ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
On December 26th and 27th, 1704, the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, ages 6 years and 8 years, were produced in the court of the Mughal governor of Sirhind. He makes every possible effort to change their course from this path of love, ishq with God. When they don;t budge, he ordered that both of them be bricked alive. This order was passed on December 27th and they were bricked alive on December 28th. When their grandmother, mother of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Mata Gujar Kaur Ji, heard this news, she lied down and quietly left her body. The governor would not even give the land; a small portion, six feet by five feet or so to cremate them. Those of us who are unaware, we should hear the story of how they were cremated.
When Guru Nanak Dev Ji in His second appearance blessed Baba Amar Das Ji with the throne, He also gave instructions to Baba Amar Das Ji to settle down in Goindwal Sahib and establish the place. Goindwal Sahib is on the banks of the River Beas. Maharaj Ji also asked Baba Amar Das Ji to take their family along so his two sons - Baba Mohan Ji and Baba Mohri Ji, and two daughters - Bibi Bhani Ji and Bibi Daani Ji used to live with Guru Amar Das Ji day and night. Naturally, they were all inclined towards meditation. Now the time has come where that Divine light is going to transfer itself to another body. Those who were thinking or believing that they are capable of holding the Divine light were tested. Yesterday, we talked about Baba Mohan Ji. He did not even have any desire to bear the Divine light so he did not have to be tested. Neither was he capable because he had never done any service or assumed any responsibility. Baba Mohan Ji was the eldest son of Guru Amar Das Ji.
The other aspirant for the throne who thought he was capable of holding the Divine light, his name was Baba Mohri Ji; He was Guru Amar Das Ji’s younger son. He was responsible for all the expenses at Goindwal Sahib; the buildings were coming up, every day more and more sangat was coming, more offerings were made. He would remain busy in keeping account of the offerings. Couple times, Guru Amar Das Ji asked him to not keep account because it is the house of the Lord, langar of God and it is being run by Him so we should not worry. Baba Mohri Ji would not say anything at Maharaj Ji’s face but later on he would say to others that how can you run all these services without keeping account of the money? One day, a lot of offerings were made and at that time money was only in the form of coins. There was a big pile of coins; Maharaj Ji called Baba Mohri Ji to count and it took him a long time. Maharaj Ji said look at your hands, and when Baba Mohri Ji looked, his hands had become blackish as they had come in contact with the metal coins. Maharaj Ji said this is what maa-i-aa does - it turns a person black, makes one’s consciousness impure. One should not run after maa-i-aa. Only collect the Divine in your heart and not maa-i-aa. Because his consciousness was in money, even though he would meditate, he was nowhere close to being qualified to behold Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s light in him. Tomorrow we would see who the next person is.
Please become focused at the hirdaa and feel the Divine there.
ਆਹਰ ਸਭਿ ਕਰਦਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਆਹਰੁ ਇਕੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
aahar sabh kardaa firai aahar ik na ho-ay.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਤੁ ਆਹਰਿ ਜਗੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
naanak jit aahar jag uDhrai virlaa boojhai ko-ay.
Maharaj Ji says everybody is running around day and night, making all kinds of efforts. But they are not making the very effort which would make them liberated from their minds, which would free them from the transmigration, from the cycle of birth and death. He says only the rare ones know how to make that effort which makes one free in the truest sense of the word - total freedom, totally self-sustaining, by realizing the true self.
vadee hoo vadaa apaar tayraa martabaa.
O my dear beloved Lord, you are the greatest of the great! Maharaj Ji is addressing Him, showing us how to do it, and asking us to address Him. O my beloved Lord, you are the greatest of the great and your status is infinitely glorious; your status is beyond any description.
ਰੰਗ ਪਰੰਗ ਅਨੇਕ ਨ ਜਾਪਨਿੑ ਕਰਤਬਾ ॥
rang parang anayk na jaapniH kartabaa.
Innumerable miracles of all colors and types are happening everywhere throughout Your creation; You are making them happen. Everything which He creates is a miracle! Human body is a miracle - it’s a miracle that it can fold and sit down, it’s a miracle it can lie down, it’s a miracle it can stand up, it’s a miracle it can walk, it’s a miracle it can jump, it’s a miracle it can make sound, it’s a miracle it can see, it’s a miracle, miracle, miracle! But how amazing that we never see His beauty which is all around us!
ਜੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਲਾ ॥
jeeaa a(n)dhar jeeau sabh kichh jaanalaa ||
You are the life of everybody’s life. But they don’t know and you are in no hurry to make them know. You know everybody’s insides - what they are thinking, what they are planning, what they are up to, what they are desiring, if what they are doing outside is the same as what they are thinking; You know everything!
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਵਸਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਘਰੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
sabh kichh terai vas teraa ghar bhalaa ||
Everything is under Your command and how beautiful is Your home. Where is God’s home? Everywhere - in the sound, in the sight, everywhere!
Today this beautiful lady from China visited and she said, I like the empty space. There is no empty space, it’s filled with Him.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਤੇਰੈ ਵਸਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਘਰੁ ਭਲਾ ॥
sabh kichh terai vas teraa ghar bhalaa ||
vadee hoo vadaa apaar tayraa martabaa.
Maharaj Ji has uttered four stanzas in Japji Sahib about hearing (suni-ai); that if one becomes capable of hearing, God comes in their hand.

asgaah - God.
The word suni-ai is so mysterious. What is suni-ai? What is hearing? It’s so mysterious, it’s beyond understanding. What science knows does not explain the truth about anything. If science says water is H2O, then what is hydrogen? What is oxygen? They are gasses. But what are they? What is water? Mysterious! Everything is mysterious because everything is God. Even hearing is God.

ਸਮਾ ਏ ਜੋ ਆਇਆ….ਹੈ ਅੱਜ ਸ਼ਾਮਾਂ ਬਣਕੇ….ਏ ਵੱਸਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਾਵਾਂ….. ਨਾਲ ਭਰਿਆ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ
samaa ay jo aa-i-aa…..hai aj shaamaaN bankay……ay vaslaaN day chaavaaN…..naal bhari-aa pi-aa hai
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ…ਕੀ ਹੈ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ….

I was very young and there was a Sadhu who used to live in a hut in our village. He lived in the mountains all his life but came down towards the latter part of his life to impart wisdom to the people. In those days, this question about hearing (suni-ai) came to me; it must have been from previous lives.
O my mother, what is there in the word hearing? I have been trying to understand this because it’s the hearing which puts us on this path and it is the hearing which makes us merge with God. Hearing! If we can hear the Guru then we start walking the path to God’s house, and through Celestial Music one merges with God; again Celestial Music is a sound. It’s the hearing, it’s the sound. Whosoever hears the sound starts walking on this path, and it’s the sound that makes us merge with God in the end.
ਸੁਣਿਐ ਲਫ਼ਜ਼ ਵਿੱਚ…ਕੀ ਹੈ ਨੀ ਮਾਏ….ਮੈਂ ਜਨਮਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਫੋਲਾਂ….ਝਕਾਨੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਏ

O my mother, what is there in the word hearing? I have been trying to understand through many ages, but in every lifetime I feel it dodged me, it eluded me. I have been looking into the different layers of this word; I have been watching and trying to understand the different layers of this word but in every lifetime I failed to fully grasp it. What is this?
We must sit and think deeply about these things. We cannot get anywhere with the superfluous consciousness. One has to become deep and serious like God.
ਮਤਿ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਤਨ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਿਕ ਜੇ ਇਕ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਖ ਸੁਣੀ ॥
mat vich ratan javaahar maanik jay ik gur kee sikh sunee.
He says even if someone can hear one message of mine, just one word, his or her consciousness would become so precious that it would be indescribable. It’s not a joke; He is not exaggerating. What we hear and what we understand is at the surface, very shallow; we understand very shallowly whatever He utters.
Our insides should dance. Inside is not dancing because we are not hearing. Whosoever hears even one word of His, how can their inside not dance! Then you don’t have to tell them where to stretch or pause while singing; that’s mechanical. We can’t sing because we don’t hear, and our mind has us convinced that you are hearing everything, you are so smart and intelligent.

ਕਿਉ ਤਤੈ ਅਵਿਗਤੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥

The Siddhas ask Maharaj Ji, how do you merge with God?
The answer:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੋ ॥

Maharaj Ji says you merge with the Divine through ishq. He says those who have love in them for Him, then their love would not only be for Him; love is not restricted to somebody, it’s the attachment which is restricted.
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਅਵਿਗਤਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਤਤੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਲਹੈ ॥
gur bachanee avigat samaieeaai tat nira(n)jan sahaj lahai ||
This is mind boggling! Maharaj Ji says you do meditation but if there’s no love in you then you never become peaceful. And if you are unpeaceful, the question of merging with Him does not arise. Please understand this. How deep is this statement! It’s ishq!
Please feel Him, and let us learn how to love Him. The power who we are feeling is ishq - let us learn to love Him. We think only physical bodies can be loved, and the unseeable cannot be loved. No! There can only be attachment between physical bodies. Ishq is something different. While feeling Him, let us please consciously love Him. Consciously, very lovingly saying to Him: I am so grateful, my Beloved, that you have appeared within me. You are my life, You are my breathing, You are my heart beat, You are my pulse, You are my love, You are everything. You are the reason for my existence. I am so so grateful; I fall at Your feet. Please imagine your head falling at that power who we are feeling. Imagine that the power who we are feeling are His Lotus Feet, and keep your head falling there. Imagine it please, and then it would not be a mere imagination; it would be a real happening.
When we are sad, we look for a reason for our sadness - we look back at the moments which have passed and think that I made a mistake, it happened because of this or that. When we worry about something then we look around and try to find the solution for that worry. When we are sad, we look back. When we worry, we look around. If we have faith, then the faith looks upward or inward. Then, neither we go back nor wander around; we just remain in the present and talk to Him, have faith in Him - Maharaj Ji, I am so grateful. Actually, no words would come. One day, we would become so wonderstruck at ourselves that what a stone I am that I do not melt, no matter what! One day, when this happens, then He opens His door and says: come in, now you are pure enough. The impurities are washed away with the tears. So, if we want to be happy all the time, blissful, peaceful, then the secret is to build a house in the garden of the present and live there.

If you want to become fragrant like a flower, then laugh away even with the thorns.
If we want to be fragrant, we must become like a flower. We cannot be stones and expect fragrance in us. It is our crazy self-consciousness, foolish self-consciousness that makes our life so empty. If we want to be self-conscious, then we must remain conscious that this is God who is sitting, who is listening, who is singing.
ਹੁਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਾਗ਼ ਵਿੱਚ…..ਮਹਿਲ ਉਸਾਰ ਵੇ…..

To be in the present is to be in a garden, where every moment we are taken in front of a new flower, in front of a new opportunity, a new beauty, a new possibility. Build a house in the present and stay there. To be in the present is to be in a most beautiful garden which presents new, fresh miracles every moment.
