There was a question by one of the sangat, that the other day you said that we never die; there’s no possibility of us dying. The question was: we do die, we see people dying, we see people taking birth and dying. Could you explain this?

Ji, if any question about life is deeply understood, the meaning of life changes. But it can only be understood if we sit alone every day and immerse ourselves in that thought deeper and deeper and deeper, until the picture becomes clear to us. At every step, Maharaj Ji asks us to remain with the shabad and do veechaar (ponder deeply) over His utterances. He says don’t be under the impression that you listened to what I said and now you have understood it. He says nothing was heard or understood; we will go outside and life would remain the same.

So please, at every step on this journey, Maharaj Ji stops us in every hymn. Maharaj Ji utters the gist of that hymn and then asks us to stop and go deep into what He has said. In every hymn, Maharaj Ji states the soul of that hymn in the first 2-3 lines and then says rahaa-o (stop here). Stop and go deep into what I have just uttered; don’t keep reading. In every hymn! Please, we must understand this.

Life requires very subtle consciousness to see, to understand; to somewhat understand the things happening around us, to us. And in other baanis, utterances, where there is no rahaa-o; baanis like Japji Sahib, Sukhmani Sahib, Anand Sahib - wherever the name Nanak comes, He means stop here, don’t keep reading; just digest what I have uttered about; stop here!

But I don’t have time and need to go to work. Then there’s no point in just finishing the Nitnem; you can do it later but do it meaningfully. It’s not just a parrot like repetition.

If we fully grasp what He tells us about birth and death; if we fully grasp this, then the way we look at life, the way we behave with others would change drastically because we would understand something, what is called life.

Maharaj Ji says:

din meh rain rain meh dinee-ar usan seet biDh so-ee.

He says, there’s night in the day and there’s day in the night.

He says, what is day and night? During the night, it’s dark and then what happens? He brings a lamp into the darkness - the sun, and the night turns into a day. Please understand this. See how the play is. Where there was darkness, now there is light. Where there was night, now there’s day. How? Something changed. Please understand this. He says, bring a light into the darkness, into the night, and it would become day. Now withdraw the light from the day and it would become night. He uttered this in just four words!

usan seet biDh so-ee.

usan means heat and seet means cold.

He says the same thing about heat and cold. He says if it is cold, bring a heater into it and it becomes hot. Now take the heater out and it becomes cold. Please understand. He’s talking about birth and death. If it's cold, bring a heater into it; if it's hot, then take the heat out of it, and that is called air conditioning (AC). There were no AC’s at that time, but He is telling the science behind it. He says take the heat out of the hot environment. AC throws the heat out and it becomes cold.

din meh rain rain meh dinee-ar usan seet biDh so-ee.

He’s saying day and night are not two different things. It’s a relative thing. Because in the ultimate, nothing can be described, period!

He says ultimately the story cannot be said.

Maharaj Ji says, ultimately there’s no night, there’s no day; ultimately! But there is day and night, relatively. Please understand this. Two things are happening simultaneously - one is permanent, and one is temporary.

Day and night can only be described relatively; we can only say day because it can turn into night. We can only say night because it’s a relative thing. But ultimately, there’s no day and night. We would understand this soon. Einstein introduced this word relativity; Theory of Relativity.

Science is so beautiful. Science is what God shows the man; we call that Science. Einstein says that nothing can be described; any definition of anything can only be relative. How beautiful!

Who am I? I’m the son or daughter of so and so. But if those parents are taken out of the picture, then what would we say, who am I?

Relative - he says whatever we talk is not the ultimate talk, it’s the relative talk.

jal tarang ar fayn budbudaa jal tay bhinn na ho-ee.

A wave arises in the ocean, plays with the ocean, or with itself while remaining attached to the ocean, and then merges into the ocean. Please understand this. So, the wave arose; what is that wave? The same thing as the ocean. Maharaj Ji says the wave, the bubble, the foam - they are the same as the ocean; it’s just ocean. When a wave arises, we can say it was born, and when the wave merges into the ocean, we can say it died. But did something really take birth or die? That’s what He is saying about.

We are born in space, in the universe; the universe is space. We are born in space and the whole universe is nothing but the expansion of God. And we can never go outside of the universe or outside of God; we are always within the ocean called God. Now, a wave arises within the ocean (God) and the wave has a form. Just like the wave on the ocean has a form, just like that we have a form too. But this form is not separate from the ocean. We can see that we are always in the ocean, never separated from the ocean. Wave has a form, we have a form too. When the wave merges, we merge; that thing which is play, which is called life, is nothing but God Himself, the ocean Himself, water Himself. Wave is the water itself, playing with itself! What a play, that if you are sitting at a level where you cannot see the ocean, and you can only see the waves, then you would say that waves are taking birth and they are dying. If you only see the waves arising, and merging, and disappearing, then we can say there is death and birth happening; that’s the relative statement, not the ultimate truth. That’s why Maharaj Ji says Akath Kahaanee (a story that cannot be told); He says, ultimately nothing can be talked about. If we can see the ocean too, and see the waves arising in reality on the surface, then we would clearly see that nobody is taking birth and nobody is dying.

We cannot see the ocean, we can only see the waves, that’s why we say that wave is born, that wave has died. Because we don’t see the ocean, we don’t see God around us. So, ultimately two things are happening - one is permanent existence, and one is limited existence or existence for sometime.

So, Maharaj Ji says that you can call it a wave, you can call it a bubble, you can call it foam, but in reality it’s water, it’s ocean, it’s God. So, there’s only God! That’s the ultimate truth! If we keep this in mind, then we would clearly see that our existence here is only limited, it’s transitory. Then our behavior towards others will be different. We will see that neither I am going to be here one day, nor you are going to be here one day, so what is the fight for? What are we fighting for? You are cheating me, I have 50% shares, you are not being fair to me (Baba Ji laughs). But if you see the drama in the whole picture, our behavior will be different. We would clearly see that nothing is going to go with me, nothing is with me now, or mine; it’s all Him! Why not enjoy; just watch the ocean!

nah kichh janmai nah kichh marai.

He says nothing is taking birth, nothing is dying. This verse is from Sukhmani Sahib.

aapan chalit aap hee karai.

He says, He’s just playing a game with Himself; the wave is playing with the ocean; with Himself. Wave is Himself, ocean is Himself.

Maharaj Ji says it’s a drama, and He alone is playing the drama; there’s nobody else there! (Baba Ji laughs). But the way we live our lives, we should look at that and laugh at ourselves at what we do.

Dhaarnaa:

fullaaN vaaNgooN mahikanaa jay……vich gulzaar day……

kaNdhi-aaN day naal vee tooN……has kay gulzaar day

If you want to become fragrant like the flowers, then laugh with the thorns too because flower and thorn ultimately are one. You think about this and we will talk about this tomorrow. Flower and thorn, ultimately are one.

The night arises out of the day, and the day arises out of the night.

What is a wave? We are the waves. Some big people, they become waves, and we are like bubbles or foam. Who are we? We are just ego; that I exist, I am. So, it is actually a wave to whom God has given the idea that you exist; say that you exist. You can say you are separate because God cannot be seen. So God puts that thought into the consciousness; the consciousness is God. So, in our consciousness He puts the thought that you exist. Where is God? Show me. (Baba Ji laughs). So, God puts ego in the wave, and the wave starts behaving differently. That’s what we are doing. And when He says come under his hukam, come under His command, that’s where you see that you are ishq; means, recognize that it’s just Him playing. Recognize that it’s just Him. See Him happening everywhere, then you will recognize that it’s not you, it’s Him.

din vichoN raat ugay…..raat vichoN din vay

Did the night really exist? Light exists but darkness does not exist. When light is taken away; the Divine light that is; darkness happens. There is no such thing as darkness that exists on its own; it is just the absence of light. Similarly, there is no “I”; it is the absence of the Divine, absence of true knowledge, absence of true understanding. There is no “I”. What does Baleyo Charaag mean? It means who came and told the world that you are seeing yourself as darkness; darkness is because the lamp is not lit inside you; darkness does not exist. It’s all Him, it’s all Divine light! Please listen to this again. Darkness does not exist; there is no “I”; ego is darkness.

If we keep taking the tenderness out of the flower, what would be left behind? Thorn! If we start taking the tenderness, the fragrance out of the flower, what would be left behind is thorn. If we start putting the tenderness and fragrance into the thorn, it would become a flower. Ego is the thorn. You start taking the thorn out of us and the flower would start blossoming. We are actually ishq and ego is sitting on the throne of ishq. The moment we start taking the ego down the throne, what would we find sitting on the throne? Ishq! Which is the reality.

ab ta-o jaa-ay chadhay singhaasan milay hai saringpaanee.

How beautiful! Kabir Sahib says now I have ascended on the throne, and I’m sitting on the throne; I am the flower, I’m the ishq! How beautiful! Please see this story, and how far we are from reality. We love the ego! We spend our lives enhancing the ego, by becoming more wealthy, more powerful, more strong, more influential, more this, more this, more this, more thorn, more thorn, more thorn! So just like the relationship between day and night, it’s the same between ego and ishq, and the same between flower and thorn.

haumai tay ishak daa vee……iho jihaa saak vay

We must sit and ponder over what is truth and who we are? Then enshrine the truth within you and always remember it.

When Maharaj Ji says remember God 24 hours a day, what does He mean? He means, remember that it’s not you, there’s no you, it’s God. You are not a thorn, you are a flower; and once we realize that I’m a flower, our behavior would change.

so parabh door naahee parabh tooN hai.

You are not ego, you are ishq.

By remembering God, He means remember that you are a flower, you are not a thorn; you are ishq, you are not ego. Then, right away our attitude, our behavior, our look, our way of walking, talking, everything will shift.
