This week, starting from today, is perhaps the most cruel in the history of mankind because on today’s date, 24th December in 1704, Singhs were martyred at Chamkaur Sahib. When Guru Nanak Dev Ji in His tenth appearance left Anandpur Sahib, along with 40 Sikhs He fought against an army of 1,000,000 of the Indian state.
Maharaj Ji does not want us to become sad. No parent would want their children to become sad. But He wants us to learn from His courage; courage of our Father. 40 Singhs on one side and 1,000,000 on the other side, and the Singhs are surrounded from every direction.
There will be ups and downs in life, and there should be otherwise life won’t be life. If water stands in one place, it cannot be fresh, it cannot have the nature of creating life. We must learn. We don’t have to face those types of situations. We should always remember that this problem is nothing compared to that; and our problems are really nothing.
Again and again I become stuck at the very first stanza of Japji Sahib in which He reveals the nature of human’s mind.
sochai soch na hova-ee jay sochee lakh vaar.
He says you can never eradicate your real problem through thinking and doing something about that problem on the outside.
sochai means thinking and another meaning is pure. If you have heard that pure consciousness is peaceful, then know that you cannot purify your consciousness yourself.
bhukhi-aa bhukh na utree jay bannaa puree-aa bhaar.
No matter what you have in human life, you can never become peaceful. How strange!
When we are young, we mostly think about marriage and jobs. Do we feel peaceful after that? No! Now, you have to buy a house, raise children, their education - we can never become peaceful. We go through life and these things happen to us but we keep doing it again and again. The most amazing thing perhaps is that the Divine tells us you can never become peaceful in life, no matter what you have; no matter how influential, or how powerful, or how beautiful, or how wealthy. No matter what, you are going to remain thirsty, hungry, and unpeaceful. Man is so intelligent, so well-educated, so influential, so clever, so wise and he never understands this simple truth about life. Never! We are those people! He tells us this simple thing in the first stanza of Japji Sahib. We should become so amazed at our stubbornness, to put it politely. Stubbornness! We know the medicine; the medicine is right in front of us. In every moment, He puts that medicine in front of us but we turn our face either to the left or to the right - no, no, no, tomorrow.
mayraa baid guroo govindaa.
He says your physician, your medicine is the Divine, and every moment brings that medicine to you. But we don’t take the medicine. We have not adopted the habit of going deep into whatever we see or feel. We remain on the surface - superfluous intelligence, superfluous thoughts, superfluous temporary solutions.
When I ask you to please sit in groups and ponder deeply over His utterances. Usually when we sit in those gatherings, we don’t go deep into that thought. We consciously say something, keeping in mind that I want to look good in these people’s eyes. What a way of cheating the self!
We have been doing paath and coming to Gurudwara Sahib for so long but we haven’t understood the first stanza of Japji Sahib. Perhaps we have been doing this for many lifetimes;
I don’t think this is our first lifetime walking this path. We must be on this journey in our previous lives; the momentum of that propelled us into this. Please, life is too precious to waste any moment. Too precious!
His utterances are so powerful; He calls it arrows of love. Those arrows are so potent but somehow, every time we manage not to be struck with those arrows; we have become very clever. And we show off to people that I go to Darbar Sahib every day.
By now our lives should have become nothing but a celebration; a celebration without any cause; a celebration in itself. By now our insides should have become all laughter, all light, all ishq, carefree.
Why do we accept to keep living in the same way as we did yesterday? Why? Didn’t we learn anything from yesterday?
He gives us the most beautiful, the simplest way to realize that we are a celebration. He says just sing my utterances and hear your sound, that’s all! That will bring you in the present, and in the present your presence is the presence of God. He says if you come in the present, there will be no “I’, me, mine; then your presence will be the presence of God. So simple, and such a big thing is right there for us but we don’t care for it. Why? All our sufferings are because of “I”, “me”. When we go to sleep, then we are fully relaxed and we wake up totally fresh, rested. Why? What happened? Because during the sleep, there was no “I”. We were there, we were alive, breathing, heart beating but “I” was not there and we were so peaceful. Why don’t we want to remain in that space? Why come back into the house of suffering again and again and again? After we leave from here (deewaan), the effect will last for about five minutes and then again there will be the same “I”, the same “you”. When His utterances are heard; to whomsoever that happens, one thing will happen for sure with that person - that person will start loving his or her own company, and that’s the real holy congregation. And who will be there in our company? The Divine Himself.
Let’s become focused please and sing His utterances.
dayh sandaysaro kahee-a-o pari-a kahee-a-o.
O’ my dear sister friend, I heard you are His bride. Because you dwell with Him, tell me what is His message for me? Tell me, O dear sister friend, tell me, tell me, tell me soon! Look at it - can we ever become that house of urgency? Why does it not affect us?
kahee-a-o pari-a kahee-a-o.
Please tell me His message for me. He knows that I meet you every day. He must have given you a message for me. Please tell me soon! Such a relationship!
bisam bha-ee mai baho biDh suntay kahhu suhaagan sahee-a-o.
I am wonderstruck hearing numerous fascinating stories about Him; so many beautiful heart melting stories about Him; so many fascinating ways of His!
kahhu suhaagan sahee-a-o.
O my dear friends, His brides, please tell me about Him; tell me what His message is for me. Please tell me!
Please understand the underlying word He used - ਸੁਨਤੇ (suntay) - hearing. He says minds cannot hear me. You have to go beyond your thinking process to hear me. You have to go beyond the mind, beyond the thinking mind, where no thoughts can arise; only then you can hear Me. And only those who can hear Me feel the urgency to meet Me. We constantly remain in the hands of the mind, the thinking. That’s why nothing gets heard by us, nothing gets registered.
Dhaarnaas are just attempts to say His utterances in a very simple language.
Dhaarnaa:
samaa ay jo aa-i-aa…..hai aj shaamaaN bankay……ay vaslaaN day chaavaaN…..naal bhari-aa pi-aa hai
O my dear friends, this time which is before us as an evening time, is filled with opportunity, is filled with the joy of His union. It’s not just some time; no time is cheap. This time, which God has presented to us, is full of joyous opportunity to unite with our Beloved, who is right within us.
hunay hunay laNghi-aa…….jo gagan gulaabee….o khoon aashikee daa….dikhaaNdaa rihaa hai
When the skies are clear and the sun sets, just before setting it scatters the most beautiful shades of red and pink colors in the skies. That color which the setting sun filled the skies with, was the color of the blood of ishq.
samaa ay jo aa-i-aa…..hai aj shaamaaN bankay……ay vaslaaN day chaavaaN…..naal bhari-aa pi-aa hai
Every moment, during all our lives, brings God to us. Every moment, during all our lives, presents God to us to meet Him. How come we miss it every time and come back again to go through the same mundane worldly circle?
The entanglements of attachment that had to be loosened, we are tightening it even more with grandkids. The net which we were supposed to come out of, we are making it stronger with our own hands and celebrating while doing it - today is my grandsons birthday and so on. What is there to celebrate? What happened? We celebrate our birthdays with so much pomp and show? What do we really celebrate? What happens that day that we have to celebrate, we have to buy cake? Such a deep sleep. Keep doing the same thing that the world has taught us. Never listening to Him, never thinking deeply, what am I doing? Think about that - we are seventy years old, death is staring at us, and we are looking for the bakery shop; cake is needed, it’s a birthday.
ko kahto sabh baahar baahar ko kahto sabh mahee-a-o.
O my sister friends, tell me about my Beloved. Some people say that He dwells somewhere beyond this world and some say that He dwells in His creation. Tell me the truth.
baran na deesai chihan na lakhee-ai suhaagan saat boojhhee-a-o.
Do you see Him? I don’t see Him. O my sister friends, those who are wedded to Him, those who dwell with Him, do you see Him? Do you see His color? Is He black, white, brown?
I remember an old show in America, a TV series known as the Archie Bunker Show. There are two neighbors, one was white and one was black. Both get together and always argue. One day they were arguing; the black person was saying I bet God is black, and the white person says, I bet my life he is white.
baran na deesai chihan na lakhee-ai suhaagan saat boojhhee-a-o.
So, the question is: does He have any color? We know the answer but see how innocent the questions are. These are not as simple as they seem. They poke us to go deep about Him. Do you see His colors? Do you see His features? O my sister friends, please tell me the truth.
This is how we become - so simple, so innocent. This is not superficial talk. This is so deep because it’s coming from innocent hearts. It seems so simple but it is so deep; it comes from innocent hearts. Then Maharaj Ji answers:
ਸਰਬ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਵਾਸੀ ਲੇਪੁ ਨਹੀ ਅਲਪਹੀਅਉ ॥
sarab nivaasee ghat ghat vaasee layp nahee alaphee-a-o.
He is pervading everywhere and He is dwelling in each heart, and He remains unattached to everything unlike the mind.
naanak kahat sunhu ray logaa sant rasan ko bashee-a-o.
Nanak says, listen oh people, the Divine dwells on the tongue of the saints. Who are the saints? Those who become one with God.
Let us please learn to dwell with His utterances of truth. When we sit in groups, we should lose ourselves and go deep in understanding, realizing what Maharaj Ji says.
Dhaarnaa:
This dhaarnaa is about the thought that once before I had written a letter to you. At that time you were young on this path, and now after walking on this path, you have come to understand and experience so many things; now I am sending you another letter and the beauty of this letter is that each word of this letter carries my heart in it. You feel my heart in it. It’s a heart to heart conversation.
khat ik paa-i-aa see….tayree os umray nee…..tay aj ik….likhi-aa ee aa
khat nahee iHday vich….rachi-aa ay aapaa mayraa……jeeHnoo…..tayray naal turan daa chaa
This is not just another letter. My whole being is there in these words. My whole being is crying to you - I want to walk with you. Would you walk with me?
