I had the illusion that true peace, true love, real contentment, real deep inner happiness, and freedom can be had from outside through creating relationships with other people, amassing money, or becoming famous, but it was just an illusion. I have tried everywhere, I have tried every person, I have tried every way, I searched everywhere but these things are not available outside. This hymn is by Guru Nanak Dev Ji Maharaj during His third appearance. If we sing His utterances while becoming totally awake and feeling within, the vibrations which His utterances create, instant intoxication, instant transportation to the land beyond the mind happens.

so saho saaNt na dayv-ee ki-aa chalai tis naal.

Maharaj Ji says the Divine has all these blessings which you need to live this life and celebrate it, but you never went to Him to get those. So, don’t blame anybody. You never went to Him so how would you have received those blessings - real contentment, real peace, true sacred love, bliss, freedom from the chains of the mind.

Please recognize how close He comes to us when He talks to us. He wants us to be that way too, when we sing His songs and hear Him. He has written all these songs; I call them His love letters to me. He wrote all these love letters with infinite ishq for me and I must also read these, sing these, remaining in the same space of ishq.

Dhaarnaa:

sun vay manaa nahee-oN …..injh vay kareedaa

khat sunan lagi-aaN ……paraaN nahee kharheedaa

Maharaj Ji is teaching us how to live and celebrate human life. It’s not that we don’t do this but still we should be very mindful that this is just for me.

We were talking about the Kennedy family and how Rose Kennedy raised her children. Rose Kennedy once said: Whenever I held my newborn baby in my arms, I used to think that what I said and did to him would have an influence not only on him, but all whom he meets; not only for a day or a month or a year, but for all eternity - a very very challenging and exciting thought by a mother feeling the duty. Rose became such a natural and determined teacher of her children, leading them by discovery, stories, examples, and inspiration to fulfill their own destinies.

In the world, someone who is fortunate may do these things by understanding them, but this is the nature of our true self. We don’t have to do anything special; once we become our true self, then whatever happens from that true self will be the best.

Rose engaged her children in conversations about having and keeping faith in Jesus Christ. When guests visited their home, she expected her children to ask questions and offer opinions. Even though the family was wealthy, the children were expected to fix their bicycles and were required to earn their own pocket money.

I was saying why Indian people are so successful in western countries and get established so easily and so soon. The first secret is their deep belief and deep love of God, that He is with me and He wants me to succeed. Secondly, right from childhood we are taught to work; work in the fields, or work in the shop. To create the habit of working hard is something children in these western countries are lacking. They only go to school and have nothing else to do. They have so much time on their hands and so much energy in them, so it is going to create problems. It is very important that we teach our kids to work from a young age; give them chores to do at home such as growing vegetables in the backyard, and so on.

Rose made her children very self-confident and self-assured. She would dress all children with similar clothes so they would feel a part of the family unit. She expected her kids to be self-confident adults and independent thinkers with compassion for those less fortunate.

All these concepts are so wise and we can learn from them. It is most important that we love children, teach them Gurbani, tell them Maharaj Ji’s stories and accounts, and teach them discipline. If there is no discipline, then it is not love. There are two things in love - bhai (fear out of love, respect) and bhaa-o (love, affection, warmth). Day before yesterday, Maharaj Ji told us that one cannot go deep into meditation without fear. For meditation, or for accomplishing anything big in life, both fear and love are important. Maharaj Ji says, if you love someone, and they have no fear, no respect, then they are not going to understand the love. Children should have fear, respect; fear alone is not good either, and having no fear and just love alone will spoil them as well. Discipline is vital; children should know how to be respectful. These are important things that we face everyday in life. We should not postpone these things but start them right away. Right from a young age, I had a habit. Anytime I read or heard something wise, right away I would implement it in my life. Otherwise the mind does not change.

Revisiting that letter from a child of mine: From the lowest point, to the navel point, hirdaa, forehead, top of the head, at the back of the head, Maharaj Ji’s presence is felt simultaneously. For the first time, it seriously feels like it’s now or never. If one day of sangat is missed, my inside feels so sad and discontent that I have lost something most precious today. I used to think these things were depression and insomnia but now I know they are blessings. Everything feels new, fresh. Whenever I feel angry, instantly I pray to Him and my insides become peaceful. I remain rooted within my Beloved, in my heart, and uprooted from the mind. Everything happens just by Him and whatever he does feels so sweet, whatever it is.

Thank you, dear child, for sharing this.

Please maintain a very loving and peaceful environment in our homes. It happens automatically; we just have to remain united with the Divine.

Dhaarnaa:

nigh pi-aaraaN daa androN maan-daa raheeN……vaDh-dee umar noo rakhay naveen jih-rhaa

If we remain rooted in Him, centered within, then we feel His ishq for us, that warmth; our insides literally feel warm. That inner warmth of love keeps us young even when we are getting out of the youthful years.

Maharaj Ji says:

gur parsaadee har Dhi-aa-ee-ai antar rakhee-ai ur Dhaar.

Maharaj Ji says, it is going to happen only with His grace. Keep begging for His grace and remain within, keeping the sacred word in your consciousness, as the seashell takes a drop of water within and transforms that into a pearl.

naanak ghar baithi-aa saho paa-i-aa jaa kirpaa keetee kartaar.

He says, remain within and the Divine will bless you. The things that you need - real peace, true love, real freedom, true contentment - He will bless you with those gifts from within.

nigh pi-aaraaN daa androN maan-daa raheeN……vaDh-dee umar noo rakhay naveen jih-rhaa

Stay with the Divine. Even though your body will age, you will remain fresh, new.

javaan jazbay tay surat vay rahin dovayN…..os nigh dee karay sambhaal jih-rhaa

If we remain united with Him, who is ever youthful, ever fresh, ever new, then we remain the same way. How simple it is!

If we remain attached to the outside world where everything is becoming old by the day, so shall we. If we don’t live the way we are supposed to live; the way the Divine has designed us to live, then  we are definitely going to become cranky, always complaining, resenting.

Dhaarnaa (end)

We are looking at the way of life Guru Nanak Dev Ji taught to humanity during His third appearance.

Guru Kaa Jandi-aalaa is a village on the GT Road heading towards Taran Taaran Sahib. The Hindaal family from this village were devotees of the Guru but later they committed a sin during the time of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Guru Angad Dev Ji, the second Guru Nanak, had compiled the saakhee (first hand accounts) from Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s time as told by His companion, Bala Ji. Bhai Hindaal tore that saakhee and threw it in the Beas river, and replaced it with a manufactured version in which he claimed that Guru Sahib had given all powers to the Hindaal family. But that was during the fifth appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. We are now talking about the time of Guru Amar Das Ji, the third appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Bhai Hindaal had a brother, Bhai Dayal Ji. Bhai Dayal’s daughter was engaged and they went to a Pandit (Hindu scholar, astrologer) to find out an auspicious time for the marriage.; it was a ritual back then for people to go to Pandits and find out the month, day, time that was most auspicious for an event. Other than Sikhs, this practice is still very prevalent in India. Bhai Dayal Ji did not visit the Pandit otherwise and only went to find out the auspicious time for the wedding. The Pandit was very angry and told him: why don’t you ask your Guru to tell you an auspicious time? Can’t he do it? Bhai Dayal Ji came back and went directly to Goindwal Sahib to Guru Amar Das Ji and told Him what had happened. At that time, the construction seva of Gurudwara Baoli Sahib was happening and Bhai Jetha Ji (who later became Guru Ram Das Ji, the fourth appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji) was supervising the seva. Guru Amar Das Ji sent a message and called Bhai Jetha Ji and sent them with Bhai Dayal Ji with the following instructions: in the morning, after the recitation of Asa Dee Vaar,  recite Moolmantar, then recite Japji Sahib, followed by recitation of the hymns of LaavaaN; hymns of LaavaaN describe the process of a soul-bride’s marriage with the Divine. This followed by reading of the chhant:

ਰਾਗੁ ਸੂਹੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ਘਰੁ

raag soohee chhant mehlaa 1 ghar 4.

jin kee-aa tin daykhi-aa jag DhanDh-rhai laa-i-aa.

daan tayrai ghat chaannaa tan chand deepaa-i-aa.

After reading this chhant, recite the six stanzas of Anand Sahib, do Ardaas and complete the wedding ceremony. This is the most auspicious time.

Since then, this custom has been practiced for Sikh marriage ceremonies. Later, with lots of effort, Sikhs were able to get the Anand Marriage Act enacted into law on October 22, 1909. The Anand Marriage Act recognized the practice of the Sikh way of marriage. It’s written in the Indian constitution that this is how Guru Nanak Dev Ji told how to perform the wedding ceremony. This Act brought so much transformation in Indian society. Before this, a widow could not get married in India. This Act legalized the marriage of widows.

Dhaarnaa:

Now, all those sangats who are ever present in my thoughts but could not come here, this is for them.

koloN langh-dee-ay nee vaa-ay….saaday sajanaa noo saadaa salaam aakhanaa

nit maNg-day haaN tayree-aaN khairaaN……vaylay subah shaam aakhanaa

Oh, the wind blowing by me, please take this message to all my friends; convey my bowing down to them; tell them that I am praying for them day and night.

rakheeN barkataaN vaalee-aaN akhee-aaN…….tay dil shukraan aakhanaa

Please make sure there are blessings in your eyes wherever you look and also keep your heart full of gratitude for Him, for everybody, whosoever you meet on this path of life. Wherever you pass by, bless everybody silently, everything, every place.
