This letter is from a daughter of mine from Bolivia. She writes: Dear Baba Ji, last year you talked in length about the different faces of the Guru. I have been following Khajana Darshan for the last four and a half years, and I am experiencing different feelings for the Guru. I feel I have different relationships with Him, like He’s my father, my lord, my beloved, my best friend, a wine of Ishq, a mediator between me and God, a very powerful presence, or my only hope, or my only refuge, my only place to rest, or total fulfillment, or grace, or a mirror in whom I can see myself, or a magician. Today I was sitting and pondering that if I had to choose just one relationship with Him, I think I would choose Him as my beloved. Baba Ji, what do you think about this relationship?

Beta, you are talking about the relationship with the Guru. Guru and God are the same; Guru is the one in whom God is operating, through whom God is at work. All relationships are conditional, and all relationships have demands. Even the so-called worldly love relationship is demanding, and has conditions. Those conditions and demands are not written on a piece of paper but they are there, in the very name of the relationship. But the relationship with the Guru or with God is unique. It is so unique that it should not be categorized with other, other relationships. In fact, it’s not a relationship, it is ishq at work! His ishq makes us recognize who we are, and we find that we too are ishq. Then there is a meeting of ishq with ishq, not a relationship. There are no demands, no conditions, pure holy scared ishq. There is the meeting of ishq with ishq and then mergence of ishq with ishq.

I am so grateful for the beautiful letter that you wrote. Your letter asks us to become very clear about a few things. One is the relationship between Guru and disciple, Guru and Sikh. Guru means that where Sikh is also present. Guru without Sikh has no meaning or a Sikh without Guru has no meaning. Sikh has so much faith in the Guru, so complete full faith in the Guru, that he or she can open himself or herself to the Guru without any fear or resistance, and they are ready to drop all their masks before the Guru. The Guru has so much faith in the Sikh, in the disciple, that He shares His being with the Sikh, with the disciple. Guru shares His being. Guru or God is the same, so God reveals Himself within the Sikh. The Guru is sure that my Sikh is capable of receiving me even though I am a mystery, and I will remain a mystery. But, my Sikh has so much faith in me, that he is ready to have me, a mysterious being, in his womb; that the Sikh is ready to become pregnant with the Guru. When we feel God or Guru within, we are pregnant with Him.

ik til pi-aaraa veesrai rog vadaa man maahi.

gurmukh jis har man vasai tis maylay gur sanjog

Maharaj Ji says that it’s a Gursikh within whom God has started dwelling. He’s a Gursikh who is pregnant with God. This truth is so mind boggling, that first we become pregnant with God. When we feel Him within, we become pregnant with God.

kaa-i-aa kaaman jay karee bhogay bhoganhaar

Maharaj Ji says that God comes and starts dwelling within the disciple, within the Sikh. First we become the womb for the Guru. When that becomes permanent then the Guru becomes the womb for us. We are lodged in the Guru’s womb, we hear the Anhad Shabad and feel the divine light. We are reborn out of the Guru and He shows us our true self. He says, this is who you are; you are not that false I; that was a dream, a house of sorrows. You are ishq!

satgur kai janmay gavan mitaa-i-aa

All our sorrows are because of the world that we have created. By giving us rebirth he shows us - this is who you are; you are a soul, you are ishq, complete within yourself.

Sikh is, a disciple is, he is, but he doesn’t know who he is! We are going to be lodged in the Guru’s womb and then we are going to be reborn. A mysterious being comes and starts dwelling within us. Then He becomes the womb for us and gives us a new birth, and that newborn “us” would also be a mystery; it can never be known who you are. You would be totally new, not a trace of this “I” would be left; you would be just ishq, complete in yourself, fulfilled!

Please focus at the heart.

Dhaarnaa:

vay dil baageeN aa sajanaa, naal aun tayray ishq havaavaaN

Oh, my Beloved, please come to the garden of my hirdaa. Let me behold your pious vision.

tayraa aaunaa chufayraa mahikaavay, mayraa kan kan uth bahi jaavay

tayree mahik mayray vichoN aavay, mayree vaykhanee ch gholdaa tooN jaavayN

jaaN dil baageeN aa sajanaa

naal aun tayray ishq havaavaaN, jaaN dil baageeN aa sajanaa

Oh my darling beloved, please come to the garden in my heart. I have heard that it’s an ishq garden, Garden of Ishq. And when you come, your fragrance spreads all around; every pore of me gets up; I become fragrant with your presence. I become fragrant with your presence, and your presence starts dwelling in my eyes. You become dissolved, in my looks.

Maharaj Ji says:

mooN piree-aa sa-o nayhu ki-o sajan mileh pi-aari-aa

Let us all sing Gurbani with all our heart, please.

I want to have ishq with my beloved. How beautiful!

I want to have ishq with my beloved. How can I meet my dear friend? Who is the dear friend? The Guru. The Guru makes us meet the Divine. The disciple says, I want to fall in love, I want to have ishq with my beloved, but how can I meet my dear friend who would introduce me to my beloved, who would tell me about my beloved, who would introduce me.

ha-o dhoodhaydee tin sajan sach savaari-aa

Maharaj Ji makes it clear. He says my dear friend is the one whom God has decorated with His presence. Guru is the one whom God has decorated with God’s presence.

We must start feeling such a deep sense of gratitude, sincere love, and humility towards the Guru who introduces us to God; He makes us meet God; He makes us become pregnant with God, and becomes the reason for our re-birth. Guru is that magician, that power, that majesty who makes us pregnant with God. Every moment we should bow to Him and keep doing namaskar.

Ji, we should never slander anyone. In Japji Sahib, Maharaj Ji says:

asaNkh nindak sir karahi bhaar

He says there are those who slander others and they put a burden on themselves.

Maharaj ji says that to slander anyone should never happen. He says it’s such a sin that it makes us move away from God. Every sin makes us move farther away from God. He goes to the extent of saying that whenever you forget God you are committing a sin because you are moving away from God. So slandering, talking negatively about anybody, no matter who it is, should never happen. The whole universe is our friend, the whole mankind, we are real brothers and sisters. Even in the worst case, if somebody is feeling enmity towards you without any reason, even then we should have a very humble and respectful attitude towards them because they are a temple of God. They are carrying God, they are not something small!

Dhaarnaa:

sun vay manaa nahee-oN, injh vay kareedaa

hothaaN naaloN dil chanaa, vakh nahee kareedaa

Oh my mind, please never disconnect my lips from my heart, that way I will lie.

bhul kay vee kisay dee vee niNd nahee kareedee

aapanay hee aapay naaloN, dooree naheeN vaDheeNdee

By slandering others, we move, we become farther removed from our soul; we move farther away from God Himself.

naalay yaar day rosay vaalaa, bhai nahee chukeeNdaa

If we are even somewhat awake, then we would become scared that if I talk negatively about another person, I hope my beloved is not upset with me.

Fear is not lifted; fear of the Divine becoming unhappy starts staying with us. We start feeling weak because we talked negatively. God makes us weak right away.

sun vay manaa nahee-oN, injh vay kareedaa

hothaaN naaloN dil chanaa, vakh nahee kareedaa
