Transliteration Key for Gurbani
ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥
॥ ਜਪੁ॥
ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ। ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤਿ ਸਬਲ ਹੈ ਛਡੇ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
ih manoo-aa at sabal hai chhaday na kitai upaa-ay
Maharaj Ji tells us the reason and the solutions for all our problems.
Mind is the consciousness in which thoughts continuously arise. The natural state of our consciousness is to be empty of thoughts and stay attached to our Beloved, the Divine. It is completely opposite of what it is supposed to be. We experience thoughts continuously, and there is no way to stop these thoughts except meditation.
bal means power, sabal means bigger power, and ‘at sabal’ means extremely powerful.
Maharaj ji says that the mind is extremely powerful, and it does not leave us alone. It does not spare our consciousness from having thoughts, and that is the cause of all our problems.
Please focus at the hirdaa, the heart area.
Because we have thoughts continuously and there is fear and worries in the thoughts, we are always in a miserable state. We are going to move away from these thoughts and become peaceful forever.
New sangat, please engage all your consciousness in singing and hearing. There should be no space left for any thoughts to come, because thoughts are our problems. And others please feel the presence of the divine in the hirdaa.
Dhaarnaa:
ਆ ਬੈਠ ਨੀ ਸੱਖੀਏ ਕੋਲ ਮੇਰੇ, ਗੱਲ ਦਿਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਰੀਏ ਦੋ ਘੜੀਆਂ
aa baith nee sakhee-ay kol mayray, gal dilaaN dee karee-ay do gharhee-aaN
Oh, my sister friend, please sit close to me, let’s have a heart to heart for a few moments.
ਗੱਲਾਂ ਜੱਗ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਥੋਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ, ਜਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਸੁਣੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਜਿੰਨੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਪੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ
galaaN jag dee-aaN sabh thothee-aaN nay, jinee-aaN sunee-aaN tay jinee-aaN vee parhee-aaN
All the talk we do, and the thoughts we entertain are worldly and they all are empty; empty, without any real substance, without any profound meaning.
ਹਾਸੇ ਖੋਖਲੇ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਲੋਕ ਹੱਸਦੇ
haasay khokhalay vaykhi-aa lok hasday
ਤੇ ਸੁੱਕੇ ਨੈਣਾਂ ਚ ਵੇਖੀਆਂ ਝੂਠ ਝੜੀਆਂ
tay sukay nainaaN ch vaykhee-aaN jhooth jharhee-aaN
All the talk people do, we do, the worldly talk is empty. All the laughter in the world is shallow, falsehood, false, nothing real. Sometimes, even when people cry, that crying is false.
Please feel His loving presence.
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਤਿ ਸਬਲ ਹੈ ਛਡੇ ਨ ਕਿਤੈ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
ih manoo-aa at sabal hai chhaday na kitai upaa-ay
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਇਦਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
doojai bhaa-ay dukh laa-idaa bahutee day-ay sajaa-ay.
Our true self is ishq, it doesn’t need anything from anyone. Maharaj Ji says that our mind, the thinking consciousness, remains outside and makes us attached to people, places, things. Why is anger, attachment, lust, ego the cause of our misery, why ?
Our true self dwells within, that is our home, but we are roaming around in foreign territory. How can we become peaceful ? Please understand this. Our home is within, our country is within, and our consciousness is used to that native atmosphere. The atmosphere of the insides where the temperature remains at a certain degree. But outside, when the temperature becomes different than the temperature of the inner land of our consciousness, our consciousness feels uncomfortable.
Everything is very subtle, and until we offer our entire consciousness to Gurbani, we cannot understand the story, let alone reach somewhere. Until we become utterly humble and realize that I don’t know anything, these things cannot be heard, let alone take root in our consciousness and implement them in our life. Just to hear these things, just to hear what is the cause of our miseries, we have to free our consciousness from the world.
Our consciousness which is us, its land is within, not outside, it is used to its native land, its native atmosphere. When we are in the mother’s womb, that inside temperature is what feels naturally comfortable to our consciousness. Notice that whenever it is too hot or too cold, it is difficult to focus our consciousness because it is uncomfortable for our consciousness; it is not its native atmosphere. Our consciousness, which is us, we are yearning for our native atmosphere. Until and unless we start living, dwelling in our own land, in our own country which is within, which we are used to, we cannot be peaceful. We are used to that inner peace; we are used to the inner fragrance, the inner lights, the inner music that is so peaceful, that peaceful light, like the moon light, and the inner gardens. Until and unless we don’t start dwelling permanently in our native land, the inner world, we can never become peaceful, we can never get out of the cycle of birth and death.
What do we do ? We find the solution to this by going places and having a so-called good time; let’s go there and have a good time! That’s not the solution because our being wants to go within, not somewhere else. This should be understood very well, and once we understand this, our life can change instantly. And if we don’t understand then we can keep on uttering Waheguru Waheguru, and nothing is going to change because we are outside while we are saying Waheguru Waheguru. We are looking outside, our thoughts are about the outside world, and it cannot make any difference. It cannot! Our being is crying to go within, to its native land and stay there. Please feel the insides, that is our country. With all our heart, please!
Kabeer Sahib says:
ਕਬੀਰ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦਿਲ ਸਾਬਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਕਹਾਂ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
kabeer jaa kee dil saabat nahee taa ka-o kahaaN khudaa-ay
If you are not doing this with all of your consciousness, then you are not allowed into the country of the Divine and His country is our home.
Dhaarnaa:
ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਨ ਤੜਫਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ, ਨੀ ਮਾਏ ਦੇਸ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ
mayree jaan tarhafdee rahandee, nee maa-ay days jaan la-ee
The day we understand the story, right from that moment, our consciousness gets pulled within, we feel like meditating, and meditating for longer and longer periods of time. That is our true self and wanting to go home. This other thing on the outside, which is due to our past karma, which keeps attaching us to people, places, and things on the outside and is the source of misery. Our true self is always looking to go home and the mind wants to keep us on the outside. When we experience thoughts continuously, something is preventing us from going to our native land. Maharaj Ji says I have explained everything to you, now it is up to you, you have to work for it.
ਆਪਣ ਹਥੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਕਾਜੁ ਸਵਾਰੀਐ ॥
aapan hathee aapnaa aapay hee kaaj savaaree-ai
Maharaj Ji says:
ਜਿਨੀ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਤਿਨੀ ਸਾਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਚਾਖੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥
jinee chaakhi-aa tinee saad paa-i-aa bin chaakhay bharam bhulaa-ay.
He says that the one who has tasted the peace, joy, atmosphere of his native land, only he knows. Rest of the world is just aimlessly wandering outside.
During the North American trip, we had started seeing the different faces of the Guru. Guru is the being through whom God operates.
When we hear what the Guru says and the Guru sees that we are listening, the power of the Guru pulls our consciousness and makes it focused in meditation (dhi-aan). Our consciousness remains outside and we cannot make it focused in dhi-aan on our own.
ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਭਰਮ ਗੜੁ ਤੋੜਿਆ ॥
so satgur Dhan Dhan jin bharam garh torhi-aa
ਸੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੋੜਿਆ ॥
so satgur vaahu vaahu jin har si-o jorhi-aa
Right now that power is operating through Guru Granth Sahib Ji. That is why the maximum blessings are bestowed in the sangat in His presence. Once we realize that the Guru dwells everywhere like the Divine, and if we are awake, anytime we remember Him, anytime Guru Granth Sahib Ji comes into our consciousness, we will feel like focusing (dhi-aan) in meditation.
The Guru is a multidimensional phenomenon. He is a miracle, He creates miracles, and He has numerous merciful faces. One is that He is ishq. Then He destroys the heavy fort of illusion; the delusion that I have my own identity, my being is separate, my being is independent of God, my being is independent of nature. The Guru shatters this delusion and shows us that you are part of His creation. You are part of nature.
Then He teaches us how to hear. Through hearing we become more and more grounded, and the Guru makes us capable of feeling God. The worldly consciousness is not capable of feeling God, it can only happen with the Guru’s blessings.
Then the Guru is a painter. He paints beautiful pictures in numerous shabads. For example, bharam garh torhi-aa - destroys the fort of illusion, mohay machhlee tum neer - I am a fish and you are the water.
We also saw that the Guru reveals the inner treasures to us, gives us rebirth out of Himself and makes us into our true self. He has infinite compassion for God’s creation. The entire Guru Granth Sahib Ji is a song that came out of His compassion.
Then the Guru assumes the form of our brother. He says:
ਆਵਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਕਰਹੁ ॥
aavhu sant milhu mayray bhaa-ee mil har har kathaa karahu
mayray bhaa-ee - Guru says you are my brother. He says you are a sant (saint). He says come oh my dear brother, you in reality are a saint, your true self dwells within. Saint means one who has become the truth - you are a saint, your land is within, your country is within and so is mine. So, we are brothers!
kathaa means to understand or make someone else understand.
Then the Guru says, come my brother, feel the Divine within, keep feeling Him. And as you start dwelling with the Divine, you would start knowing the truth about yourself, about life, about this whole creation. This is true knowledge, true understanding. What you learnt from the outside was not the true understanding, it was worldly.
ਆਵਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਕਰਹੁ ॥
aavhu sant milhu mayray bhaa-ee mil har har kathaa karahu
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਹੁ ॥੧॥
har har naam bohith hai kaljug khayvat gur sabad tarahu. ||1||
Maharaj Ji says recite the sacred word Waheguru with all your heart while focusing your consciousness (dhi-aan), and Waheguru will reveal Himself. He will be present as long as you are awake and connected to Him. As soon as you have any thought, He is going to hide.
Maharaj Ji says that God is the ship who takes us from the lowest point in our body to upwards, transforms our consciousness and makes us truth. As long as we keep feeling Him, stay with Him, He takes our consciousness upwards and as the consciousness moves upwards it transforms, and one day we are reborn; we are completely absorbed in hearing the Celestial Music and feel the Divine light all around us, and become our true self. Maharaj Ji says remain boarded on that ship.
mayray man har gun har uchrahu
He says keep reciting Waheguru, Waheguru and that is going to keep you boarded on that ship. By remaining connected with Him, your consciousness is going to be filled with divine virtues. Your true self has all the divine virtues.
ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਊਤਮੁ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਜਨ ਕਰਹੁ ॥
kaa-i-aa nagar meh raam ras ootam ki-o paa-ee-ai updays jan karahu
Your country, your land is within, so please remain within.
Please see what the Guru says when He talks to us as a brother.
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਤ ਲਿਖੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰਹੁ ॥
mastak likhat likhay gun gaa-ay mil sangat paar parahu
He says that you are my brother. It was written on your forehead, in your fate, that you will sing His glories, you will be blessed with saadh sangat, and will recite Waheguru, Waheguru in sangat. Keep singing His glories with all your heart and your consciousness will come home to its native land, within.
We can see that life has no purpose without sangat, without meditation.
Dhaarnaa:
ਵੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਬਾਝ ਜਿਊਣਾ ਗੁਨਾਹ ਲੱਗਿਆ
vay mainoo tayray baajhoN ji-oonaa gunaah lagi-aa
Living without sangat felt like living a sinful life.
ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾ ਨਸੀਬ ਸਾਡੇ ਆਣ ਕੇ ਉਠਾਏ ਵੇ
kisay naa naseeb saaday aankay uthaa-ay vay
No one came and woke up my fortune.
ਨਾ ਹੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਜੋਤ ਵਾਲੇ, ਦੀਵੜੇ ਜਗਾਏ ਵੇ
naa hee kisay jot vaalay deevarhay jagaa-ay vay
Neither did anyone light up the lamp of divine light.
ਤੇ ਨਾਮ ਇਸ਼ਕ ਦਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੇ-ਪਾਕ ਲੱਗਿਆ
tay naam ishk daa lokaaN noo baypaak lagi-aa
God is love, He is ishq, but when I say that in the world, they look at me differently as if I have said something inappropriate.
