2493 - Khajana Darshan August 23, 2022 – Surrey (English Translation)

ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

॥ ਜਪੁ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥  ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥

Please focus at the hirdaa (heart area), at the forehead, or at the mool duaaraa (root point), or at the tummy.

We are seeing the role of the True Guru in the process of rebirth and witnessing His many merciful faces. One of His merciful faces is that He reveals the inner wealth to us. The True Guru takes us within to show us the true treasures of the real wealth, real Divinely wealth.

Maharaj Ji says:

ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਭਰਮ ਗੜੁ ਤੋੜਿਆ

so satgur Dhan Dhan jin bharam garh torhi-aa.

So blessed, so truly wealthy is my Guru who has shattered the heavy fort of my false beliefs.

ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੋੜਿਆ

so satgur vaahu vaahu jin har si-o jorhi-aa.

Wonderful, wonderful is my guru who has united me with God.

ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਅਖੁਟੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਦੇਇ ਦਾਰੂਓ

naam niDhaan akhut gur day-ay daroo-o.

Maharaj Ji says that by uniting me with the Divine, the Guru has bestowed upon me an inexhaustible treasure of a medicine which is cure for all my ills, be it anger, greed, attachment.

The Guru blesses us with the medicine for all the ailments of humanity, and that medicine is the Divine himself. When the Divine touches us, we take the Divine medicine, and that Divine medicine makes us free of all types of diseases.

ਮਹਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਤਿਨੈ ਬਿਦਾਰੂਓ

mahaa rog bikraal tinai bidaroo-o.

That medicine destroys the deepest-rooted ailment of ours - the false I, the ego, the wrong conception, the illusion that I am this, and all these things are mine.

bharam garh torhi-aa: He destroys the fort of illusion.

Then He says:

ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਖਜਾਨਿਆ

paa-i-aa naam niDhaan bahut khajaani-aa.

Maharaj ji says that the Guru opens the mouth of many treasures before us. Not only that He puts those treasures in our lap.

ਜਿਤਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ

jitaa janam apaar aap pachhaani-aa

Maharaj Ji says that the purpose of the human body is to recognize our true self, who am I ? Is anyone brave enough to announce to the world that we are to recognize our true self. People will laugh, and put your picture in the newspapers. How strange! We are at a point that this is now resonating with us but it took us a long time to get here. It took us a long time to accept the fact that I am not this false, egoistic I.

ਜਿਤਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ

jitaa janam apaar aap pachhaani-aa

Maharaj ji says that an infinitely precious fruit of human life is obtained when one recognizes the self, that who I am. I am divine light ( jot ) ! Maharaj calls the Divine light, jot, and He calls us jotee. Both are the same but the different names are used to talk about them.

Sangat is a must now!

I receive many letters. In one of the letters, the writer says that I came to the parking lot after work but I had no idea which car was mine, I could not even remember the color of my car, let alone where it was parked. When something like this happens, if we are in sangat, we do not waver. Without sangat, if one is on their own, they could lose their balance. I have seen people go mad because they are not able to understand what is happening. They would run to the doctor and say I have memory loss and the doctor may say, start eating almonds! Please recognize that sangat is a must now! Few weeks ago, I met someone who lost their mental balance because they didn’t have sangat, they didn’t have that level of sangat that was needed. Going back to the sangat who wrote the letter: Dear child, you did not remember which one is your car, but if you saw it with more subtlety you would have seen that all of these cars are mine, it’s just that I don’t have the keys to them. Otherwise they are all mine.

There is another letter from a very young daughter of mine from Surrey. She writes: My Dear Baba ji, it has been three years since the sangat has got together like this. The love that they bring to Surrey is unimaginable. Seeing the sangat eating together and sitting together and singing together in Divan, while we listen to Gurbani and Khajana Darshan, we all become one. Even though I haven’t talked to many people outside of Surrey, they all seem amazing. We do so much together, and I think that a lot of us don’t cherish sangat as much as we should. Even though we are on our own journey to meet Maharaj ji, the sangat plays a key role in everything. No matter how much paath (recitation) and meditation we do alone, I think it doesn’t compare as much as when we do it with sangat. You meet so many beautiful souls that are on the same path with you and it is so hard to forget them. I pray to Maharaj Ji that I stay with the sangat for as long as I live in this body because they are my home, they are my family. Without them, I feel empty.

We can see how Maharaj Ji is blessing these children.

ਜਿਤਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ

jitaa janam apaar aap pachhaani-aa

aap pachhaani-aa - to recognize oneself. We should remember to reflect upon ourselves every day and we will see that the people who possess our consciousness, to whom we gladly gave the possession, have put us on the path of miseries and suffering, and kept us in the cycle of birth and death. Maharaj Ji came in the form of Guru Granth Sahib Ji and is now freeing us.

We saw that as long as we keep feeling the Divine presence, our consciousness remains peaceful even when we go out of sangat. God and Guru are one.

Maharaj Ji says:

ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਕਿਥੈ ਮੈਨੋ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਈ

so satgur pi-aaraa mayrai naal hai jithai kithai maino la-ay chhadaa-ee.

How beautiful! Maharaj Ji says that whenever my mind catches hold of my consciousness, my Guru immediately arrives and frees me of my mind.

If thoughts are coming, we are in the clutches of the mind. The Guru says feel me, I am here. When we feel Him, He frees us.

ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਮੇਰੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੈ ਕਿਥੈ ਮੈਨੋ ਲਏ ਛਡਾਈ

so satgur pi-aaraa mayrai naal hai jithai kithai maino la-ay chhadaa-ee.

He is making us understand that whenever your mind catches hold of you, just remember Me. That is all, just remember Me!

Maharaj ji is telling us that whenever you come in the clutches of the mind, you must remember Me. Just remember Me and I will make you feel Me within, and you will be released.

ਜਿਤਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ

jitaa janam apaar aap pachhaani-aa

In so many of His utterances, Maharaj Ji is making us understand so lovingly that recognize yourself, you are something very precious.

Dhaarnaa:

ਤੇਰੇ ਬਿਰਹੋਂ ਦੇ ਸੱਪ, ਸਾਨੂੰ ਡੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ, ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਖ਼ੈਰ ਜਿੰਦੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਰਹੇ

tayray birhoN day sap saanoo dangday rahay, tay aseeN khair jinday tayree maNgday rahay

ਕੀ ਬੀਤੀਆਂ ਆਣ ਪੁੱਛੇਂਗੀ ਕਦੇ, ਇਹ ਸੋਚ ਕੇ ਸਾਹ ਅਸੀਂ ਭਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ

kee beetee-aaN aan puchhayNgee kaday, eh soch kay saah aseeN bharday rahay

I kept waiting for you that maybe sometime somewhere somehow you would come and meet me and ask me how are you, how was life without me? In that hope, I kept breathing, I stayed alive.

Please stay in meditation.

Yesterday we started talking about how Maharaj Ji gave the gurgaddi (guruship) to Bhai Lehna Ji, and then Guru Angad Dev Ji gave it to Baba Amardas Ji. It is very interesting and mysterious to understand that Baba Buddha Ji, who met Guru Nanak Dev Ji at the age of 10, reached the highest states of consciousness and became a Brahm Giaanee, was reborn, had complete knowledge of the truth, but he could not become the Guru. Maharaj Ji gave Baba Buddha Ji the honor of anointing the first five Guru Sahib’s. The one who anoints is considered to be higher or at least the same as the one who is being anointed. So, what is the reason that Baba Buddha Ji could not become the Guru ? We might say that there were tests and he could not pass. Yes, there were tests but there was something else that was very important, something the world could not see but we should understand.

When the fifth Guru announced at Amritsar Sahib, that all enlightened people in the world please come and bring your bani (utterances), a great spiritual Granth is being created and those who deserve, their utterances would be included in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Those enlightened people came to Amritsar Sahib, and presented their bani to Maharaj Ji but only a few were approved such as Bhagat Kabeer Ji, Baba Fareed Ji, Bhagat Ravidas Ji. What was the story behind this ? Please understand this. When the rebirth takes place, one attains the true knowledge about the self and the Divine, then that consciousness starts dwelling in the upper realms where the Divine light is always seen; there is infinite peace, joy, and grace. First thing is that we ourselves cannot reach that peak, that state. The Guru takes us by the hand and helps us reach there. The utterances of Guru Granth Sahib Ji have the power to take us there. That state is paradise, that is heaven. Maharaj Ji calls it the fourth state of our consciousness, or true self, or the liberation - liberation of our consciousness from all types of possessions. And the Guru takes us there. Now most of those who reach that state, start dwelling in that divinely place. Please understand this. Baba Buddha Ji had knowledge about the true self, about the divine. He had the same knowledge as Guru Angad Dev Ji, but Baba Buddha Ji did not know how to come down from that state. He did not know how to come down to the level of the world. We know the story about the ditch full of dirty water from washing utensils and a bowl that fell into it. Guru Nanak Dev Ji asked His sons Sri Chand and Lakhmee Das to retrieve the bowl, He asked others as well, and they said there are so many other bowls. Then Maharaj Ji asked Bhai Lehna Ji, who jumped in the ditch right away and brought out the bowl. What was the message in this story ? That you will have to be in the dirty water of the world. If you can, then you can become the Guru. This was the reason Baba Buddha Ji and other gursikhs could not become the Guru even though they had the knowledge. They did not have this! They did not know how to come back into the world, and how to relate to the people, and how to help them to take them there. It is not only the enlightenment that is needed to be the Guru, but the capacity to come down into the world, to come down into the streets, relate to the people and help them to take them there. This was the secret!

Kabeer Sahib had many devotees and became a Guru. Fareed Sahib, Ravidas Sahib also became Gurus because they helped free others in the world. That is why their bani is in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. They had the art, the blessings that while living at that highest plane, they would come down into the world and help others to take them there. Only their bani (utterances) were included in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Not of those who were enlightened, but didn’t know how to come down on the earth.

Maharaj Ji says:

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲੈ

satgur sang naahee man dolai.

The mind does not waver when I am with the True Guru.

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ

sant parsaad japai har naa-o.

The Guru mercifully tells us everything - you are not this body, you are something else. He asks us to meditate.

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਉ

sant parsaad har keertan gaa-o.

Now we can understand the meaning of keertan. God has put sounds in everything. To sing while staying with that divine sound that vibrates in everything, is known as keertan. Sometimes when we really enjoy the keertan, they have put in a lot of effort and practice to sync with that divine sound.

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਉ

sant parsaad har keertan gaa-o

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਗਲ ਦੁਖ ਮਿਟੇ

sant parsaad sagal dukh mitay

ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੇ

sant parsaad banDhan tay chhutay

With the Guru’s blessings, we are reborn and are freed from the shackles.

To the youth, I want to say, don’t be scared. Don’t think it’s easy to reach that stage. It takes a lot of time, lots of years, a lot of effort, and lots of blessings. So you are very lucky that you started this journey. In one of the shabad’s, Baba Fareed Ji says, start walking the path while you are in the morning of your life.

ਸੇਖ ਫਰੀਦਾ ਪੰਥੁ ਸਮ੍ਹ੍ਹਾਰਿ ਸਵੇਰਾ

saykh fareedaa panth samHaar savayraa. ||

To be without the sangat, is to just waste life. Let us please become focused at the hirdaa (heart area).

Dhaarnaa:

ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਜਿਊਣਾ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ

vay mainoo tayray baajhoN jioonaa gunaah lagi-aa

ਜਦੋਂ ਪੁੱਛੀ ਮੈਥੋਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ

jadoN puchhee maithoN kisay mayray pi-aar dee kahaanee

ਕਿੱਥੋਂ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀ ਓਹ ਜਬਾਨ, ਜਿਹੜੀ ਦੱਸਦੀ ਜਬਾਨੀ

kithoN li-aa-ouNdee oh jabaan, jiHrhee dasdee jubaanee

Whenever somebody asked me about this love story, I felt helpless. My tongue refused to say anything, my tongue said I can’t describe that. I felt helpless, I wanted to tell, but there was no way I could. And that helplessness made me cry within, that how beautiful this love story is, but it cannot be described.

Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s value cannot be estimated but at the very least we should recognize how blessed we are to have this most precious treasure. It is very important that this realization takes root within our consciousness.

ਕਿੱਥੋਂ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀ ਓਹ ਜਬਾਨ, ਜਿਹੜੀ ਦੱਸਦੀ ਜਬਾਨੀ

kithoN li-aa-ouNdee oh jabaan, jiHrhee dasdee jubaanee

ਇੰਝ ਰੋਇਆ ਸਾਡਾ ਦਿਲ, ਪਿੰਡ ਸਾਰਾ ਭਿੱਜਿਆ

injh roiaa saadaa dil, pind saaraa bhiji-aa

I cried within. I froze that I couldn’t describe this love story, and in that freezing, I cried within.

ਹਿੱਲ ਸਕੀ ਨਾ ਜਬਾਨ, ਨਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੰਝੂ ਡਿੱਗਿਆ

hil sakee naa jabaan, naa ko-ee hanjhoo digi-aa

But outside, no tears were shed. My tongue could not move, it all happened within!

Maharaj Ji says:

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਧਿਆਵਉ

kirpaa niDh kirpaal Dhi-aava-o

Maharaj Ji says that the Guru is an ocean of grace, He is an ocean of mercy.

We will talk about how to connect with the inner state of the Guru and secondly, that His utterances should be fully felt within us. If our entire consciousness is holding on to His utterance, then our Dhi-aan (focused consciousness) is on the Guru. Maharaj Ji says, keep your consciousness on Him, and you would be blessed with his qualities too.

ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਧਿਆਵਉ

kirpaa niDh kirpaal Dhi-aava-o

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਾ ਬੈਠਣੁ ਪਾਵਉ

saaDhsang taa baithan paava-o.

Those who love the Guru, He brings them to the holy congregation and makes their consciousness centered within. The consciousness that was scattered and running around, the Guru makes it settled and centered within. Please witness the miracles of the Guru!

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਤਾ ਬੈਠਣੁ ਪਾਵਉ

saaDhsang taa baithan paava-o.

ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਦਇਆ

mohi nirgun ka-o parabh keenee da-i-aa.

God was merciful upon me, and then what happened ?

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਇਆ

saaDhsang naanak naam la-i-aa

I found sadh sangat. God was merciful upon me.

The more we express our gratitude to Maharaj Ji that you brought me to sangat, revealed yourself in my consciousness, blessed me with these amazing gifts, firstly our inside will become more peaceful by expressing gratitude, and secondly Maharaj Ji becomes pleased with us.

ਮੋਹਿ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਦਇਆ

mohi nirgun ka-o parabh keenee da-i-aa.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਇਆ

saaDhsang naanak naam la-i-aa

By coming to sangat and connecting with the Guru, our inside is becoming filled with ishq, and our true self is ishq. When the Divine touches us, ishq touches us.

We have seen how music, pictures, and spoken words affect our consciousness. Later we will see how the written word affects our consciousness which will help us understand how Gurbani affects us. We should read 1-2 pages of these books everyday. Gurbani is very high, it is the destination, but in order to reach there the dhaarnaas that we sing are very helpful. These are precious treasures that we reflect upon.

Dhaarnaa:

ਮਾਏ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ ਨੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਨੇ ਹੱਥ ਛੁਹਾਇਆ

maa-ay nee maa-ay, nee saanoo ishq nay hath chhuhaa-i-aa

ਇਸ਼ਕ ਗੀਤ ਦਾ ਜਾਦੂ ਮਾਏ, ਕਿਸੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਝੋਲ ਪਵਾਇਆ

ishq geet daa jaadoo maa-ay, kisay virlay jhol pavaa-i-aa

Rare are those who are thirsty of ishq and they receive the ishq from the Divine through the Divine’s touch, and that’s a miracle!

Ishq is magic! Whenever Ishq speaks, it sings, never talks. The nature of the ishq is to sing because it’s mysterious and divinely song is always mysterious. The song of the ishq is mysterious.
