Can somebody share what we understood by daat (most precious gift) earlier?

Dhaarnaa:

Ji, sangat who listen to older deewaans, please raise your hand. Most of the sangat does; thank you! Now, we will understand the deewaan’s from previous years if we listen to them. We won’t understand right now what is being talked about today. These are very deep concepts and until we understand the root, we won’t be able to comprehend this. If we listen to the previous deewaans, we must have talked about ishq as the most precious gift.

In the fourth Pauri of Japji Sahib, Maharaj Ji says that the language of the Divine is of ishq, and whosoever calls Him with ishq in his or her consciousness, He comes running. Those who go to Him and keep begging for the most precious gift, He bestows that gift only to those who have ishq in them. What is the most precious gift?

jee-a daan day bhagtee laa-in har si-o lain milaa-ay.

It is our soul that is the most precious gift (daat). Maharaj Ji calls it daat. We have talked about this before but it is not easy to understand. Until it gets absorbed in our bones, we won’t understand anything. The mind will delude us that I know everything; I feel this and that. That’s wonderful but the destination is not clear, the path is not clear. Maharaj Ji says He doesn’t just give the daat to anyone who is just passing by;

aakhahi mangahi dayhi dayhi daat karay daataar.

You have to sit at His door and keep begging again and again and again. Those who grasp this, and start doing this, will understand everything. But we know how challenging it is!

suhaylaa kahan kahaavan

tayraa bikham bhaavan.

Maharaj Ji says it is easy to talk but to appeal to Him, to have some value in His eyes, is difficult. To become someone whom He has ishq with, is difficult. So, please listen to older deewans, and listen only when we can sit down with complete focus and eyes closed, and not while we are working in the kitchen or driving, and so on.

Maharaj Ji says that those who come to know and want to know the story of the life, they go to the Divine, and keep begging Him of the most precious gift from Him. He says the most precious gift is our soul.

jee-a daan gur poorai dee-aa raam naam chit laa-ay.

Now even if we remain with one ang (page) of Guru Granth Sahib Ji in a day, let us please understand what Gurbaanee is saying. That is going to happen when we become used to sitting alone and doing veechaar (pondering, reflecting). In sangat, our consciousness becomes focused, but it goes deeper when we sit alone by ourselves because in sangat we are aware of where we are, who else is there, and so on. When we are by ourselves, we can drown and go deeper. It’s important that now we learn to be by ourselves. Until we need someone else, we won’t be able to become peaceful, and if we can’t become peaceful, quiet within, then there is no way we can take the next step. The day you realize that there is this immense treasure within me, infinite silence, deep peace, then you are going to wish that nobody comes close to me. At present, we want someone close to us but once we realize who we truly are then it won’t be like that. Our true self does not attach with anyone on the outside. What we do is that we are really close with one person, and perhaps somewhat close to 8-10 other people, but our soul cannot do that. Our soul remains with God permanently, constantly, uninterruptedly, continuously, there’s no way the two can be separated.

jee-a daan gur poorai dee-aa raam naam chit laa-ay.

aap kirpaal kirpaa kar dayvai naanak gur sarnaa-ay.

Maharaj Ji says, those who come to the refuge of the Guru, the Divine mercifully bestows the gift of his or her soul upon them.

I just remembered that recently a man was interviewed who was used by the government during the 1984 attack on Harmandir Sahib. That person said that the government was right in doing what they did. The listeners felt that the man had no soul, that his soul had died. When we are separated from the soul, we have no connection with it. So, we are living without our souls. We have learnt many things from outside which are acceptable to the society. That is not our innate, real, inner nature.

Until we have a permanent connection with the soul, we remain with the mind; the mind captures us and drives us. The mind has learnt from the outside how to be in the world and what to say. That talk cannot be from the depth of our soul;  it is fake and is learned behavior.

aap kirpaal kirpaa kar dayvai naanak gur sarnaa-ay.

Maharaj Ji says that those who come to the refuge of the Guru, He makes us unite, tells us, shows us, and takes us inside. The Guru is going to tell us the story - who you are now, who you truly are, what is God; the real story is going to be told by the Guru. Guru takes us inside, and makes us meet God. We feel the Divine and are under the illusion that our consciousness that was roaming outside is now feeling the Divine. The consciousness that was roaming outside does not want to come in at any cost; it’s world is outside. Firstly, it does not want to come inside, and secondly it is not allowed to come within. The consciousness that feels the Divine inside, is our soul, our true self, the fourth state of consciousness. Sometimes, for a few moments here and there, we become the soul, but that too not fully because the impact of the outside world still lingers around us.

jee-a daan gur poorai dee-aa raam naam chit laa-ay.

Maharaj Ji says the one who happily remains with the Divine, and wants to keep dwelling with the Divine, He bestows the gift of their true self (jee-a daan) upon them.  Since ages, He has always been willing to dwell with us and keeps our soul with Him all the time, but we are not willing to dwell with Him. The day we realize this, we will cry how we have wasted so many lives. The day we come to realize that to live without soul, is to live in the mind, and that’s all misery, hunger, and all noise.

bhukhi-aa bhukh na utree jay bannaa puree-aa bhaar.

In the very first paurhee of Japji Sahib, He says that to remain separate from our souls, and to live out of our mind is to live in the deafening noise within. It is to live a life of a beggar, a life of a forever hungry person.

Our true self remains with God all the time. When we feel the Divine within, it’s not this consciousness which remains outside, the consciousness occupied by the mind. No! Our soul feels God because she lives with Him all the time, and that is us!

aakhahi mangahi dayhi dayhi daat karay daataar.

What does this mean; to ask the Divine again and again - please give me the gift of my soul, please give me my true self? It means, please keep me with You!

Maharaj Ji says do you know why you have to keep begging again and again from me for your soul? Because you come everyday, you stay with me for a very short time, and then you leave! So, I can see that you are not the real merchant; you don’t have ishq with me, and it’s a story of ishq. How could you leave me if you had ishq with me?

You remember the Divine and He comes running, but you leave after a very short time, and then you complain that He doesn’t bestow your true self upon you! Is that fair of you to complain? Now, we have to sit; sit alone and close the door. The door to the room may remain open but when you go inside, close that door and stay within.

The moment we recognize who I am; not just a scanty recognition but a deep understanding; a deep understanding that I am this. From this moment on, our life becomes sacred; our life becomes divine life. We recognize that I am immortal; that I am permanently attached with God, and God cannot die, so is there any possibility of me dying? No, because our soul remains permanently attached with God. Once we realize that I am this, and start dwelling with God all the time, then we realize that I am immortal. God is immortal, and I cannot be separated from Him, so there is no way I can die. That is the space where we become nirbhau, fearless.

Our biggest fear is the fear of death, all the time. It is hidden; I don’t want to be sick because sickness can bring about death; I don’t want to be in an accident because I can die; I want to have a house and all these things quickly because I have limited time and I am going to die. So, once you see that I cannot die, that is when we become fearless and our life becomes sacred.

Our soul is always in sahaj. We must keep a very strict eye on ourselves, on the state of our consciousness. Am I peaceful? Am I being pulled outside? Am I worried? Is there noise within me? Do I feel hungry to become my true self? We can see that even a genuine hunger for understanding the true story takes our consciousness to new heights, even though we have not realized it.

sehjay hee bhagat oopjai sahj pi-aar bairaag.

You will be in ishq with Him and bairaag (detached) from the mind.

The mind is a part of our consciousness, about ten percent, that is somewhat awake and it has created its own world on the outside. The remaining ninety percent of our consciousness is asleep. The mind rules over that ten percent and its job is lust, anger, greed, attachment, and ego. When all our consciousness comes within, then we become the soul. This consciousness on the outside does not die, but it becomes pure and comes within. Initially, when more consciousness is outside, it is difficult to focus but as we meditate, this consciousness on the outside also becomes pure and at some point it doesn’t even come outside.

Yesterday, after the deewaan, a very blessed soul whose house is in California, was telling me that now I know what ishq is. I cannot be taken out no matter what I’m doing; I am permanently attached to Him. If somebody calls me outside, i.e. lust, greed, attachment, anger, or ego, there is no way I can be taken outside. He said, is this ishq? I said, yes, this is ishq!

sahjai hee tay sukh saat ho-ay bin sahjai jeevan baad.

Maharaj Ji says, our consciousness, our real self remains still, calm, serene, all the time. There is no noise, she is silent. In that silence, is the total fulfillment. As long as we remain separated from our real self, we are going to remain unsatisfied, in turmoil, hungry, full of noise, miserable. He says to live while remaining away from the soul, is to live a life full of conflict .

jaa ka-o har rang laago is jug meh so kahee-at hai sooraa.

He says those who realize their true self, their soul, and live out of soul, they are ishq. They are the bravest persons on the face of this Earth because it requires a real, brave person, who refuses to be occupied by, or who refuses to occupy, any person, any thing, any place outside.

Our mind occupies people, places, and things. Our soul does not occupy anyone or anything. God is ishq; does He ever say you cannot go outside? No! You can see the cheapness of attachment and the greatness of ishq! We haven’t gone to Him for ages but He still does ishq with us.

We are all walking on this path but at different speeds; it depends on how hungry we are to become our true self. Some are hungry to collect things on the outside, some are hungry to become the true self. Even though some are slow, they are walking, and some are flying. What is the difference?

ik ho-ay asvaar iknaa saakh-tee.

iknee baDhay bhaar iknaa taakh-tee.

He says some have come to know their story, they became ready to walk, and they started walking; He says they are going to reach. They saddled up and are already on their way. Others are burdened with people, places, and things in their consciousness. How will they walk?

Maharaj Ji says you must watch yourself - are you ready to go on this pilgrimage to meet your real self? Are you ready? He says I’m going to blow the whistle. Are you ready?

Dhaarnaa:

aapnaa aapaa vay sajnaa……muhabat laasaanee ay

ti-aar hokay tur painaa…..soori-aaN dee nishaanee ay

sooraa means brave.

Those who get ready to leave, those who get ready to go on the pilgrimage, He says they are the bravest people. To them, He says:

I’m a sacrifice to you, because you are so brave.
