Maharaj ji says come to the place, occupy the place where the truth reveals itself, and that place is very honorable. It's so beautiful! Which is the place that is so honorable that God meets us there?
antar thaan thehraavan ka-o kee-ay.
Maharaj Ji says I have created spaces within you where you can come with the help of the Guru, and I will meet you there. Those places are very honorable because those are the places where God meets us - hirdaa (heart area) and in between the eyebrows are two of those places. We’ll discuss others also. How beautiful!
That’s where I’ll meet you - the space which is so honorable, our meeting place. He says come and occupy that space, so honorable space, which I have designed within you for our meeting. So, please come either at the hirdaa or in between the eyebrows.
Maharaj Ji says that place is so honorable, and that place feels so honorable because that space knows that the owner of the universe comes here to meet someone. We should feel pressure there or some movement, or some presence.
sammHli-aa sach thaan maan mahat sach paa-i-aa bal raam jee-o.
That’s the spot where my Beloved meets me, and I’m a sacrifice to both, to that meeting place as well as to my Beloved. Please stay focused there. If you feel like singing then you can, if not, then just become absorbed in feeling Him.
I have occupied that blessed spot where the truth comes to meet me. And you know how it happened? The True Guru Himself met me.
satgur mili-aa da-i-aal gun abhinaasee gaa-i-aa bal raam jee-o.
The True Guru Himself came to meet me; how merciful he is! da-i-aal - how merciful He is. And He asked me to sing the glories of the Divine. gaa-i-aa - sing. I’m a sacrifice to my Guru too.
gun abinaasee gaa-i-aa bal raam jee-o.
Maharaj Ji is telling us that in order to realize who we are, first of all the True Guru meets us; the Guru has to be a living Guru. Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the Divine light which is the source of life. The Guru has to be alive. The Guru has to be in a body, in a form, and Guru Granth Sahib Ji is that. So, the Guru meets us and He tells us how to meet Him within, and then He lodges us into His womb in order to give us re-birth. Once we are re-sculptured, then He gives us the new birth and that is we are the truth.
Our true self, which is ishq, is full of appreciation. When we are reborn, that is the healthy consciousness, and the healthy consciousness is full of appreciation, while the diseased consciousness is critical, harmful, damaging, wounding, negative.
Maharaj Ji says:
chhateeh amrit jin bhojan dee-ay.
Maharaj Ji says there are 36 families of food I have created for you, for example one family of grains, another family of nuts, another family is vegetables. He says there are thirty six families of food I have created for you.
antar thaan thehraavan ka-o kee-ay.
Then I have created the spaces within you, where I will meet you.
Maharaj Ji says imagine how appreciative you should be, how grateful you should be. But a sleepy consciousness, egoistic consciousness; that’s what we are before the rebirth, egoistic; that cannot appreciate. It wants to be appreciated but not cannot appreciate anything.
Now we must keep watching ourselves, that am I appreciative? Do I appreciate that He has blessed me with a human body? Do I appreciate that He has created so many varieties of food for me? Do I appreciate that He has created spaces within me to meet the lord of the universe? Do I? Really? How can I appreciate that? What can I say? How? Once we become appreciative, that also brings humility.
We must now become very awake to the fact that whatever I say, that sound created within me is going to carry an energy, and it’s going to affect me first; if it’s negative then it’s going to wound my consciousness, and others consciousness too. So, please, we must not let our minds just keep talking all the time. It is such a precarious thing. But when in many hymns, Maharaj Ji scolds us; He says you are like a stone, you never listen, I tell you everyday but you never change. You never listen. You are like a stone, you are foolish. Is He wounding our consciousness? No, He’s waking us up, He’s not hurting us. When a child does something wrong, we have to sometimes use strong words to wake him up, if he’s not changing.
There are four things that impact our consciousness - the spoken word, music, seeing what is written, and pictures. When somebody smiles at us, that’s a positive energy, that’s a healing energy, but what is that? That’s a picture; we see the picture. When somebody frowns at us, even though there is no word spoken, no written word, we become affected. Why? Because we have seen a picture. So, please, we must remain very awake to the fact that others are seeing a picture; I’m a picture. The moment we come home from work, we should become doubly more awake about what I’m going to wear; what should be written on my face when I enter home.
Life is a most sensitive business and most precious opportunity, as well as a dangerous opportunity. It depends upon us, how we take it.
We remain stressed, anxious, anxious. Everybody is talking about stress, anxiety, and that is seen even on our faces. Is that the picture of a healthy consciousness or a wounded consciousness? It’s a picture of a wounded consciousness. Wounded consciousness is anxious, and healthy consciousness is peaceful.
Maharaj Ji says:
simra-o simar simar sukh paava-o.
He says you are wounded, come sit down, become focused, feel the Divine, and you will feel peaceful because the Divine will heal you.
Why is it simra-o simar simar? Why is it repeated? He says feel Him; simar means to feel Him. simra-o, feel Him, simar, go deeper, feel Him more intimately, simar, more deeper, let yourself become absorbed in Him. That peaceful consciousness is ishqful consciousness.
kal kalays tan maahi mitaava-o.
Maharaj Ji says I can see anxiety in you, I can see anger in you. Do meditation and you’ll become peaceful, and the anger in you will be destroyed, imagine.
We should be so appreciative, recognizing how much He cares about me, how much He worries about me, how he makes me tension free, peaceful, how He makes me anger free! Appreciation; appreciation and ishq cannot be separated.
Dhaarnaa:
naa suni-aa jadoN daa ishq tayraa….mayraa ishq banan noo jee kardaa
Ever since I have heard that you are ishq, how I long to be ishq too.
The pain of separation can only originate within us if we recognize what He has been doing and is doing for us. Then we become appreciative and humble. That humble and appreciative consciousness wants to meet the Divine. Otherwise, that pain cannot take place, and without feeling that pain, the urge to meet Him so strongly, the meeting never takes place. Maharaj Ji says this pain is woken up in the holy congregation.
jin kinai paa-i-aa saaDhsangtee poorai bhaag bairaag.
Dhaarnaa (continued)
mahiNgee peerh khareeday jo ishkay noo….oh peerh banan noo jee kardaa
That so dear pain, the pain of separation which makes me meet Him and become ishq, I want to become that pain. Right now I’m just full of anger, stress, and hate. I want to become that pain. Not that I want to have that pain in me, I want to become that pain.
mulaakaatee jagah jo vaykh sakay…..oh akh banan noo jee kardaa
I want to become that eye which can instantly recognize the space where my Beloved comes to meet me. I want to become that eye.
In the third appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, He elaborated more clearly how a seeker who wants to recognize that he is the truth, how his life should be. Even during His first appearance Guru Nanak Dev Ji said that we must wake up very early in the morning. Because it is about realizing the self, the most difficult task a human life can have; it requires discipline, rigid discipline. Those who climb Mount Everest, they come to the foot of that mountain and live there for many months, disciplining themselves, preparing themselves to climb the mountain. In the third appearance, He said that we must wake up very early in the morning, about three hours before sunrise. Then take a shower, go to the holy congregation, do meditation, and sing His glories. If there is no holy congregation where you live then sit in a very isolated, peaceful place. Meditation, singing, and then sharing experiences, sharing each other’s knowledge, trying to understand what Maharaj Ji says in His utterances. Then during the day, keep Him in our consciousness, and earn an honest living. Never look at anybody else who is not your spouse. Never ever touch anything which belongs to somebody else. Go to sleep only when you are very sleepy; sleeping more than what is needed will decrease the lifespan. Eat only what is necessary for the body, and if you eat more than that, then you will be inviting diseases. We will go through this list in the coming days. He says:
(Bhai Gurdas Ji Vaaraan, Pauri 38)
baanee mukhaho uchaaree-ai hu-ay rushnaa-ee mitai aNDhi-aaraa
He said, sing His glories, you will feel the light within you, around you, and the darkness would be dispelled.
(Bhai Gurdas Ji Vaaraan, Pauri 38)
gi-aan gost charchaa sadaa anhad sabad uthay Dhunkaaraa
Then sit with the sangat, and talk about what utterances the Guru uttered today; talk with each other and try to understand those.
We must do it please. Every day, more than once, every time we sit together with a group of four to seven people, things will become more clear to us as we talk about them.
He says if you do these things, then you would start hearing the Celestial Music.
(Bhai Gurdas Ji Vaaraan, Pauri 38)
sodar aartee gaavee-ai amrit vaylay jaap uchaaraa
He says then in the evening, sing his utterances of Sodar - those hymns which say, oh my Beloved, how is your mansion where you live? What types of doors and windows are in your mansion? How do you provide everybody with all their needs? And then sing Aartee, the hymn of worship in the evening. Sing Sodar and Aartee in the evening, and then again get up in the early hours and start with the recitation of Japji Sahib. At that time, the other four baanees of the morning had not been uttered yet. He said, then again get up very early and do meditation, and sing Japji sahib. We will see the rest of the way of daily life which Maharaj Ji showed His disciples.
There is one thing I want to share with you.
I notice that as soon as Anand Sahib starts, half of the sangat gets up and just runs outside, as if there is a fire outside. We have been sitting in meditation in his lap for so long, so how come no deep peace? How come there is no peace? What is there outside? This is our habit, we must change it please, otherwise the transformation is going to be so slow and we don’t have the time. In Langar, there is so much noise which is so surprising to me that how come we did not hear anything that Maharaj Ji was saying.
iknaa no sabh sojhee aa-ee ik firday vayparvaahaa.
fareedaa lokaaN aapo aapnee mai aapnee pa-ee.
Maharaj Ji says some realized that my life is diminishing moment by moment and I was here to do something very important; I have very limited time. Others have no idea and they are going through life carefree.
There was a saint Bhagat Namdev Ji; his songs are in Guru Granth Sahib Ji. He was very poor. One day he was sitting a few hundred yards from his humble house, doing meditation, and his house caught fire. Some people started pouring water on the fire, and some ran to Bhagat Namdev Ji to tell him that his house was on fire. Hearing that, he got up very silently, and walked the usual stable, peaceful walk, without any hurry, and walked to his house. Someone asked Bhagat Ji, you were told your house was on fire, how come you didn’t run to save it. He said, I had filled my insides with Amrit, with divine nectar. I was afraid, if I walked hurriedly, I would spill that nectar. This is appreciation, this is what meditation is about; to gather the nectar and then to remain so alert, not to just scatter it. The moment we just go out and start talking, Amrit is spilled.
When we get up, we should not even open our eyes wide open and look around. No, everything would be lost. Our eyes should remain half shut, and we should only see just in front of us on the floor to walk. We must keep this nectar, accumulate this.
Dhaarnaa:
vaylay…….amrit mathay see tooN lagi-aa…….mahik jihaa…….din langhi-aa
Oh my Beloved, you are the very first one to meet me in the early hours of the morning, and my whole day was spent as if I was in a garden of Divine fragrance.
As we become appreciative, we become humble and our insides become very gentle. Ishq takes birth in the gentlest insides; gentlest, peaceful, appreciative.
vaaNg karoombalaaN andar kujh futi-aa……khauray ishkay nay ghund chuki-aa
I feel like something has germinated within, maybe the ishq is uncovering his face. I feel my insides are becoming very gentle; maybe it’s the ishq who was raising his head.
