A sangat asked this question:
We have been instructed not to interact with an atheist. We can understand that we don’t want to be influenced into non-belief. It doesn’t justify not interacting with a person especially in today’s society where we live in a multifaceted world and someone’s belief does not define their worth.
Dear child, it hasn’t been said that do not talk to an atheist. Maharaj says:
baad bibaad kaahoo si-o na keejai
Maharaj Ji doesn’t say do not talk to the people who don’t believe in God. He says see everyone as the temple of God, and respect them and bow before them. But He says do not engage in any arguments or debates with them. It’s very clear.
Then she says that someone’s belief does not define their worth.
Is this true ?
If a person says, I am, and God is not. We know this is ego, and we know what ego does. On the other hand, there is a person who says, God is, and I am not. I was foolish to think I am. How can these two people be the same ?
Worldly knowledge does not matter. Maharaj Ji says:
Until we dwell in the sangat, it is not possible to understand these things. The answer to these questions cannot be understood at the surface level like 2+2 = 4; these questions are about life, they are connected to God, and our consciousness needs to be at a certain height to understand these things.
Another sangat came to bless me with the dust of their feet. And she said that I can’t accept that my own son says there’s no God, and the so-called devotion is fake.
These are very precious questions.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji answered the Siddhas questions from time to time and Guru Angad Dev Ji composed them in a serial order, which is known as Japji Sahib.
Siddhas saw that Maharaj ji was very young, in his late 20’s. They saw that this young man, he’s talking so high, so let’s test him. In one of the questions to Maharaj Ji, they said that show us, prove to us that there is God. The third Pauri of Japji Sahib is the answer to this question.
Gurbani says:
keemat ka-un karay tuDh bhaavaaN daykh dikhaavai dholo
Maharaj Ji says blessed are those who see God themselves and help others see Him. This seeing does not mean seeing with these outside eyes; it means they can feel God inside. The Guru makes us feel the Divine.
When someone on the outside says show me God, they are asking that show me God with these outside eyes. The Divine belongs to the inner world. He cannot be seen; He is hidden behind everything which is visible. He is hidden in everything, and He is operating from there. He cannot be seen from outside.
If we have a headache, we know we have a headache but we cannot show it to others. It cannot be put on the table and dissected and proved that there is pain. But you know there is pain, you know there is God, you know it but you cannot prove it to anybody. You cannot prove it directly. Maharaj ji proves it indirectly. He says:
gaavai ko taan hovai kisai taan.
He says that some sing God’s glories when they see that their bodies have the power to move, run, sit, stand; when they see that their consciousness has the ability to feel, think, contemplate. They see these are divine blessings and sing His glories. Maharaj Ji is not arguing, He is not saying it directly that there is God. Indirectly He is asking the Siddhas, where did this power in your body and consciousness come from ?
gaavai ko daat jaanai neesaan.
He says that some are very grateful to God that He blessed them with a human body and a human consciousness.
He’s not telling them directly, who blessed you with the human body and human consciousness. No! He said there are some who recognize that the human body and human consciousness are gifts from the Divine. And the question is, is there a Divine? So, He’s not saying directly yes, there is a Divine; He says there are some who sing His greatness, His mercy, His grace because the Divine blessed them with human body and human consciousness.
gaavai ko daat jaanai neesaan.
Then there are some who feel His presence within, and say that I have His mark, His presence within me, that He has given me these gifts of a human body and human consciousness. How beautifully said!
And then there are some who, through meditation, feel the Divine within and they become aware that the very one who gifted me with these gifts is the one who is dwelling within.
Dhaarnaa:
Vich mufat day milee eh daat jihrhee, aa baih kay vichaaree-ay do gharhee-aaN
Let us reflect upon these gifts that we have received for a few moments.
saagar piaaraaN tay khoobsooratee day, vich taaree-aaN laa-ee-ay do gharhee-aaN
Let us swim in the ocean of love and beauty for a few moments!
Dhaarnaa (end)
God cannot be observed from the outside. He can only be felt within, and one who sees Him within starts to see Him in others as well; that it is the same One that speaks through me, that it is the same One who sees through me.
The word human is derived from heman (He Man). Sometime in the olden ages, some sage who learned the English language, said that people are heman, that it is God who has assumed the form of a human. This meaning got lost over time.
so parabh door naahee parabh tooN hai.
God reveals Himself in a loving consciousness. If one says that God doesn’t exist, then God does not do anything to prove to that person; He gives them a choice to have their beliefs. He only reveals Himself in a consciousness that is pure, filled with love and humility. It’s a journey of emotions; emotion of love, emotion of humility, emotion of gratefulness. If we have these emotions, only then we qualify to have His sight. So, if a person says out of ego that God does not exist, would God reveal Himself in that consciousness? He has nothing to prove.
Dhaarnaa:
jazbaatee darvaajaa, naa oHday dar daa nee, dil di-aaN hathaaN naal khulay
The door to the Divine’s mansion is opened with the hands of the heart, and with the power of, humility, gratitude, purity.
aashik hovay jiHrhaa, sohnay us rab daa nee, oh ikala jihaa hon lagay
As we start remaining beyond the thinking consciousness and into the feeling consciousness, then we would feel that we want to remain alone. Only those who are His lovers, they start feeling Him. And as they live more and more with Him, their desire to remain alone with God increases.
Maharaj Ji says:
kirpaa niDh kirpaal Dhi-aava-o
Ji, we should tell children that Gurbaanee is felt and not understood by the mind. This understanding, these precious gems are only received in the sangat. Anyone who doesn’t, who is not blessed to come in the holy congregation, that poor soul can never even know that Gurbaanee, these love songs cannot be understood with mind, no matter how intelligent you are. It’s not the children's fault, some of it is their karmaa, and we could not explain it to them either because we never understood ourselves that it is about feeling. We should tell our children that Gurbaanee is understood by the inside, not by the mind; by the heart and not by the head.
kirpaa niDh kirpaal Dhi-aava-o
Maharaj Ji says that in order to feel the ocean of mercy, I focus within, in the street of the present. Gurbaanee talks about dhi-aan (focusing attention), love, creating a relationship with God, an aashiqana (loving) relationship. It is all related to the heart; nothing is related to the mind.
All Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj talks about, He says create a relationship with God, a loving relationship with God. And that can only be done through the hirdaa (heart), through feeling, not through thinking.
So, when someone asks about Gurbani, we should not give answers because it cannot be understood by the mind. We should only ask them to learn how to focus (dhi-aan), then whatever answer emerges within them is the answer.
kirpaa niDh kirpaal Dhi-aava-o
I become focused within to have sight of my Beloved, the beautiful Lord, who is an ocean, a treasure of love, a treasure of mercy, and who is all merciful.
saaDhsang taa baithan paava-o.
He says I sit in the sadhsangat and focus within, and that makes my consciousness “sit”. It means that my consciousness that was running around gets settled when I come to the sangat and focus within. Just sitting of the physical body in the sangat is not sufficient; sitting with the consciousness, focusing within, that is what matters.
Let us please take maximum advantage of this time. Please sit with each other, new sangat please discuss your doubts with the older sangat.

This dhaarnaa is about the sangat time that we lost because of COVID over the last three years.
Dhaarnaa:

Without the holy congregation, life to me seemed like a sinful life

My desire, my deep longing, yearning for the holy congregation, for the Divine, for the self, all that longing got frozen without the holy congregation.

My inside cried for the holy congregation; cried so much that she could no longer cry anymore; she became so exhausted.

And the journey of life became heavy, it felt like a punishment.
