
ਉਹਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਵੇਖ ਨੀਂਦ ਨਾ, ਆਈ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ
ohnoo vaykh vaykh neeNd naa, aa-ee raat noo
The picture was so mysteriously beautiful, I kept looking at it, I couldn’t sleep at night.
ਰਹੀ ਟੇਕਦੀ ਮੱਥੇ ਇਲਾਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਨੂੰ
rahee taykdee mathay ilahee jaat noo
And I kept begging and bowing before the Divine, begging Him to make me realize the true self.
ਨੀ ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ
nee maiN moorat tayree, banaa-ee raat noo
Ji, we have been talking about how we do not remain the same when we are not in sangat. In Surrey, we will see why that is the case, and we will find how we can maintain that state.
Two things we should do everyday. Please make notes of Khajana Darshan or if we develop an understanding of any line of Gurbani. The other is to develop a habit of reading. Reading good books will immediately take us into sunn - a state of peace and stillness. We will see in the coming days how the uttered words and written words change our consciousness.
Dhaarnaa:
ਨੀ ਮਾਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀ ਕਰਦਾ, ਗ਼ਮ ਕੁਲ ਸਖੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪੀ ਜਾਵਾਂ
nee maa-ay mayraa jee kardaa, gam kul sakhee-aaN day pee jaavaaN
ਨੀ ਨੈਨ ਜੋ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਨੀਰ ਹਲੇਮੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਵਾਂ
nee nain jo sakhat ho ga-ay, neer halaymee-aaN daa ohnaa noo pi-aavaaN
Those eyes whose look has become hard, I want to make them drink the water of humility so that those eyes can become humble.
ਨੀ ਬੇਰੰਗ ਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ, ਰੰਗ ਮਹਿਬੂਬ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਰੰਗਾਵਾਂ
nee bayrang jihee-aaN zindagee-aaN noo, rang mehboob day naal raNgaavaaN
And those lives who have become loveless, from where the love has disappeared, I want to make them imbued with the love of the divine.
ਨੀ ਮਾਏ ਮੇਰਾ ਜੀ ਕਰਦਾ
nee maa-ay mayraa jee kardaa
