The letter from a child of mine from Surrey, B.C. that we have been reading.
Dear Dad, I just wanted to share how I have been since Barsi. After Barsee I felt so much urgency in my heart; I want to run, Maharaj Ji brings me to Darbar Sahib everyday to listen to Khajana Darshan with sangat, He wakes me up at Amrit Vaylaa and takes me to sangat. I feel everything at the hirdaa and feel the Divine presence at all other points simultaneously - bottom of the spine, navel point, hirdaa, back of the head, forehead, above the head.
The moment we open ourselves totally to the Divine, there’s no I or me left within, we go beyond this remembrance of me and mine, and become so absorbed in listening to Him, a miracle happens that whatever Gurbaanee will say that will immediately be experienced by us. That’s the most amazing miracle! If He says that come to the hirdaa, feel peace there, and become peaceful, we would instantly be there and become peaceful. But it takes time because our mind is so attuned to worldly talk, worldly desires, worldly thoughts.
This child of mine says that I feel the presence of the Divine at the lowest point, at the naval point. Please feel Him at the lowest point. Now feel His presence from the lowest point to the naval point, and feel that some power is pulling us upward to the hirdaa.
Maharaj Ji says become focused and feel Him at the hirdaa, then at the back of the head where the neck joins the head.
Before there was no compass, people would stand or sit facing the direction from where the sun rises, and that was called poorab, East. So, their back would be west or pachham. Maharaj Ji says:
pachham du-aarai sooraj tapai.
He says feel my intense presence at the back of your head. If you are totally there, you will feel very intense heat there. He says, at the back door, the sun burns in heat.
Come closer please.
Dhaarnaa:
kayhee jagHaa tapaa-ee vay baalmaa….haumai sarh-dee jaapai
Oh, my Beloved, how did you make that place heated up? I feel my ego is burning; you are burning my ego.
Dhaarna (end)
Please stay there and keep feeling Him.
sachai takhat rachaa-i-aa baisan ka-o jaaN-ee.
The Divine created His creation as His throne to sit upon.
sabh kichh aapay aap hai gur sabad sunaa-ee.
By staying with the Divine, and receiving the true understanding from Him while I am united with Him, He has shown me that it’s just Him, there’s no you. It’s all Him manifesting in so many different forms.
aapay kudrat saajee-an kar mahal saraa-ee.
He has created what we call nature. The human bodies are mansions for Him and He has created a resting place within, for the humans.
We are not man or woman; we are a beautiful thing that was never born and can never die. We are the aatmaa or soul. We never died, there’s no possibility of us dying. We were never born. The circle on the surface of the ocean on which a bubble is formed, that is our soul. The bubble is our body, made of the same stuff as the ocean. When the bubble diffuses, it’s only water that remains, same as the ocean.
He has created a resting place for us within.
chand sooraj du-ay chaannay pooree banat banaa-ee.
He says he created day and night, and he created two lamps, one for the day and one for the night, sun and moon. He says, look how perfect His creation is! One lamp is for the day, and one is for the night.
aapay vaykhai sunay aap gur sabad Dhi-aa-ee.
How beautiful! He says, stay with Him, stay with Him, just stay with Him, remain focused at Him. He says remain united with the Divine, and a day would come when you would recognize it’s not you who is looking, it’s not you who is hearing, it is what is,
Maharaj Ji says about God - He says is. What is God? Is. So, everything is.
hai bhee sach
Who is God - the one who is.
Who am I? - who is not.
But, I am
That’s an idea you are carrying. Someone told you that.
vaahu vaahu sachay paatisaah too sachee naa-ee.
Maharaj Ji says wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, oh my true lord, what a play! What a play, that can only be realized by staying with You. Union with You happens with the word blessed by the Guru. God is to be remembered, to be called, to stay with Him.
First to stay within, we have to remember His name, that helps. When we start feeling Him, then we should start synchronizing with Him, moving in the same direction, same pace, synchronizing.
When we were leaving from New York, a very beautiful soul came to me and said that somebody asked him the other day, you go to the holy congregation twice a day, what are you after? And he said I couldn’t answer that.
Please understand this. Our mind keeps running after so many things, day and night - that may be power, prestige, wealth, love, attachment, fame. Day and night, our mind keeps running after something. To run after something means that thing is outside of us. But here we go within; we are not running after anything. Are we? Here, we enter the inner world. Maharaj Ji says that your body is my mansion; that mansion is deep within our head. He says, your body is my mansion, I dwell there, and I have created a resting place for you at the hirdaa (heart area). Come there, rest there, and I will come to meet you there. What an arrangement!
aapay kudrat saajee-an kar mahal saraa-ee.
So, we don’t run after anything. He has told us a secret that our true self does not run around all the time like the mind. When we realize the true self, we would live our lives then too, we would do our duties, but while permanently staying within the rest house (saraa - means rest house).
And this ‘I’ is running around like crazy. Not like crazy, it is crazy! Day and night, it never stops for a second to rest. What people do to rest, if you call that a rest, which also brings destruction, is they take drugs. Drugs are taken only to make our running mind stop. As soon as our consciousness stops, intoxication happens. So drugs are one way of stopping the consciousness, and here is the true drug. He says wine of truth. So, we must not agree to stay with this mind, restless, unpeaceful.
Dhaarnaa:
ais maiN naal saadaa…..lagdaa nahee dil hun……nee maa-ay sanoo……kaaHlee jihee pavay
I am so uncomfortable with this egoistic I.
bhajee firay raat dinay…..moh atay maa-i-aa pichhay…..kaday vee…..araam naa karay
Day and night, it’s running after attachment which we call love. The whole world is running after love outward, which is not love; love is something else. The whole world is running after love or money or power or fame, which is actually moh.
gagnaaN ch eiHday la-ee…..banaa-ee see saraaN oHnay….pataa kharh kay naa puchhi-aa kaday
Her Beloved has built a rest house for her in the skies, away from the world. Our hirdaa is above the earth in the skies, and our Beloved has built a resting place for us in the skies. But it’s so worked up, running around all the time; it never stops even for a moment to inquire about that space, to inquire if there is any place to rest. No, it never inquires. It never stops to know the address of that rest house.
Dhaarnaa (end)
We are looking at Siddha Gosht, uttered by Guru Nanak Dev Ji in His first appearance, and the time during His third appearance. This hymn is from Ramkalee Kee Vaar. Kabeer Sahib, a saint, whose utterances are in Guru Granth Sahib Ji, says:
kabeer mahidee kar kai ghaali-aa aap peesaa-ay peesaa-ay.
tai sah baat na puchhee-aa kabhoo na laa-ee paa-ay.
He says, oh my Lord, I worked so hard on myself, that I grounded myself into a henna paste. I became cruel to myself, I did not care about any comforts, any pleasures, anything. I grounded myself into a henna paste, and oh my lord, you never cared for that. You never looked at that, and you never applied me to your feet. Kabeer Sahib Ji complains to God by saying this, and tomorrow we will see what Guru Nanak Dev Ji answers to Kabeer Sahib during Maharaj Ji’s third appearance.
kabeer mahidee kar kai ghaali-aa aap peesaa-ay peesaa-ay.
tai sah baat na puchhee-aa kabhoo na laa-ee paa-ay. ||1||
Kabir sahib is complaining to God: I had heard you are so tender hearted, you are ishq, but to me, you are something else. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says yes, He is tender hearted, but here is the mistake you are making. Then Maharaj Ji corrects him. We will ponder over that tomorrow.
A letter that we started reading from a very wise soul from Bulandpuri Sahib. Let’s read some more lines from the writer:
daroo ik hai…..dukhaaN mayri-aaN daa…..charan Dhoorh jo paavan akseer tayree
mayraa sir hovay….tayree go-d hovay….hovay is taraaNh sajan aakheer mayree
maiN fakeer nahee…..kujh nahee kol mayray……bhaytaa rakhi-aa dil dilgeer tayree
I’m just a poor person, I have nothing. I have brought my poor heart to offer you.
aapnay charnaaN vich abhayd kar lai……saahibaa badal kay injh takdeer mayree
mainoo aas hai tooN paseej jaanaa…..karunaa dayaa hai baynazeer tayree
I know that You are so tender hearted and so forgiving and merciful, that You are going to merge me with Yourself.
hanjhoo dulHday vaykh kay dul painee….mihar nadar dee gunee gaheer tayree
And looking at my falling tears, Your mercy is going to fall upon me. I know that.
How beautiful!
Now, Siddh Gosht.
kit biDh purkhaa janam vataa-i-aa.
kaahay ka-o tujh ih man laa-i-aa.
kit biDh aasaa mansaa khaa-ee.
Siddhas are asking Maharaj Ji, how have you become desireless? How come you are not running after anything? Where is your mind? What is your mind doing? How come there are no desires in it?
kit biDh jot nirantar paa-ee.
How have you become the Divine light?
bin dantaa ki-o khaa-ee-ai saar.
Siddhas are saying what you have accomplished is so arduous, so difficult, almost impossible. It’s like eating iron with a toothless jaw.
naanak saachaa karahu beechaar.
Siddhas are saying to Maharaj Ji, please tell us the real truth, please tell us the real secret. How have you reached where you are? Please tell us the truth behind this, the true secret.
Maharaj Ji will reveal that secret tomorrow.
For the new sangat: please focus on hearing. This is not singing from the mind. This is different. Singing from the mind does not make any difference. We will slowly learn this singing by coming to sangat. This singing makes one meet the Divine. Maharaj Ji says:
gaa-o gaa-o ree dulhanee mangalchaaraa.
He says, keep singing my utterances and God will make you His bride.
So, please keep hearing. Hearing has a very high reward. Maharaj Ji says:
suntay puneet kahtay pavit satgur rahi-aa bharpooray.
He says that by hearing one’s consciousness becomes holy (puneet). Hearing is a very high state of consciousness. Let’s please hear with peaceful insides. Let’s make our insides peaceful by putting out the fire of anger, greed, lust, ego, and attachment that the mind keeps us burning in.
Dhaarnaa:
nee baag maa-ay sajanaa daa….. jeeHday vich dunee, maiN, tay oh aap
His creation is His garden; garden of ishq.
jay jarh hovay vich ishkay……baydard vaa vee naa karay baykhumaar
If our roots are planted in the Divine, in other words in ishq, then even the unfriendly times cannot make us waver.
Our roots can either be in our own world or in the Divine. If we keep having thoughts about our own world then our roots are there. Here, we are rooting ourselves in the Divine.
If we are planted in Him, in ishq, then even the unfriendly waves cannot shake us, cannot make us de-intoxicated.
