ੴ ਸਤਿਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਆਦਿ ਸਚੁ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਸਚੁ॥ ਹੈ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹੋਸੀ ਭੀ ਸਚੁ॥
Would you please raise your hands, those of us who sat with ourselves and pondered over who we are, what's the truth?
Lot of you, lot of you, I'm so grateful!
The story is so deep. Transformation can only happen if we learn to hear His sound, make notes, do vichaar in groups, keep hearing again and again, and sit by ourselves to practice.
The only way we can wake up is, if first of all we learn how to hear. During all the time in our ordinary lives, we interact with others and during that interaction, our mind is always standing there as a sounding board. The sounding board (mind) gives us the opinion that what you have heard is either true or not, or what is the motive. The sounding board is there and that’s the only way we know, but in order to hear Him there cannot be any sounding board. If the sounding board is there, we cannot hear anything because the sounding board is blind and deaf.
ਮਾਇਆਧਾਰੀ ਅਤਿ ਅੰਨਾ ਬੋਲਾ ॥
maa-i-aaDhaaree at annaa bolaa.
Maharaj Ji says our mind is blind and deaf, and we make him the sounding board. Isn't that laughable how we live our lives? So, in order to hear there should not be any presence of the mind.
Maharaj Ji says:
ਦਿਵਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥
divas raat du-ay daa-ee daa-i-aa khaylai sagal jagat.
He says, day and night are two nurses or two nannies in whose lap the whole world is playing.
Please listen - hear His voice. What is He saying?
What is the work of the nanny? To keep the child busy or asleep - right? Maharaj Ji says when the day arrives, day is the nanny, the nurse; it's going to keep you either busy and asleep. You wouldn't know who you are, why you are here. You wouldn't even know who your parents are!
Maharaj Ji says the day comes and the nanny arrives. You're in the hands of the nanny which keeps you busy and asleep. You would never know who you are, not only that, you won’t even know who your parents are! So, whatever we look around outside, that is the nanny; that's the nurse. Does that keep us busy or not? Does that keep us asleep or not? Nobody comes to know who their parents are.
Who is our parent?
God.
And where is God?
Hidden behind the nanny.
Look at the play! Very few people rarely get to know it, the secrets, and reach the state where they see what Mahraji says: One; that it's just Him.
tan meh manoo-aa man meh saachaa.
ਸੋ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਰਾਚਾ ॥
so saachaa mil saachay raachaa.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji in His first appearance says that within this body is your mind and within your mind is you. And until now we kept thinking that I am this body and the mind. Is that right?
Maharaj Ji says that the body and your mind (ego, the thinking process) - these are the two thick layers of clothes you are wearing. They keep you warm and asleep. You would never know who you are. The whole world is stuck with their bodies.
ਕਰਮੀ ਆਵੈ ਕਪੜਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੋਖੁ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥
karmee aavai kaprhaa nadree mokh du-aar.
He says when God becomes merciful to some soul He makes that soul wear the human body and human mind and, when God becomes so graceful, He makes you liberated of your covers and you emerge under your covers as a totally amazing thing whom you never knew, whom you never imagined.
Those two layers (body and mind) were enough to keep us asleep for ages and on top of that we wear another layer of clothes, and we want to make sure that there should be another layer, lest we wake up. Think about the futility of our mind. Please look at the futility, the poverty of our mind.
So, what happens at night?
divas raat du-ay daa-ee daa-i-aa
We have been taking our covers and our clothes (mind and body) as us. At night, He takes our clothes off and we are no more. There’s no existence of ours when we are in deep sleep and this is what happens at night - the nanny removes your clothes. In other words, the nanny does not remove our clothes; the nanny removes what we have been thinking of as us, and we are no more. The very consciousness which has made us believe that I am this body and mind, that consciousness is removed, that consciousness is destroyed and there is no trace of you; what is left behind is our true self.
These two things, our body and mind, is our false identity. At night, the nanny removes our false identity and our identity is gone; we are no more. But that’s when the real you becomes uncovered and how beautifully the real you sleeps, snores - relaxed. We never know that this is my true self and how beautiful it is because we are gone, our identity is taken away, we are no more.
We are afraid - I have lots of time to do this. Let me keep thinking that I am these clothes, let me remain stressed, let me remain hungry, let me remain miserable, let me remain frightened.
If God had not made this arrangement where He takes away our false identity, removes us from this body, we would never be able to rest or go to sleep and we would have gone mad, insane! What a beautiful arrangement! It sounds like a fairy tale, doesn't it? Somebody can come and tell us there exists another world in the universe and had he told us this story, that at night in that world, people’s identity is taken away so that they can rest, we would say how beautiful, can we go there?
ਦਿਵਸੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਖੇਲੈ ਸਗਲ ਜਗਤੁ ॥
divas raat du-ay daa-ee daa-i-aa khaylai sagal jagat.
He says during the day the falsehood is shown to you; what is visible is falsehood and that is shown to you and you have created your world in that falsehood - your wife, your husband, your house, your job, your car, your bank account, your, your, your, your, your, your! Is that true or false?
ਕਬੀਰਾ ਹਮਰਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਹਮ ਕਿਸ ਹੂ ਕੇ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
kabeeraa hamraa ko nahee ham kis hoo kay naahi.
ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਚਨੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
jin ih rachan rachaa-i-aa tis hee maahi samaahi.
Kabir Sahib says, no one is mine and I cannot be anybody’s.
Please understand this: Intellectually we may understand this somewhat but that our false ego, false identity, and our false world is going to remain there in parallel. That’s what has been happening to us till today.
We may understand it Intellectually but we have no guts, no courage to admit deep within that yes it’s false. That’s why that false life, false identity, false world of ours remains there in parallel. We may sit in meditation for many hours and become very happy and tell others we’ll find some excuse to tell others I sat in meditation for two hours but our world would be as strong as yesterday so what is there to boast about? What have we done? Have been coming to the sangat for so many years, has your world changed; what about your world? My world? Yes! (Baba Ji laughs) It is laughable, we are a laughable stock. One laughs at two times - once when one recognizes the depth of his folly, depth of his silliness, and second time when he wakes up and laughs that it's all Him, it's all Him!
Maharaj Ji says:
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਸੋ ਕਹੀਅਤ ਹੈ ਸੂਰਾ ॥
jaa ka-o har rang laago is jug meh so kahee-at hai sooraa.
Maharaj Ji says he's the bravest of the brave who recognizes oneself because you have to go through the fear that I am going to lose everything, and please trust me, you would not lose anything. What you will lose is your ego, you would lose the understanding that I am this body, you would lose the understanding that all these thoughts are me, you would lose anxiety, you would lose stress, you would lose fear, you would lose all the threats. You would lose a lot of things. Please remember, on this path everything which needs to be lost is lost and everything which needs to be had is had.
gaavee-ai sunee-ai man rakhee-ai bhaa-o
dukh parhar sukh ghar lai jaa-ay
He says all your sufferings will be taken away. Yes, you would lose a lot of things; all your sufferings will be taken away, you will be poor! We are a laughable stock and it's very difficult to wake up, very difficult!
ਸਫਲਿਉ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਸੁਹਾਵੜਾ ਹਰਿ ਸਫਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ॥
safli-o birakh suhaavrhaa har safal amritaa.
He says your body is a precious tree which has the most precious, ever alive, immortal, so blissful, so satisfying fruit - that is God. You would find out that is; God is!
Right in the beginning, He says ik, there's only One; there’s only one universal truth. What He is announcing in the very first thing, when he says One, is that nobody exists, it is just Him. Think about it! He said One; it had never happened before. Just in that statement, everything is explained: that you are not; it’s just your thoughts, beliefs, in sleep; there’s no trace of you! Whom you are saying it’s you, are your clothes. Even the nanny doesn’t exist; it’s just a role in the game. He is hiding behind the nanny as well.
Let us please understand this. The entire shabad is about how to get to that fruit.
ਦਸਨਿ ਸੰਤ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤਾ ॥
dasan sant pi-aari-aa sunhu laa-ay chitaa.
Maharaj Ji says the true Guru will tell you how to remove your clothes and realize your true self but He says.
ਸੁਣਹੁ ਲਾਇ ਚਿਤਾ ॥
sunhu laa-ay chitaa.
He says make sure that what the Guru says to you, hear it with your being. Maharaj Ji says the true Guru will tell you this but make sure that you hear Him and He can only be heard with all your being, not with your clothes. Your ears are pockets in your clothes, that's all.
Then what does the Guru say?
ਜਿਸੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਾਉ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਤਾ ॥
jis likhi-aa naanak daas tis naa-o amrit satgur ditaa.
Maharaj Ji says in whosoever’s destiny it is written, the true Guru blesses them with the sacred word, wakes them up, and when they wake up, they see that this is Amrit; it’s immortal, everlasting, alive, and always in bliss!
Maharaj Ji says when you go to the Guru, the Guru will bless you with a sacred magical word; it's called Gurmantar - magical sacred word given by the Guru. Magical!
Mantar means magic. He says the true Guru will bless you with the sacred magical alive word. Magic can only happen if there's life, right? The Guru will give you that sacred magical word and that will take you beyond your covers; that will take you underneath your covers and make you recognize who you are. When we utter the word Waheguru, right away it takes us out of the hands of the nannies, whether it’s a day nanny or night nanny, and takes us right to our parents.
When we recognize our true self, then we recognize that it's all Him, the whole world is Him. Then no more it’s your little world, the whole universe is yours! Tomorrow, Maharaj Ji is going to bless the blessed souls with that sacred, magical, alive word which takes us out of the hands of both the nannies, and takes us to our source where we come from. You just go there and your ego is no more. The story comes to an end; with such a beautiful end.
We make the family our clothes. What do the clothes do? They give us comfort and warmth, right? So everything we build all our lives is making our clothes, our false identity stronger and stronger. If that’s happening then our ego is joking with us. It says, yeah let's go to the sangat. Then, when you come back you would make the clothes thicker and you won't feel any guilt; you would think I go to the sangat, I do meditation; you would remain asleep. Can you see how difficult it is to wake up? We don't have any choice. We must burn the bridges right now and wake up and recognize that this body is not me, these clothes are not me, all these thoughts are not me, my world is not me!
ਬਾਬਾ ਆਵਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਹ ਮਿਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਹ ਆਸੀਸਾ ਹੇ ॥
baabaa aavhu bhaa-eeho gal milah mil mil dayh aaseesaa hay.
ਦੇਹੁ ਸਜਣ ਅਸੀਸੜੀਆ ਜਿਉ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਲੁ ॥
dayh sajan aseesrhee-aa ji-o hovai saahib si-o mayl. ||
Oh my dear friends, please let us bless each other that may we meet our Beloved and, that’s where we would recognize our true self. How beautiful!
ਸੰਬਤਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
sambat saahaa likhi-aa mil kar paavhu tayl.
The Divine has written for me that which year, which day I'm going to behold my Beloved and the time is here!
mil kar paavhu tayl.
Before He enters, let's pour the oil at the doorstep, my Beloved has come.
sambat saahaa likhi-aa
This is the time he had written centuries ago and that moment has arrived.
Please feel His presence in between the eyebrows or at the heart; very strong presence!
ਸੰਬਤਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਤੇਲੁ ॥
sambat saahaa likhi-aa mil kar paavhu tayl.
Tomorrow, Maharaj Ji is going to bless those souls who are destined to realize that there has never been me or you or anything else, that this is not me; this is Him. He created this temple (body), He is living in this temple, He is running this temple; it's just Him. Maharaj Ji is going to bless with that magical sacred alive word that just does magic! Something which required centuries to realize, He makes it happen in moments! How blessed we are!
Please take langar while remaining in this state of our existence which is centered at this alive temple of God and do not let any thoughts of our worlds enter into it.
