Ji, please focus in between the eyebrows or at the hirdaa. Maharaj Ji says:

Dhun meh Dhi-aan Dhi-aan meh jaani-aa gurmukh akath kahaanee.

Dhi-aan means to focus the consciousness.

Maharaj Ji says that by focusing our consciousness, the Divine will be felt within and we will know that God dwells within us.

Bring your consciousness to the point in between the eyebrows or at the hirdaa. If we draw a line from the navel point to the throat, then the space at the level of the heart, behind the heart, and slightly to the left side of that line is the hirdaa.

saadhay tarai man dayhuree chalai paanee ann.

man is a measure of weight. saadhay tarai man - means three and a half man, around 50 kilos.

Maharaj Ji says that a human body weighs 50-60 kilos and it is sustained by food and water.

saadhay tarai man dayhuree chalai paanee ann.

aa-i-o bandaa dunee vich vat aasoonee baneh.

aasoonee - Maharaj Ji says the word aas (hope) with a lot of love and affection - aasoonee. Sometimes He says aasarhee. These are affectionate ways of addressing someone.

Maharaj Ji says that one comes into this world with the most cherished desire.

vat - means again.

Last time the task was not accomplished so he was sent back again.

aa-i-o bandaa dunee vich vat aasoonee baneh.

Maharaj Ji says that when somebody is sent into the world, he is made fully aware that you are going into the world to fulfill your most cherished glorious desire.

Until we merge with the Divine, our consciousness that sees, hears, thinks, ponders, plans, learns, teaches, is called the mind. This consciousness can only travel horizontally along the earth - where we live, where we own property; this worldly consciousness cannot rise above the earth. It is only concerned with its own little world - mother, father, family, property, work, friends - this consciousness remains in this tiny world. God’s creation is infinite but we have created our own little worlds within it because of which we suffer day and night. This consciousness stays along the surface of the earth and cannot rise above it.

seet-rhaa man manjhaahi - Maharaj Ji says that our minds, the worldly consciousness, can only travel horizontally, on the surface of the earth; it cannot rise upward. And God’s consciousness only flows upwards. Maharaj Ji says these two - mind’s consciousness and God’s consciousness are woven like a cloth.  We may have noticed that when world class players win big tournaments like Wimbeldon or other world competitions, they look up to the skies after winning. They don’t think about it; it just happens. It means the consciousness looked towards the Divine and thanked Him. God is not up in the skies only; God is everywhere, but just like the mind’s consciousness stays along the earth, the Divine consciousness flows upwards, so the eye looks upwards to thank the Divine.

So, the mind’s consciousness can only travel horizontally and God’s consciousness travels vertically only.

palak na theevai baahraa - God does not become separated from us even for a moment, not even for the time we take to blink our eyes.

Please sing with love and feel His presence at the forehead.

Maharaj Ji says, O my dear ones, you are sent  into this world to fulfill your most precious desire, and that desire of yours shall be fulfilled; all you have to do is keep looking at God, means keep feeling Him. Keep feeling Him within, or initially just remember that He is everywhere; it’s all Him.

What is that desire?

A bird gives birth to her little ones. She brings some seeds and feeds them. After a few days, she sits at a slightly higher spot, holds the seed in her beak, and asks the baby bird to fly and take it from her. The baby bird tries, falls down multiple times, and eventually reaches up to the mother and takes the seed from her. This way, the mother bird teaches the baby bird to fly; then she takes the baby along with her to fly for a short distance, and then they fly together all day long. Days and nights go by and this way their life passes away. Animals are like this as well. The consciousness of birds and animals cannot be changed. But human consciousness is different. The human consciousness that travels horizontally along the surface of the earth transforms and flies upwards towards the skies, becomes divine consciousness and turns out to be God in the end. Please understand this. In His entire creation, this miracle happens only with the human body, human consciousness. The rest of the creation is in His hukam - the tree has no choice to move; it stays in the same spot. Animals and birds have no choice to transform their consciousness or to speak like humans or to build permanent homes or bazaars; they don’t have the choice. Humans have a choice - either they can live their entire life with an animal and bird-like consciousness or they can transform to divine consciousness and merge with God. But this story is so deep and yet so simple that so called intelligent people do not grasp it. They spend their entire life - 70,80,90 years, but their consciousness remains along the surface of the earth and never rises upwards. What is human consciousness? Learn from each other, learn from each other how to do things - that’s all! In the very first stanza of Japji Sahib, in the beginning of Guru Granth Sahib Ji, He makes it clear:

bhukhi-aa bhukh na utree jay bannaa puree-aa bhaar.

Even if you have the entire wealth, all the gold, all the gems and diamonds in the entire world, the whole world becomes yours; you are going to remain hungry; your consciousness is going to remain along the surface of the earth. It’s your choice if you want to live like birds and animals and then He is going to send you back into the world, and the cycle will continue. If you are fortunate, you will hear that you came into this world with the most cherished desire to transform your consciousness into divine consciousness. Maharaj Ji says one in a million would hear this.

mat vich ratan javaahar maanik jay ik gur kee sikh sunee.

He says even if someone hears just one of My utterances, their life would change from human life to divinely life.

We must ponder over this. All our life we have been reading our daily prayers, we have been going to the Gurudwara Sahib every day - did our consciousness rise upwards? If it did not, and our consciousness remained the same as the worldly consciousness, then what did we gain?

We must accomplish what we came to do - the real purpose of life. All that we have been collecting will be left behind. One day the eyes will close and nothing will be ours and no one will go with us; we will have to go alone. Maharaj Ji says, all those for whom you have been running day and night and committing sins; no one is going to go with you. You came here to do something very important; do it while you still have time, before the sun sets in your life.

The whole Guru Granth Sahib Ji urges us; in one of the daily prayers He says:

jeet firai sabh days disaan ko baajat dhol mirdaNg nagaaray

sree pat sree bhagvaan bhajay bin aNt kau aNt kay Dhaam siDhaaray

There are kings who became famous in the world and in the end death consumed them; their consciousness remained along the surface of the earth. What did they gain?

Our life must change from today. If it doesnt change today then it will never change. Maharaj Ji says:

ab na bhajas bhajas kab bhaa-ee.

aavai ant na bhaji-aa jaa-ee.

He says if your consciousness does not start rising upwards today then what is going to happen tomorrow? The story is about now, about today! Tomorrow is governed by what we do today. We can see that what we do today, that is what we will do tomorrow because we are set in our habits. We must do it from this moment!

Maharaj Ji says:

hai ko-ee raam pi-aaro gaavai.

He says is there anyone; raise your hand if you want to transform your consciousness to divine consciousness; is there anyone?

sunhu ray too ka-un kahaa tay aa-i-o.

None of us know who we are. Our name, mother, father, village does not tell us anything about who I am.

Dhaarnaa:

aa baih vay sajan sohni-aa…..maiN kujh puchhan aa-ee haaN

tooN kavan days daa shahiree…jeeHdaa maanav dasday naa

I have heard that your name is maanas (human). Your other names are just there to carry out the business in the world, but the name that your creator kept for you is maanas or maanav. What is your country? Where did you come from? Where do you live now and where are you going? You are only going to stay here for a short while. Where are you headed?

ih kavan tayray choN boldaa….jay sunayN taaN day-oo daraa

We are in such a deep sleep; we live such a superficial life out of a shallow consciousness where we never sit down to ponder deeply. We get up in the morning, brush in a hurry and keep thinking about what to do during the day. Then we shower without paying much attention and keep thinking about the day while eating. We never sit down to think: what is this life all about?

I remember that when I was very young, a question used to always come up that why is this consciousness given to us; such a wise consciousness. One does not need this much wisdom to plow the fields; what is the purpose of this consciousness? Why did He give us such a wise consciousness?

We keep talking but we have no idea where the sound comes from, who gathers all the letters, where do the various letters and sounds come from. Within a second someone gathers them, turns them into sounds and brings it outside. Who does all of this? The day we wake up and hear that it’s God speaking, we will be scared! Sit by yourself, close your eyes and keep asking yourself: Who is this? Who is this? Who is this? Your inside will become so impatient and you will be so scared. You will be scared of yourself - Who is this speaking? Who is asking - who am I? The day we realize it is God speaking we will be shaken to our roots. This sound is God and how have I been using Him? I use God to abuse others, I use God to say bad words. Will He forgive me? Will He be happy with me?

ih kavan tayray choN boldaa….jay sunayN taaN day-oo daraa

Sound is God. God lends Himself to us and says you can use me as you like. You can remain along the surface of the earth or you can fly upwards. You can use this sound to abuse others or you can use it to utter words which are like nectar. It is the same sound; how you use it is up to you.

lakh sooraj fayray paa ga-ay……ko-ee daras naa saki-aa paa

Maharaj Ji says:

ka-ee janam bha-ay keet patangaa.

ka-ee janam gaj meen kurangaa.

He says in so many lifetimes we have been insects, worms, elephants, fish, deer, and so on.

Everyday the sun rises but it cannot see who we truly are; it can only see our body. Even with so much light, the sun cannot see who we are. No one can see us because we cannot be seen.

lakh sooraj fayray paa ga-ay……ko-ee daras naa saki-aa paa

nit vagday tayray saah vee…naa jaanan tayree thaah

The sun was looking at you from the outside. It could not see the real you; all it could see is that your form is human. Even the breath which is flowing into you and out of you has no idea who you are; it cannot fathom you, it cannot mark your boundaries.

tooN kavan su dayv anokharhaa….jeeHdaa bhayd naa khuldaa yaa

Who are you? How wonderfully strange and mysterious you are, that your secret cannot be found. They call you maanas (human) but that’s the name of your form, your body, but who are you? What a mystery you are! A mystery that can never be solved.

ih Dharat vee rahiNdee nachdee…..nit moDheeN tainoo chaa

Even the Earth carries you on her shoulders and keeps dancing (rotating around its axis, revolving around the sun) that such a mysterious, such a beautiful, such a glorious being is here.

No one can fathom who we are. The Creator tells us. He says:

so parabh door naahee parabh tooN hai.

We can never have any idea who we are but the Creator tells us that it’s not us, it’s Him - the Divine, the Creator himself. But just hearing this is not going to transform us. Hearing it can only set us on the journey to recognize us, that’s all.

Maharaj Ji uttered four stanzas on hearing (suni-ai) in Japji Sahib. On questions like how many earths there are and how many skies, He answers in one line - nanak aNt naa aNt. Just four words on such a big topic and four stanzas on hearing! He says no one hears My utterances. If one realizes that I cannot hear Gurbani, there is some hope; he or she will start off by asking: how do I hear? Today, we pondered over some of His utterances but won’t remember it by tomorrow morning. Why? Because we did not hear them. We think that we are hearing but nothing is being heard. We have lived our life, came to these countries, did we become peaceful? Did we fill our insides with love, with gratitude, or did we empty ourselves of love? Maa-i-aa took away all the love. Are we going to keep coming back to this and remain in this cycle of birth and death? When will we wake up? When will we learn? When will we hear? That’s why Maharaj Ji says:

Please become focused at the forehead or at the heart area.

aavhu sajnaa ha-o daykhaa darsan tayraa raam.

Notice what we do. We will try to sing beautifully but that’s not what Maharaj Ji is saying. aavhu sajnaa - He is saying, call the Divine and then wait for Him where you are focusing and He will reveal Himself there. But what do we do? We sing and move to the next line. We don’t do what He is asking us to do. He is not saying to just sing; He is saying do this! It’s funny, it’s really funny! Can we recognize that? We have spent lives but we have not understood that we have to do what He is saying. He says call the Divine, wait for Him and He will come but you just read the line and move on. You didn’t wait for Him so who is going to come? We don’t have time to wait for Him. We sit in meditation for a little while, even the consciousness is not focused and then we get up saying that I don’t feel anything. How can we feel anything? How much patience do we have for Him to come?

aavhu sajnaa…..aavhu sajnaa…..aavhu sajnaa……aavhu sajnaa

ha-o daykhaa darsan tayraa raam.

O my Beloved, I want to have your blessed sight; please reveal Yourself.

We must start doing it from today - sit in meditation, fully relaxed with no thoughts, no worries, and prepare ourselves to meet God. If our consciousness is somewhere else, He won’t come. Before sitting in meditation, we must become fully conscious and prepare ourselves that I am going to sit to meet God; to meet God, not a person but God Himself! I should know how to call Him. I should know that even if I have to spend a lifetime waiting for Him, then I must do it. I should know that if I feel Him what a life changing event that would be; it would bring a revolution in my life!

Dhaarnaa:

ay keeHdee avaaj….tay rabaab hai gaa-ouNdee…..sun jeeHnoo jogan…..bananaa haaN chaahuNdee

Who is singing? Whose voice is this? Whose words are these? Who is singing and playing the string music that hearing this has made my insides to long, to become a seeker of the truth.

yaar noo milnay…dee mastee daa ghayraa…oHday vich khudee noo….gavaunaa haaN chahuNdee

The deeper we are into Him, the more intoxicated our consciousness becomes.

ay keeHdee avaaj….tay rabaab hai gaa-ouNdee…..sun jeeHnoo jogan…..bananaa haaN chaahuNdee

Dhaarnaa (end)

We must change the direction of our lives otherwise it will destroy us by keeping our consciousness occupied with animal and bird-like tendencies.

We must laugh. God does not meet a sad consciousness. Sad consciousness cannot rise upwards. Laughter raises the consciousness upwards.
