Hearing His utterances, all of our consciousness should run inward and start trembling, out of love for Him, out of the knowledge that I’m in His presence, I’m in His land.

gurmukhay gurmukh nadree raam pi-aaraa raam.

Please come at the forehead.

Maharaj Ji says that the Gurmukh sees his Beloved within himself. We have to become Gurmukh. Who is Gurmukh?

Gurmukh is our true self. Maharaj calls him Gurmukh; Guru and God are the same, mukh means face. Gurmukh means the one whose face is always connected to the Divine; the bubble that is always connected to the ocean. The bubble is above the ocean but the part of the ocean touching the bubble is Gurmukh, and it is not just that part of the ocean that is touching the bubble; the entire ocean is connected to it. We live in an ocean called space; it is the Divine ocean and we are occupying some space in that ocean. In sleep, we are assuming that the space we have occupied is “I” and it is separate from everyone. But, we cannot be separate from Him. nadree means to see. Gurmukh is already connected to the Divine so what does Gurmukh nadree mean? It means that when we go within, we feel the Divine and the thing that feels the Divine is Gurmukh, our true self. Maharaj Ji also calls it jee-a.

jee-a daan gur poorai dee-aa raam naam chit laa-ay.

The most precious gift that the Guru blesses us with, is our true self, our soul, the fourth state of consciousness. When we go in and Maharaj Ji makes Himself feel us, He is giving us the gift of Gurmukh; He is giving us the gift of our true self.

gurmukhay gurmukh nadree raam pi-aaraa raam.

Maharaj Ji says that your Beloved is so precious love for your true self, that your true self cannot be separated from her Beloved at any cost, in any way.

When Maharaj Ji uses the word love, that means ishq, not attachment. Attachment means, in sleep to own somebody, to own some place, to own something, in sleep. To own somebody; this person is mine; can you imagine that? Ishq is different - let’s understand that.

raam naam pi-aaraa jagat nistaaraa raam naam vadi-aa-ee.

Maharaj Ji says those who fell in ishq with their inner world, are saved. They are saved from their own so-called “I”; the “I” who says I love this person, I love that person. Otherwise nobody can save us.

halat palat raam naam suhaylay gurmukh karnee saaree.

He says to recognize that I’m Gurmukh, I am the soul, is the noblest deed one can do.

naanak daat da-i-aa kar dayvai raam naam nistaaree.

Maharaj Ji blesses us with our true self out of His mercy towards us, out of His ishq towards us. Ishq or da-i-aa are together. When we go within, we feel Him, and He says that this thing that is feeling the Divine is your true self. Come sit here and see how beautiful you are; learn how to sit here with Me, learn how to remain with me. If you just come once in a while that won’t be enough; you will forget me again. Why don’t you learn how to remain with me?

I keep repeating this everyday that from now onwards progress can only happen if we understand the importance of living with the self, sitting with the self.

Please stay at the forehead and keep feeling the Divine. Please understand attachment and ishq. We know that attachment is different from ishq but we still don’t know what ishq is.

Maharaj Ji says:

su-inay kaa birakh pat parvaalaa ful javayhar laal.

Maharaj Ji says that you in fact are such a precious tree, Gurmukh; with so valuable leaves, flowers, and fruits. And right now, you are thinking of yourself as a leaf on the tree. Right now your behavior is like a leaf on a tree; you choose one leaf of the tree and pour all your love on that person. Maharaj Ji questions: what about the branch on which the leaf is attached; shouldn’t you love that branch too? What about the stem which is supporting the branch; do you feel some gratefulness towards that stem? And how about the bark which protects the tree from the sun? How about the roots who are giving food to the entire tree? How about the soil, the earth, who so lovingly holds the roots of the tree in her bosom? And then how about the sea, the water due to which the soil becomes fertile to give the nutrients and food to the roots. Don’t you owe any love to that? How about the air? How about the sun? How about the space in which the tree is? Please understand here, that the leaf on the tree cannot exist without the tree; the tree cannot exist without soil, earth; earth cannot give anything to the tree without water, ocean; the tree cannot grow without the sun, the air, the space. So that little leaf is not existing on its own; it is attached to the whole universe. Can the leaf exist on its own? The same way Maharaj Ji is saying can you live on your own? He is indirectly asking us, can you live on your own?

Sometimes we hear from the false I that I don’t need anything, I have everything, I don’t need

anyone. Can we live on our own?

har bin ki-o jeevaa mayree maa-ee.

Maharaj Ji says that the leaves, trees, earth, sun, air, ocean, everything is God. So, can we live without Him? We feel Him within and understand that He dwells within us and we cannot exist without Him. But we cannot even exist without His presence outside. In fact, there is no inside or outside; the walls of our body have created this illusion of inside and outside. So, we can see that there is no possibility that we can exist on our own, whom we call “I”.

Please understand this. The leaf is connected to the universe; it doesn’t have any existence on its own. But this thought is so difficult to break that I am not this leaf and no other leaf can be mine. In fact, the whole tree is mine, the whole earth is mine, the whole ocean is mine, the whole air is mine, the whole universe is mine. The consciousness that realizes this, is our true self - that is who we are!

pavan guroo paanee pitaa maataa Dharat mahat.

How beautiful! Maharaj Ji says just like that leaf, you cannot live without air, you cannot live without water, you cannot live without food which comes from the earth. You cannot live without this space. Are you really independent of His creation? Are you really existing on your own? Are you separate from anything in this universe?

pavan guroo paanee pitaa maataa Dharat mahat.

jinee naam Dhi-aa-i-aa ga-ay maskat ghaal.

jinee naam Dhi-aa-i-aa - Those who meditated and realized the truth that I am not anything big; I am just a part of His creation; His creation is so vast and I am a tiny part of that.

ga-ay maskat ghaal - their efforts in life were valued.

naanak tay mukh ujlay kaytee chhutee naal.

naanak tay mukh ujlay - They became free from the false I that was the source of misery.

kaytee chhutee naal - others who used to be around them were also freed because they saw and learned as well.

Bhai Nand Lal Ji had ishq with Guru Nanak Dev Ji in his tenth appearance. Maharaj Ji gave the surname Singh to every male, whosoever was blessed with Amrit. But Maharaj Ji did not change the name of Nand Lal; lal means the most precious gem. He said you are my most precious gem because you are in ishq with me.

Nand Lal Ji says:

sabaa chooN halkaa haa-i zulaf oo raa shaanaa mee saazad

He wrote this ghazal from this utterance of Maharaj Ji:

chirhee chuhkee pahu futee vagan bahut tarang.

chirhee chuhkee - sparrows are chirping, means celestial music is playing.

pahu futee - a new dawn is here, means I am being reborn.

Let’s please feel the Divine at the forehead. He says the new dawn is here, sparrows are chirping, and a very sweet breeze of the early morning is kissing the area of my forehead. The new dawn is here - means celestial music is here, I am being reborn. New day, new dawn is here, my true self!

Dhaarnaa:

saaday mathay day halkay noo….nee maa-ay aj keeHnay chhoo-hi-aa

Oh my mother, who is touching the area of my forehead so lovingly, and the new dawn is here, celestial music is being played.
