Let us become totally peaceful within by withdrawing our thinking process from the consciousness and make it totally absorbed in feeling the presence of the Supreme, either at the heart or at the navel point; with most subtle consciousness.
On 24th December, 1704, thirty eight out of the forty Singhs with Guru Gobind Singh Ji were martyred at Chamkaur Sahib, and on the night on the 25th a Sikh woman took a very weak lighted lamp in her hand, recognized the Sikh bodies from their faces out of all those; many of the Mughal soldiers had died too. She collected all the lifeless bodies of the Singhs in the darkness of the night, put them on the pyre and did the cremation while reciting Japji Sahib. What was the name of this lady and what the Mughals did to her when they found out - we would revisit that some other day.
The Divine light was operating through Guru Nanak Dev Ji and every time He would change a body, He tested His Sikhs who had transformed or risen to great heights because in order to bear that Divine light within them requires a very highly evolved consciousness. Through meditation, the Sikhs had risen to great heights but to become capable of bearing that Divine light, holding it, and serving humanity, tests were done. Those consciousness’ which had become very humble with meditation and grace of the Guru; very humble and fearless - fearless from the world. The only fear they had was God’s fear. They were totally fearless from the world. They must have the divinely virtues. We have been revisiting the time of the third appearance of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, and now the time has come where that Divine light is going to transfer itself to another body. All those Sikhs who were thinking or believing that they are capable of holding the Divine light were tested; thoroughly tested.
Guru Amar Das Ji had two sons - Baba Mohan Ji and Baba Mohri Ji, and two daughters - Bibi Bhani Ji and Bibi Daani Ji. Baba Mohan Ji would remain in meditation all the time. He would lock himself inside and remain with God; very seldom he would come out. His state of consciousness was very high but he had never done any service, he had never assumed any responsibility. So, even though his consciousness was very evolved, that consciousness could not become the host of the Divine. We will pick up from here tomorrow.
Maharaj Ji says that to be in a human body, to have human consciousness; a human always has to choose one of the two - either he would become the master of the world or the world would become his or her master. Either you would become the slave of the world or the master of the world.
Don’t take me wrong but yesterday when I talked about the Archie Bunker Show; it was a joke, a comedy show where one person says God is white and the other person says God is black because I am black. It was a comedy and nobody laughed; you should have laughed. You didn’t see that it’s a comedy! You thought: no, no, we are sitting in Gurudwara Sahib, everything is so serious. This is proof that we are not present. We are in our thoughts, thinking something, not with the present - that was a comedy show. If somebody asks us: is God white, or black or yellow or pink, what would we say? He comes in all colors. He is not something small; He contains everything.
Yesterday, we were talking about cake; you are welcome to do this if it brings you happiness but by doing these things we keep becoming slaves of the world. The world has taught us that and we keep on doing it without thinking about it. It did not come from within. What are we doing? Someone says, today is my birthday and we are going to celebrate it at 6:00 p.m. I am going to take birth at 6:00 p.m. tonight. What is this? The world is our master - they are dictating you; you have to buy a cake, you have to entertain others otherwise you would be a looney. We are scared because we don’t want to be isolated. Once we start understanding that our true self is perfect in itself, is totally fulfilled, divine, then you cannot become the slave of the world.
So, Maharaj Ji says either you are going to become the slave of the world or you are going to become the master of the world. If you are your master, then it would be up to you if you would allow anybody to make you sad; why would you do that! If the world is your master then you would be in the hands of the world - sometimes you would be happy, sometimes you would be sad, sometimes you would be sorry, because you are not your own master. He says it so beautifully:
jaaN pir andar taaN Dhan baahar.
Maharaj Ji says when God reveals Himself within you and you feel Him, then the illusion is outside; you cannot become deluded that I am going to get happiness from there or satisfaction from there - that’s an illusion. He says if you are with God, then you cannot be deceived by the outside colors, by the outside world; you cannot be deceived by their falsehood.
jaaN pir baahar taaN Dhan maahar.
If the Divine is not within you; if you are not feeling Him, if you are not with Him, then the illusion is going to be your master; the world is going to be your master. You have to decide whether you want to be the master of yourself or you want the world to become your master.
maahar is expert. Maharaj Ji says if you are not within, then the outside world is going to become your master and it is expert in that. Please recognize the depth of these simple words. They contain the secret of whether we want our lives to become a celebration of being a permanent king or a misery becoming a permanent slave. The world is expert at becoming your master. They just need a chance!
bin naavai baho fayr firaahar.
If God is not living within you, you don’t feel Him, then you are going to remain in the continuous cycle of birth and death.
If we look at it - when we become our own master, recognize that there is no “me”, it’s Him, would there be anybody’s birthday? Who would celebrate whose birthday? We are something (if you would) who can never die; our consciousness cannot die. He says that without the Divine being revealed within you, one remains in countless transmigration.
satgur sang dikhaa-i-aa jaahar.
Maharaj Ji says the True Guru shows us that the Divine dwells within us. He doesn’t just talk about it, He shows us. He says come here, feel His presence here at this point, feel His presence at the forehead, feel His presence at the hirdaa, feel His presence at the navel point, feel His presence at the root point, feel His presence at the back of the head, feel His presence at the top of the head - see He is right there with you! That’s why we need the Guru because it’s the Guru who secretly, quietly, without letting us know, makes the Divine reveal Himself. We cannot! It’s the Guru who has the power; Guru is the mediator; there is no difference between God and Guru.
jan naanak sachay sach samaahar.
Maharaj Ji says the truthful ones remain merged with God. Truthful - who keeps feeling the truth.
Dhaarnaa:
khat ik paa-i-aa see….tayree os umray nee…..tay aj ik….likhi-aa ee aa
At that age of yours, I wrote you a letter, and I am writing another one to you today but this letter is carrying my very being in these words.
It matters not male or female. We are not male or female. We are something so beautiful, beyond the seeable.
barhaa chir tur li-aa…..maiN ban heeri-aa vay……hun….heer ban …udanaa yaa
O my precious one, you have been walking on this path as “you” - you say I do this, I do so many paaths, so much meditation. Now let’s make the “I” move away and let’s run to Him, fly to Him upwards by being Heer. Heer Ranjhaa is one of the most famous love stories. Ranjhaa is God and Heer is His beloved. Now please don’t walk as “you”, walk as His Heer, as His beloved. Now your walking should not be as you walking but as His beloved walking towards Him. It has been too long that this “I” has been; because of this “I” we have not been able to reach that state. Now the “I” must go! Don’t say that you want to meet Him, say that Heer wants to meet Him, His beloved wants to meet Him.
heer daa khi-aal jaaN…..boohay dayraa laa baithaa….daynaa…. maiN noo oHnay….suknay paa
As the thought of “I” is replaced by the thought of Heer, thought of His beloved; as this thought starts following you, it’s going to kill the “me” or “I” or ego. Now you must keep this thought that you are not Makhan Singh (or your name); you are His Heer. As this thought starts following you, soon there is going to be no “I”.
Dhaarnaa (end)
We are also going over the questions that the most accomplished Yogis or Siddhas of the world at the time asked Guru Nanak Dev Ji when He climbed the Himalayas to meet them and tell them that you are wasting your lives. Starting from where we left in Toronto, another question of the Siddhas was:
You are saying this consciousness is God and consciousness is doing everything; we don’t understand.
aapay surtaa aapay kartaa kaho naanak beechaaro.
Siddhas question to Guru Nanak Dev Ji is that you are saying that the holy consciousness is God Himself and it’s the consciousness that is doing everything, not our bodies. Now, we have become this thing which is no more God. How to go back now? How to recognize our true self?
ki-o tatai avigatai paavai gurmukh lagai pi-aaro.
Also, their question is: how to merge this impure consciousness with God in order to recognize our true self? We will see tomorrow what Maharaj Ji answers.
Dhaarnaa:
samaa ay jo aa-i-aa…..hai aj shaamaaN bankay……ay vaslaaN day chaavaaN…..naal bhari-aa pi-aa hai
This time who has presented itself to us as an evening time, it’s full of joy; joy of uniting with the Lord.
hunay hunay laNghi-aa…….jo gagan gulaabee….o khoon aashikee daa….dikhaaNdaa rihaa hai
kee khoon maansaaN daa…..hai vajad aashikee daa……savaal jaaNdaa jaaNdaa….oh paa-ouN-daa rihaa hai
Just before the sunset this evening, he colored the skies with the most beautiful shades of pink and red. Was that the color of ishq that he colored the skies with, before he set? While disappearing, those beautiful shades of reddish colors in the skies kept asking me: you have blood in you too. Is that the blood of an aashik (lover)? Is your blood the body of an aashik?
The nature of the aashiks is to keep roaming in the streets of the beloved, and your blood keeps roaming in your streets within - have you ever thought that maybe your blood is aashik of something? These are simple innocent questions meant to ask us gently that we should become habitual of going deep into things that we are taking for granted, Nobody knows what blood is. Doctors will tell you it’s hemoglobin. Nobody on this earth can make blood. What is blood? We always remain in our superfluous consciousness. We never go deep, we never become lost in thinking about us, about life, about this and that. In this shallow layer of consciousness, we can never know what life is; we can never know how beautiful life is.
kee khoon maansaaN daa…..hai vajad aashikee daa……savaal jaaNdaa jaaNdaa….oh paa-ouN-daa rihaa hai
Those beautiful reddish colors in the skies kept asking me before disappearing: your blood is of deep red color; do you know what blood is? Do you know what that crimson red color is? Have you ever thought about it?
aashikaaN dee kaar huNdee….galee gayrhay rakhanay……khouray oh subhaa hee….pugaa-ouN-daa pi-aa hai
Perhaps the nature of blood is the same as the nature of aashiks. Have you thought about it?
