We saw that the reason that our consciousness changes when we leave the Holy congregation is that here we are sitting in the lap of the Guru, we are relaxed when we listen to His utterances because it is the truth and there is no need to think about it. But why does the world affect us when we leave the holy congregation ? Why does our consciousness change ? Please understand this. As long as we remain in our own world, as long as we remain in the illusion that I am separate from God - I am this, and that is mine, our consciousness cannot remain in the higher planes of our being. Because the world we have made for ourselves - family, relatives, etc. is the work of the mind, so the moment we go outside, the mind rules again. Even though our world consists of our immediate family and a few other people, and when we go outside there are so many other people, that still affects our consciousness because we are living in the illusion that I am separate from God and that brings our consciousness to the lower planes.
Initially Maharaj Ji tells us that the same Guru who is sitting on the takhat (throne) , is within you. There is no difference between God and Guru. We feel whatever is inside the Guru. The only difference is that God speaks and instructs through the Guru, but within us, He reveals Himself but does not speak. He reveals Himself within us, frees us from the mind, takes our consciousness to the higher realms of our being, and gradually merges it with Himself. It is mind blowing that even though we have heard it so many times that God is within us and we have felt Him thousands of times, but still this truth does not remain permanently in our consciousness that God is with me. And this happens with the human consciousness which is the most intelligent consciousness in the entire creation.
Even though we have heard thousands upon thousands of times that He dwells within me, even though I have felt Him thousands of times, but it still does not remain embedded in my consciousness that He dwells within me. Again and again we forget this truth. And, as long as we forget, our consciousness will fall down. We lose the peace, joy, and bliss that is available in the higher realms that belong to the heart area and above. But then one day suddenly something happens and it gets cemented in our consciousness that He dwells within me. At this stage, Maharaj Ji says:
satgur sang naahee man dolai
How beautiful! He says that whosoever reaches this state where we always remain conscious of the fact that God is with me, that consciousness cannot fall down; then the mind cannot make you fall down.
Please sing with awareness. All natural sounds, the sounds in His creation are within us. When we sing with awareness, our insides sing, one of those natural sounds will emerge from within us but if we are asleep then that natural sound is interrupted and it results in something else.
satgur sang naahee man dolai
The mind cannot waiver as long as we feel Him within.
amrit banee gurmukh bolai
Maharaj Ji says that this happens when we are in the process of rebirth. Gurmukh means one who is in the process of rebirth or has been reborn. In that state, whatever you speak will be Amrit; Amrit is God, and God is ishq, so Maharaj Ji is saying that when others hear what you say, it will produce ishq within them. How beautiful! See the beauty of Gurbani, see how these words came. There was no thinking involved! The words kept coming and arranged themselves like beads in a rosary.
Maharaj Ji says that when your consciousness starts staying in the higher planes, hearing the celestial music, feeling the divine light, intoxicated, it doesn’t claim anything that this is mine or that is mine, it is free. In that state, whatever you say, ishq speaks from within you, and it comes from your true self, even though it hasn’t formed completely.
amrit banee gurmukh bolai
We have heard the story about Guru Amar Das Ji and his daughter Bibi Bhani Ji. Bibi Bhani Ji was married to Ramdas Ji, who would later become the Guru. One day Bibi Bhani was helping with Guru Amar Das Ji’s bath. He was sitting on a wooden stool and one of the legs of the stool on the side where Bibi Bhani was sitting, was loose. Bibi Bhani pushed her foot under the stool for support in case the leg snapped. That is exactly what happened; the leg of the stool snapped and the nail that was holding the leg to the stool pierced Bibi Bhani’s foot. She continued with the seva while Guru Amar Das Ji had his eyes closed. When He opened his eyes, He saw blood flowing under the stool and asked Bibi Bhani, dear daughter, where is this blood coming from ? Bibi Bhani said I don’t know, and continued the seva, drying and giving Guru Amar Das Ji the change of clothes. Then Guru Ji saw her foot under the stool and realized what had happened. He was very pleased at her devotion and service and said, ask for anything you want. Bibi Bhani said, if you are so merciful then please let the Guruship stay within the family. Guru Amar Das Ji said that will surely happen because I have promised you, but this is against the laws of nature so this will bring adversities to the Guruship. This was meant to flow like an open river, finding its way naturally to the lowest point, but you have asked that the river not flow, and for a dam to be put on. Now, the river will rise and create turbulence. So, right from the time of the fourth Guru events started to happen, and we know that even before the Guruship was given to the fifth master, Guru Arjan Dev Ji, his brother was extremely jealous and committed acts of jealousy. He built another temple similar to Harmandir Sahib in the village and split Sikhi. More adversities came and the fifth Guru was martyred. So, right from the time of the fourth Guru, we start seeing these adversities because something happened that was against the laws of nature. We have been talking about the Satguru and witnessing His merciful faces. We will see why the Guruship was bestowed upon Guru Angad Dev Ji and Guru Amar Das Ji. We already know some things but there is more to it. In the coming days, we will see it in more detail.
As long as we are here in the sangat, we are in the lap of the Guru.
tayrai bharosai pi-aaray mai laad ladaa-i-aa.
bhooleh chookeh baarik tooN har pitaa maa-i-aa.
ha-o maan taan kara-o tayraa ha-o jaan-o aapaa.
How beautiful! Maharaj Ji says that the one who recognizes his or her true self, does not take pride in anything on the outside. He or she recognizes that this is the real me, I am divine light, so precious, so elevated, and how childish that I have been claiming that these things belong to me - these people, houses, cars, position, rank, and so on.
Maharaj ji says that when we realize our true self then the only thing we take pride in is our beloved, the Divine. We do not take pride in anything on the outside. It becomes clear that I was just being foolish. Now, my only source of pride and strength is the one who made me understand, and showed me this inner path; the one who took me by hand and helped me climb the steps on this path and made me experience my true self.
bhoolay sikh guroo samjhaa-ay.
He is the only one I am proud of now.
Please let your insides sing. When we are feeling the divine our inside is relaxed, and the natural sound can be produced only when we are relaxed. The natural sound means the divine sound. When our inside is not relaxed the strings within us are not tuned properly.
ha-o maan taan kara-o tayraa ha-o jaan-o aapaa.
Just like a stringed instrument such as a rabab or saaraNgee, God has installed strings within us. When these strings vibrate, sound is produced. In scientific terms, these strings are known as the vocal cords. When we are tense and worried, these strings do not function properly.
There is a letter from one of the sangat:
The writer says that my true self who is the aashik (lover), who has ishq with the Divine, I have lost that somewhere. The virtues that used to adorn my consciousness are also diminishing. And even in my very young years, I used to have the sense that I have to keep in mind the honor of the turban of my deceased father and the sacrifices of my mother, even those things are leaving me.
How has living in these countries influenced us ? What has maya done to us ? Look at all those things we have lost. If we honestly see ourselves, we are not how we used to be in our home land. Can we see it ? We used to have modesty, and immense respect for our parents. Dear child, thank you so much for sharing your feelings with us. Those virtues are not going to go anywhere now; God won’t let them disappear. Now that we are attached to Him, He is going to decorate our consciousness with those virtues. Let’s not entertain the thought that we have lost it, absolutely not! Rather we are finding it now, discovering it within us. We should be happy and thank Maharaj Ji.
Dhaarnaa:
haa-ay nee mayraa jee nahi lagdaa ais maiN day naalay

I feel so uncomfortable, so uneasy with this egoistic, false I of mine. When I look into the mirror, every time I see the same person.

Every time I look into the mirror, I see the same person. His eyes flooded with tears, it feels like I have given him some very deep wounds.
haa-ay nee may-thoN vaykh nee hunday, ohday nain parayshaaN bhaaray
That person in the mirror, I, I feel frightened to look at him, his eyes are flooded with tears. His eyes are restless. His eyes feel hurt, deeply hurt.
haa-ay nee mayraa jee nahi lagdaa ais maiN day naalay
(Dhaarna - End)
The sounds that God is producing in his are very fine sounds. Ishq has a sound. There is bairaag (pain of separation) in ishq, there is worship. When you don’t see your beloved, then a sound comes from within, a sound that God has put within us - that is the sound of bairaag.
God has also put within us the same feeling of pain of separation as the fish feels separation from water. See how Maharaj Ji gives us examples through nature. He says, see how the fish feels the pain of separation without water, similarly I have put the pain of separation within you. But why don’t you feel it ? See the cuckoo calling Him out so lovingly.
kaalee ko-il too kit gun kaalee.
apnay pareetam kay ha-o birhai jaalee.
O’ black cuckoo what is it that makes you so black ? And the cuckoo says that I am burning in the pain of separation from my beloved.
Everything is so subtle and wondrous! Let’s hear the harmonium now. Please feel the pain in the sound of the harmonium, longing in pain. Then, hear the sound of the singer as well.
ghar aavo laal pi-aaray
Please feel the tummy area, Maharaj ji will appear there. We will feel Him moving there. The more focused we are, more strongly He will make us feel His presence.
ghar aavo, ghar aavo
Now, we should experience which is described by Maharaj Ji as:
antar paraym paraapat darsan.
Maharaj Ji says that if you have love for me within you, then you will feel Me. First, Maharaj Ji frees our consciousness that is occupied with attachments. He removes the attachments and replaces them with His utterances, His presence, and one starts to recognize the truth and falsehood in this world. One has to meditate for this to happen. So, when we do simran, meditation, we are reclaiming the consciousness that had been seized by the worldly attachments. All those things that possessed our consciousness and we had worked so hard for them, now we have to work even harder to free ourselves from those attachments.
antar paraym paraapat darsan.
He says, if you have love for me within you then you will feel Me. Please hear the next line:
gurbaanee si-o pareet so parsan.
Parsan means to touch. Maharaj Ji says those who love Gurbani, I will touch them. There is a difference - one is that He reveals Himself within us and we feel His presence, the other is that He touches us with the hands of ishq. Until we started hearing Gurbani, we were just reading quickly without feeling anything. Now that we are able to hear His utterances, we are beginning to understand how profound this story is!
Maharaj ji says that if you have love for Me within you, you will feel Me, I will make Myself feel you. But if you love My utterances, then I will touch you. And His touch is the touch of ishq.
Dhaarnaa:
maa-ay nee maa-ay, nee saanoo ishq nay hath chhuhaa-i-aa
When He touches us, ishq touches us.
maa-ay nee maa-ay, nee saanoo ishq nay hath chhuhaa-i-aa
khaamoshee ohdee jaaN bol nee ohday, hai ibaadat roop sabaa-i-aa
My mother, oh my mother, ishq has touched me and now whether He speaks or not, the ishq within me remains absorbed in feeling the gratitude of the Divine.
Remember, ishq has two qualities - love and gratitude.
Now whether Maharaj Ji is speaking or not, when we come in the Darbar Sahib and whether there is paath (recitation of Gurbani) going on or not, His worship would start within us.
Even when He is silent, I keep worshiping Him.
maa-ay nee maa-ay, nee saanoo ishq nay hath chhuhaa-i-aa
(Dhaarnaa - end)
There is a letter from this doctor from Kapurthala. He says that I used to feel something touching my face, and I used to wonder what it was. And today in Khajana Darshan, I received the answer that it is God Himself who caresses my face lovingly.
He asks another question in the letter, that I also feel somebody touches my arms and hands, who is He?
Maharaj Ji says:
alaah paakaN paak hai sak kara-o jay doosar ho-ay.
Who else could it be other than the Divine.
Dhaarnaa:
jay oh nahee tay fir kaun vay sajnaa, aivayN saanoo tohNdaa ayN
Oh dear one, who else could it be other than the Divine. You are just playing with me, probing me.
(Dhaarnaa - end)
Dhaarnaa:

os mad nay taakat kho saadee, kar nimaanee-aaN nimar chadanee-aaN vay
When He touches us, it is so intoxicating and feels as if there is no strength in the body. He made me drink His ishq and that drink has made my ego lifeless, and now I feel egoless, humble, the dust of everyone’s feet.

Oh my dear friend, there is nothing I can be proud of, there is nothing which I feel is my power, wherever He asks me to sit, I sit there, wherever He asks me to go, I go there, wherever He asks me to stand I stand there.

When people ask me where do you live, I feel bewildered and start thinking what should I tell them.

If somebody asks me the path to his home, I just say something which doesn’t make sense.
