To all of you who I feel are mine, the feeling of gratitude for your coming and being here is overwhelming.
Dhaarnaa:
aa nee Dhee-ay raanee-ay tayray sadkay jaavaaN
Maharaj Ji says:
paav suhaavay jaaN ta-o Dhir julday sees suhaavaa charnee.
Beautiful are those feet which walk towards You; beautiful is that head which falls at Your Feet. He says those feet which walk towards my Beloved are so so precious, so beautiful!
tayray charnee saadaa sees nee…..chalan gaibee raahaaN
To go from one place to another in the world, the path is visible but the inner path is hidden. And your feet that walk that hidden path to the Beloved, are so beautiful. I place my head on your beautiful feet.
Dhaarnaa (end)
We have gathered here for a purpose. It is difficult to understand this. He says:
jan naanak ih khayl kathan hai kinhooN gurmukh jaanaa.
Those who understand that they have to climb Mount Everest, camp over a year in advance, practice climbing everyday, learn new skills everyday so they can be successful. So, those of us who are very clear about the path we want to walk on, the doors open for them only.
Maharaj Ji says that this is an arduous task. This play of ishq with Him is so arduous that the rare ones who surrender to the Guru, remain surrendered to Him and keep walking the path; many would start but very few will arrive. This must stay with us day and night - what I am up to, what hurdles I am facing, and I must climb the inner Mount Everest on which my Beloved dwells.
Maharaj Ji says:
gur naanak jin suni-aa paykhi-aa say fir garbhaas na pari-aa ray.
Gurbani says that to whomsoever Guru Nanak Dev Ji becomes heard, that person will also behold Him, and will be liberated for sure. Those who can hear Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s utterances; we can imagine it must be so difficult. We recite Gurbani everyday but we still don’t remember because it does not get heard. In order to hear Him, our consciousness must have risen up to a certain height, getting out of the blind well. Otherwise there is no chance of ever hearing Him. We remain in the false understanding that I go to sangat everyday, I sit in the sangat, and listen to keertan. No! Nothing gets listened.
kot barahmand ko thaakur su-aamee sarab jee-aa kaa daataa ray.
The Divine is the Creator, Lord, and Master of countless universes. He is the Lord and Master of everyone. Can we have any concept of this? No! How can this become heard?
The consciousness must be in a certain state to hear Him, where it becomes free of all the thoughts. If we feel this is a question of my life and death, then we have the chance. People go to all the different Guru’s in the world. What happens? Innocent people are looking for easy ways. But there is no easy way, and should not be. Otherwise God would be living in a very crowded place (Baba Ji laughs). We must remain very conscious of the fact that I am not happy with this state of being. I don’t feel content, I don’t feel loving enough, I don’t feel humble enough; I am not happy. It’s another thing that I show a different face to the world but I cannot escape myself.
Dhaarnaas are easier to understand and help us in understanding Gurbani.
Dhaarnaa:
vay dinay chain nahee-oo aa-ouNdaa raatee…..neeNd nahee-o aa-ouNdee
I cannot feel peaceful enough and at night I cannot go to sleep like a baby.
vay koolee rut see baageeN…….asaaN nahee see pachhaanee
This season of being in a human body and having a human consciousness was so beautiful, so tender but I did not recognize it.
vay keem….jag dee-aaN akhee-aaN choN…..aapnee see jaanee
I always looked into the eyes of others and tried to value myself; how they think I am, who they think I am.
What a game we are playing with the self! We do everything for others - we dress for others, we walk for others, we talk for others, so that others can tell me that I am so lucky and I start believing deeply that I am so lucky. What a game we are playing with the self!
Please reflect on this, contemplate. It takes time to write these things. They come from a place of feeling others’ pain; may someone hear them.
Maharaj Ji says:
sukh dukh rahat sadaa nirlaypee jaa ka-o kahat gusaa-ee.
so tum hee meh basai nirantar naanak darpan ni-aa-ee.
Maharaj Ji says God is dwelling within you like a mirror. If you want to see how you look, then look into that mirror. Don’t look into the eyes of the world to know how successful or how lucky you are; look in the mirror within.
vay kidaa….chhaani-aa kamal…..kar darpan see maahee
What a fool I have been and I am, that I have been looking into the eyes of the world to find my value.
tay naa hee peetaa vay ishak…..jih-rhaa mayraa see haanee
You had created me, ishq. Nor did I drink the ishq that was my age.
Maharaj Ji says:
saaDh milai saaDhoo janai santokh vasai gur bhaa-ay.
Maharaj Ji says that if you meet a True Guru, He will make you true. If we have been born out of God, which we are going through the process, then we must be God too. But not God, as in stay away, I am God, God is coming. No! God, where you remain nothing, not even the dust of your feet.
We must understand why it is difficult. Actually it is not difficult. If a father hides and asks the child to find him, it is not possible that the father creates a way that is impossible for the child to find him. Is it possible? It’s not the path which is arduous. When Maharaj Ji says this path is most arduous, what does He really mean? What He really means is that no one stops to see who I am! No one hears what Maharaj Ji is saying because if they hear it then everything they have will be lost. To hear Gurbaanee is the most dangerous thing. Why? The one who hears Gurbaanee, immediately he or she will see that I have no mother, father, sister, brother, spouse, city, house, no support - the story is completely different! This is the reason why we don’t want to hear Gurbaanee. It’s the riskiest thing in human life to hear His utterances because it’s going to take all our lies away from us, it’s going to take all our supports away from us, it’s going to take away all our security away from us, it’s going to make us naked - supportless, alone! Must be a brave one who would hear His utterances then, knowing what is going to happen to them.
Rabindra Nath Tagore was a world famous mystic, philosopher, and genius. He also composed the national anthem of India. One time someone said, Mr. Tagore, you have written such a beautiful national anthem, why don’t you compose an aartee for the Divine. He said, nothing more can be said beyond what Guru Nanak Dev Ji has said in the aartee; what am I going to write! He heard His utterances; He had learnt how to hear.
In another account, he says that I sought guidance from a sadhu, I meditated, and I reached the house of the Divine. I saw that on the door it was written that God lives here. I became very scared; I am not going to knock on the door, lest He comes out and pulls me inside. I took of my shoes and ran away with very light feet. I did not have the courage to knock on His door. Why? Because all that he had created in his own world would have been lost. This is from someone who is worshiped by others in the world. He was given the highest prize in the world. So, this story is arduous. We do not want to hear His utterances because if we hear then what would happen if I don’t recognize my family, my children; what if I meet someone on the way and bring them home and tell them this is not just my home, it belongs to everyone. We do not want to hear! Whatever little effect we have while we are here in the deewan, we revert back to the same old conversations when we go outside. Why? So, whatever we have heard may not settle within, we want to forget it. That’s why it has taken so many years; that’s why he composed four stanzas on hearing (suni-ai) in Japji Sahib.
We really do not want to hear His utterances because they show us the truth that you are naked. Nobody is yours, no place, nothing belongs to you in this world. This is what you are.
We are celebrating the Divine light which descended on this Earth and boldly declared that it is all God. People called him crazy, one who misleads; people said he misleads you, he takes you astray, he says you cannot divide humanity into religions or castes; he is crazy but the unfortunate thing is he does not know he is crazy.
ko-ee aakhai bhootnaa ko kahai baytaalaa.
Maharaj Ji says people used to call me a ghost, and some would say look at him he doesn’t even know how to walk straight.
ko-ee aakhai aadmee naanak vaychaaraa.
And some would say, poor Nanak, he is crazy but he doesn’t know he is crazy.
These are things Maharaj Ji says Himself and are inked in Guru Granth Sahib. He would go to many villages and people would shut their doors and say that nobody should see him. Only one person would open the door and Maharaj Ji would go into that house. Imagine the degree of rejection; the world rejected him outrightly. Why? Because people did not want to hear the truth.
Japji Sahib is the very first baanee (composition of utterances) which is inked in the beginning of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. That baanee is so profound. We are going to start this Dhaarnaa asking the wind: O wind, you must have seen when the Japji was uttered and the universe listened to Japji Sahib. Tell me something about that moment. This dhaarnaa is a conversation about the wind, that you are the very first one who experienced the vibrations of Japji Sahib, and ever since you have been carrying those vibrations to everyone. Tell me about the vibrations you felt when you heard Japji Sahib.
Please sit alone and contemplate on this.
Dhaarnaa:
sun araj nee vaa-ay….vagadee-ay…..aa baith dilay day…..paas nee
O the blowing wind, kindly mercifully hear my plea. Stop and sit beside my heart. I want to ask you about Japji Sahib.

When Japji Sahib was born, you were the midwife. Tell me about that moment.
