For the past twenty-seven years we have been hearing Guru Nanak Dev Ji and still want more, more, more; want more. Please understand this. We want more, it’s not our need. He already told us what was needed. There are two things - want and need. Our lives get spent in wanting, not going for what we need, because what we need is already provided by Him to all His creation. We waste our lives in wanting.
In the beginning of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, Maharaj Ji says ੴ (ik oaNkaar) - that there is one supreme power. You can call Him God, Allah, Waheguru, Divine, Dios; you can call Him any name. He says this space is He Himself, all the creation in it is He Himself; there is no second thing. If this thing alone, ੴ, can be heard and understood that I am living in the one I am searching for; I am sitting in God, I am standing in God, I am eating in God, I am laughing while I am in God, I sleep inside God, all around me is God - ੴ. If this thing alone can be kept in our consciousness continuously, this awakens us and slowly makes us realize it’s all Him. Then one day we also start recognizing that this me is not me; this is Him too. And the game is over, the game is won, and our purpose of being on this planet is achieved. It’s so simple, so small! But time and again, we may hear it from Him hundred times a day but we don’t remain awake to this truth. We keep running after dreams.
Please focus at the hirdaa.
Somewhere He says that the Divine is like an infinite ocean. Then He becomes afraid that we would start thinking that the ocean remains there all the time; there is no excitement in being the ocean. Then He says He is like a river and we all are like fish in the river. The river keeps moving, keeps creating new things every moment, every day. Then He says, you are going to think the river is no big deal, it’s only so wide. So He says, He is neither like the ocean nor like the river, He is not like this or that or that….no, no, no. What He is cannot be described.
Maharaj Ji says:
too daree-aa-o daanaa beenaa mai machhulee kaisay ant lahaa.
daanaa - one who know everything.
beenaa - one who is seeing everything.
You are like a river and I am a fish in it. Everything is within You and You know everything what is within you, and you are seeing everything that is happening within everybody. He says one can figure out how deep, how long, or how wide a river is but the river I am talking about is beyond these things, and me, a little fish, I can never know Him.
jah jah daykhaa tah tah too hai tujh tay niksee foot maraa.
Everywhere, everything is You; simply You, period! It’s another thing we don’t see this but in order to see that we need meditation. We must remember why we do meditation. If that remains in our consciousness, immediately we will make so much progress on this path. Otherwise we will be stuck that this experience happened to me or that experience happened to me. The purpose was something else. Those experiences are well and good but we can fall asleep under the illusion that I have reached somewhere.
tujh tay niksee foot maraa.
If I am taken out of You, I cannot exist. If we are taken out of God; the space is God; if somehow we can be taken out of God, we cannot exist. That’s what He is saying. If I am taken out of You, I will die instantly. I am within You all the time. How deep of a sleep I am in that even after hearing so many times, I don’t remember this.
Yesterday, a young child in their late twenties came to me and said that I have heard that there is going to be another marriage on December 7th. I was going to leave tomorrow; can I stay here until December 7? Please see where we are stuck. We are here for Purab, to grasp something so precious; we are not going to stay for that but for a marriage. This is not just the story of one mind, it represents all of our minds. Is it a need to see the wedding? No, it’s a want, a desire. That’s what Maharaj Ji is saying. He or she doesn’t need to; it’s not her need to attend that wedding ceremony. It’s a desire, a want.
ੴ is Baleyo Charaag. Please understand. Maharaj Ji says ੴ is the Divine lamp lit up. ੴ is not a dead word; it’s alive with the energy, with all the virtues of God. It’s alive, it’s burning, it’s glowing! ੴ is the glowing lamp, full of God’s virtues, full of God’s presence.
Dhaarnaa:
bali-aa nee maa-ay……bali-aa vay lokoN
chiraag husan daa……bali-aa vay lokoN
O my mother, O the world, Divine Lamp has lit up; the Divine Lamp of ishq, of beauty, of splendor.

kidee tapasi-aa is raat dee……jug jug rakhoo jag…..yaad vay lokoN
In the thick darkness, ੴ, the Divine Lamp lit up; in the pitch darkness, in the night! But how blessed is this night; this night must have worshiped Him for only God knows how many ages, that the Divine decided to light up this Lamp. Only God knows how many ages that night had spent in worshiping Him and He lit up the Lamp. The whole of humanity will remember this day in 1469 as long as the play is on.

kithoN li-aavaaN anjamay akhar…..svaagataaN la-ee jo….bolaaN vay lokoN
Where from should I bring the words that have not been born, which can never take birth, that they are high enough, deep enough, big enough, true enough, that with those words I welcome the Divine Lamp.

laagan - means the ones who distribute the news to everyone.
In the whole world today, in every country, somewhere or another winds are taking this blessed news to every place in the world that this was the day in 1469 when the Divine Lamp was lit up. What should I offer to the wind for relaying such a beautiful message? This message is spreading in the entire world.

Dhaarnaa (end)
Queen Elizabeth II of England who passed away recently said:
The message of Guru Nanak is universal, promoting sincere mutual love, tolerance, understanding, and unity among the entire humanity.
She says all humanity can come together, thus ending all the conflict and wars.
Please understand this one small thing.
If we understand the nature of want, desire due to which we waste our lives; if we understand that, then a very precious key to the secrets of human life is given to us. Guru Nanak Dev Ji says:
na jaanaa may-o na jaanaa jaalee.
may-o - means fisherman
jaal - means net.
Maharaj Ji says I know nothing about the fisherman and I know nothing about the nets. All I know is that fisherman and net make me unpeaceful and make me forget about my self and my Beloved. What is He talking about?
It’s so hard to understand Gurbaanee.
He says our minds are fishermen; they are always out there fishing, not what they need but what they want. Please understand this. Isn’t this what we do all the time? Please look. He shows us the mirror. He says you are the mind right now. Actually you are not the mind, you are the Divine, but your mind is always out there fishing, throwing baits; always! There is no need for fish, but it’s the desire.
jaa dukh laagai taa tujhai samaalee.
I become unpeaceful and run towards my Beloved! How innocent! How
profound! This is ishq! This is God! So simple yet so profound.
The other day I was telling my daughters that right now you are thinking that my mind is occupied with marriage that’s why I can’t focus and once the marriage happens then there won’t be any worry and I would be free to meditate. But Maharaj Ji says marriage is not the reason you can’t focus, it’s because of your mind, the fisherman! Once the marriage happens, there won’t be any desire for marriage, but the desire will move on and now there will be desire for other things. Marriage is not the problem. The problem is the mind, the fisherman who is not going to stop fishing after marriage, who is not going to quit having new desires and wants; those are going to be there. Marriage is not the solution to becoming more focused.
jaa dukh laagai taa tujhai samaalee.
Maharaj Ji says, when this happens to me, when the fisherman throws a net and I find myself unpeaceful, I run to my Beloved. This fisherman makes me forget about my self and my Beloved and all I get in return is peacefulness and worries.
How simply He explains it to us in two lines, that this is the story if you understand it. If you chose not to understand then that is up to you.
na jaanaa may-o na jaanaa jaalee.
I don’t want to know much about the fisherman, the mind; that’s not my concern. All I know is that it takes me away from my Beloved, it makes me worried, tense, stressful, and I run to my Beloved.
He is saying the solution of living human life is to remain awake about the self and with your Beloved. Otherwise marriage or no marriage, millionaire or no millionaire, life is going to remain full of worries, stress, misery.
na jaanaa may-o na jaanaa jaalee.
jaa dukh laagai taa tujhai samaalee.
The only thing my mind does is keep fishing and thus keeping me separated from my Beloved, worried, and I have known this thing. I have also known that as soon as this fisherman separates me from my Beloved, I run back to my Beloved. How beautiful! Right away I run back to my Beloved. How simple! How beautiful!
To marry or not to marry is not the question. The question is - you know now!
too bharpoor jaani-aa mai door.
Everywhere it’s You - this space is You, these people are You, the flowers are You, the grass is You, the bricks are You; this is all You! But I am thinking you are somewhere far away in the skies. No!
The moment we recognize that my mind has brought me back to the river to fish, we should become worried. Desire! Whatever we are running after is not our need, it’s our desire. When the desire is there, we go to sleep and in sleep we suffer. When the desire is not there, we are one with God, blissful, peaceful, so beautiful! It’s a straightforward formula - whoever understands it - ੴ.
One time someone went to a sadhu and said, I recite Japji Sahib a hundred times a day and I want to recite it 150 times a day. The sadhu said you are way ahead of me; please go and ask someone else. But the person insisted. The sadhu said, I am telling you the truth, you are way ahead; you can recite Japji Sahib 100 times a day and I remain stuck at ੴ.
Those who get to know the beauty, the splendor, the glory of ੴ, this would solve all our problems, it would make us recognize our true self and the Divine.
Dhaarnaa:
charaag-e-ishq jo…..bali-aa aap aakay
ੴ is the divinely lamp, lit up with truth and it’s God Himself who is manifesting through ੴ. Maharaj Ji gave this word, ੴ, and told the people that in this ੴ, is the Divine, and everything is Divine - simple!
charaag-e-ishq jo…..bali-aa aap aakay
God Himself became this lamp, ੴ.
jalaal oHdaa naa kaday vee kam honaa
The awe inspiring ੴ - it’s grandeur, it’s majesty is never going to lessen throughout the ages. As long as the mankind will be there, it is going to be the guiding lamp.
When we sing, the fisherman cannot come near us.
At the university there is going to be a monument of ੴ, about 200 ft high, just to remind everybody from far away, what this is - that we live in God, it’s all God, there is no “I”, it’s God too! Strangely enough, in 2008 when the sangat was going to Hazur Sahib, this was ordered on the 300th anniversary of the day when Guru Nanak Dev Ji disappeared after appearing in ten bodies - that’s when it was ordered that the monument must be built.
Time is flying. It doesn’t care about anybody, it doesn’t wait for anybody, it keeps flying. We must learn to live awakened, to live within God.
